In this Episode we explore the HVLP and LVLP world by putting to the test both of these guns that will operate at a much lower pressure. The results is less overspray and much more paint savings! We also confirm that LVLP are much better choices for DIYers using smaller compressors!

If you’re looking to purchase one of these guns you’ll have to use the “Contact Tab” located in the links in the description. Once contacted they can process an order. As of now, they are not listed on amazon or eBay. At least the real version.

Do you think I could get with small jobs like the you're working on with a Dewalt 27 gal 200 psi compressor with these specs? 5.1 SCFM at 90 PSI provides faster recovery times resulting in increased project efficiency 6.8 SCFM at 40 PSI provides the ability to operate a HVLP spray gun

Hey Brian, ir would be great if you attempt to paint several pieces with an actual Small Compressor, 20-30 gallons and do another review with this same guns, but it would be more realistic. Maybe you can borrow a small compressor and throw it in to the booth. Saludos desde Honduras

If you're shopping for a budget compressor, stay away from the dual stage high pressure versions (175psi+). They almost always have a lower cfm rating than single stage compressors sub 150psi versions. Shop for cfm, that's what the paint gun is gonna need. And if you're on the edge with your current compressor, you can connect another tank (if it's before any regulator so it shares the pressure relief valve).

These types of vids are so helpful. I hear so many people saying things like "Just go buy the correct tool for the job." I agree with that in most situations, but an 80 gallon 10 hp 30 cfm compressor is north of 3 grand. Most of us DIY'ers aren't gonna drop that much on a compressor and don't have the room for it in our garages when we only need it once every five years for doing a touch up or a body panel here or there.

The Auarita 898-2 LVLP gun literature lists its air consumption as 9-11 cfm, and the Italco Gloss X1 HVLP gun is shown as requiring 14-16 cfm. Neither of those guns are remotely close to being within the cfm output of a “regular” air compressor that operates on a 120 standard plug as you mention in the video. I thought you were going to be telling us about and demonstrating guns that would work well with a lower cfm compressor (5-7 cfm max) like those most folks have at home. Do you recommend any spray guns that actually do fit within the 5-7 cfm limitations of smaller compressors? Thanks

Future video idea: I'd like to see a video comparing all the different air caps for a given gun. For example, the GTI Pro Lite has the TE10, T110, TE20, HV25, HV30, etc. It's daunting for someone to have to pick just one (since they're over $150/pop), let alone a newb like me.

Great Video! Per the manufacturers website the Auralita 898-2 LVLP gun needs 9-11 CFM! most 30 gallon compressors don’t provide more than 5.3-6.2 CFM at 40PSI. And they don’t rate their compressors CFM Output at 30 PSI or less. Case in point I just purchased a DeWalt 30 gallon compressor it only rates its CFM at 90 PSI at 5.3 CFM. There’s 60 gallon is rated at over 11.2 CFM at 90 PSI. It weighs 208lbs and needs 240 volts 30 AMP Breaker. This means that you’ll have to either have a 240V circuit ran from your electrical panel or have the space available meaning an empty slot to install a new 30Amp breaker by a licensed electrician.

I've been told that you don't need a blending additiv with modern paint, because the metallic will not silver out. I learned car painting in germany and worked till 1992, I got sick. I developed an allergy to isocyanates and parts of the thinner. Today isocyanates are no more in the paint. At that time we needed ablending additiv and made it from ready mixed Clearcoat with thinner from the Basiccoat and very thin. At the time it functioned with the old material.

Painting is fun with good equipment, but when you have painted for couple of years you get the painters curse. Every car you see and want to buy, you see every little flaw and repainted panel like it was on different color. Your friend buys a brand new car and proudly showing it to you, and all you can see is the dealership painters respray on a panel that was probably fixed after a scratch or something else during storage.

vktren My boy’s mom has a 2005 BMW 545i that needs to be repainted. Whoever she bought it from painted half the car in Jet Black which has no metallic and it sticks out like a sore thumb. The car is supposed to be Black Sapphire Metallic and they used a different black for some reason. I’ve only done small projects, nothing bigger than hood but am fairly confident that I can do a decent job. I just don’t have a big enough compressor. If it wasn’t a metallic black I wouldn’t be so worried about doing it in sections, but breaking it up into small individual sections will cause to many inconsistencies in the way the metallic lays down. I thought if I got a good black base down then I could lay down several light coats of the metallic and try to cover the entire car fast enough to make the paint look consistent from front to back and top to bottom. I only have a 8 gallon compressor and can only cover about the size of a hood maybe before the compressor has to refill. I have been wanting to get at a 30 gallon unit anyway so I may just tell her to wait until I get a bigger compressor and then try to tackle it. It’s only paint and can always be redone if it looks like crap. Only bad thing is that the BMW Black Sapphire Metallic isn’t cheap. The other option is that I can do all the bodywork and spray a regular black base and then take it to Maaco and have them lay down the metallic black and the clear coat. I’ve seen a couple cars done that way and they turned out good as long as the prep work was good.

Do you think you can do a video in the future about what options a small shop or DIY might have for mixing paint at home? Can we just buy a subset of the toners for mixing our most commonly used colors? For a full on body shop, being able to mix any color is needed but I deal mostly with European black cars (metallic and non metallic) for example, and on occasion might need to mix a different color, so buying an entire system that goes bad isn't financially feasible. What options do we have? Thank you!

Great vid. VIDEO IDEA---how to blend a not perfect paint match! A lot of DIY painters don't have access to your awesome paint system, if we purchase base coat and it's not perfect, how to blend it in. Thanks!

I just got it ordered today. I have a smaller compressor and my iwatas and devilbiss use to much air. I ordered it because of refinish networks review on it

So could we use the LVLP for say a single stage white direct gloss ?

So in blending base coat we don't need to make it glossy right?? The distance of the gun ing the pannel is not that close right?

This was suppose to be about HVLP vs LVLP. You didn't say which you were using while painting. I could not see the performance of the guns without know which you were using.

I rather use one for all coats I saw video saying HTE is better but my paint gun used was HVLP the one from Harbor Freight that is 29.99. It is a purple color. But rather get the Black Widow in future if I get another paint gun.

Excellent Job !! The question is, if you were using a 30-gallon air compressor on that specific job, might the results will be the same with an experienced painter like you or a different result with a beginner
