Yeah I totally get everyone's comments about the 'Gong Master'. Sven definitely knows how to play a Gong, but actually the 'Master' part in the title is referring to the fact that he is the master craftsman overseeing and tuning these Gongs for Paiste. In 2016 Sven gave me a demo of the 80" Symphonic Gong. It built up to a huge roar with just a few small taps as you can see on the vid, the recording I made on my phone cant really do justice to the sound live. Yeah I know its tempting to want to see this thing hit hard and that surely would be satisfying, but actually youll get a much louder sound if you build up the vibrations slowly and will avoid putting it out of tune.

His early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Gong master has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Gorgeous! I had no idea that the sounds performed in this video, which I here in ambient film scores often, originated with this epic acoustic instrument. I used to play the gong from time to time some years ago. There's nothing like it. Theres like this supernatural power that comes from it. Every other percussion instrument you hit sounds just as you hit. The gong has this little silence where it kinda "charges up" the vibration to sound like this, Its hard to do a good job at explaining how magic this little detail was

When I was in college - (late 80's) - I was a percussionist in the college symphony, and we used to perform a lot of Stravinsky, and the like... Well, this one Stravinsky piece we were performing (Don't recall the title - but it had a LOT of percussion - including Gongs And Thunder sheets!) - required 8 percussionists, yet there were only 4 of us in the percussion section,... so we had to double up, or even more at times... and I had the bulk of 5 - FFFFF (Very Loud - Not exaggerating - it was marked with 5 - F's!!!)... ...Gong "Solos" throughout the piece. I had to literally "warm up" the gong (about 40" or 50" I think), and time the actual strike/hit - which was cued by the conductor and had to be a single loud impact, with no delay when it was cued!... So - I had to warm this puppy up to the point of explosion/climax, and hold it there until I was cued - which had to be soft enough so the audience doesn't hear it, yet vibrating enough to instantly "Go" when struck... It was Not Easy!... It Was Fun However (Plus we rehearsed the shit out of it - so it was ok by showtime..... That's my "Gong" Story...

The gong is such a crazy but instrument; played by a master it borders on creepy/surreal. Most people think of a gong as something you take a big swing at with a big mallet, but it's the softest touches, brushes, subtleties, and vibrations that bring it to life!
