I'm not sure if it's been formalised as a mathematical theorem yet, but it seems to me that one's enjoyment when playing drums is inversely proportional to the self-awareness of the silly faces pulled during said performance!

Had to stop at 1:05 i just cannot bear this style of drumming. Where it's the exact opposite of playing to the music. Him and Aaron Spears are unlistenable to me. They'll play a groove for literally four bars then go ITS ALL ABOUT ME and solo for the rest of the track. Not for me.
@daniel.lopresti2 жыл бұрын
Though I would generally agree (also had enough of the over-the-top "gospel chop" fills (and fill-based drumming in general)), I didn't find it so objectionable here, plus I find his super-tight grooves quite fun :) But that's also kind of the point of these videos, and totally makes sense in the context. On the other hand, that's why I can't stand most instrumental albums written by drummers. There are small handful who do a great job of putting the music first (Jost Nickel comes to mind).
@DavidOakesMusic2 жыл бұрын
@@daniel.lopresti I watched an Aaron Spears video on Drumeo and it actually made me mad how much he was going apesh*t over a simple funk tracks. And it wasn't just one bar here and there it was almost the entire song.
@daniel.lopresti2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidOakesMusic Yeah I also find that sort of thing pretty much "unlistenable" as you say, and don't find much musical value in it. I don't mind long fills but really love the kind of fill that has a "macro" level rhythm, eg. one bar of 16th note triplets, but grouped into 3-3-2 where when played fast enough you can make out the rhythm .. hard to explain! But the main difference being you can hear a rhythm as opposed to random thrashing ;)
@daniel.lopresti2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidOakesMusic and btw same thing with this recent trend of wanting to play in ridiculous time signatures.. if you have to pull out your calculator to be able to figure it out, it's likely not going to be enjoyable to listen to!

I never liked that kit either, Paiste needs to retire that thing. Looks cool, sounds awful. Amazing drumming though.
