In this compilation of videos, I show you how I am starting this painting on a thick maplewood board made for painters.
I first transferred the shape designed to the primed board with charcoal. Then I used a burnt umber acrylic paint to lay in some of the darkest shapes.
Now, in this video, I am using Rembrandt brand's Van Dyke Brown oil color to go over the acrylic and create a lighter-than-the-finished-art underpainting. I want it to be lighter than my finished painting because adding color, whether glazing a transparent wash or adding an opaque color will usually make for a darker painting. Also, as the oil paint becomes transparent with age (usually MANY years), I do not want the painting to go dark because of a dark underpainting.
I slowly add the first layer of monochromatic color, knowing that there will be more layers as I develop and refine the painting.
I want to learn something new with every artwork, 2-d or 3-d that I create. It it what keeps blood pumping through my veins and the demons at bay.
