Excellent lecture again. I am 65 years old and living in Canada for the last 28 years. I was just like you in my university days back in the late seventies and early eighties. Became a Petroleum Geologist and have a successful career, although spent 90% of my time reading books of social sciences, history, philosophy etc. I agree with you that our education system is flawed and creates only irrational minds.

Excellent podcast. I'm from India and I am a victim of Pakistani sponsored terror. Needless to say, I have a view that all of Pakistan is a mindless religion driven basket case that needs to be dealt with with an iron fist to keep ourselves safe. But listening to a few Pakistani thought leaders like Muzammil still generates hope. I pray that people like him, who have a mind to challenge the constructed narrative, become more than just a miniscule microscopic minority in Pakistan. Probably only then will we be able to move to a more normal relationship between our countries.

Being a teenager then, I used to watch these debate shows and it made me rethink about many dogmatic beliefs I had. Even though I didn't agree to the stance of one side or the other, it was interesting to listen to the opposing arguments. When all such shows/channels disappeared, it made me realize the importance of civil discourse in Pakistan. It has become so suffocating to have an opposing view and not being able to express it. One of the sad things is that more indians will listen to this intellectual talk than pakistanis , shows that even in dislike of Pakistan in general in india doesnt stop us from appreciating intellectual out front of Pakistan. I feel like now he has equal if not more listener in india than pakistan even though he is against Modi hindu nationalism and treatment of minorities in india. Pakistani needs to develop a thick skin and listen to this guy

Muzammil, You were correct; it was indeed Beethoven and not Mozart, as your audience mistakenly stated. Beethoven first noticed difficulties with his hearing around 1798, when he was approximately 28 years old. By the time he reached 44 or 45, he had become completely deaf.

@48:00 : It was correct that it was Beethoven. He lost his hearing later on in life, when he was composing one of his greatest works, the Ninth Symphony. He used to immerse his head in water regularly to help with migraines or headaches, and that accelerated his hearing loss. It is said that when the Ninth Symphony debuted, he was also conducting the orchestra himself, but he had assistance from others. The musicians all still played it to perfection.
