IMHO, Pale Rider and The Outlaw Josey Wales are two Clint's most enjoyable movies. Clint is the avenging angel. No one does it better! I love how, when the thugs uselessly empty their guns in the general store, Clint waits for them to finish reloading before plugging them all with one shot each. Classic.

It was like the PR knew that Richard Kiel's character could be saved by a painful lesson and a little kindness. The shootout at the end is so well done. You might be a gun fighting bad ass, but you ain't gonna out shoot a divinely inspired avenging angel... They just dont make westerns like PR any more... Note how Clint Eastwood's character uses a Remington New Army .36 caliber revolver with the then new conversion to cartridges, so that he could slide in pre-loaded cylinders just like the speed loaders of today. Sweet!

Remington New Model Army's were .44 (actually .45) caliber, not .36, your thinking of the Colt 1851 Navy. The Preacher would've been firing .45 Colt cartridges, not .38 Long Colt.

The cap and ball revolvers were still in use well into the 1880's, as the last manufacturer of revolver combustible cartridges did not go out of business until 1888! Colt Single Actions were practically impossible for the general public to get until around 1877 or so as most of the first 3 years of production were sent to U.S. Ordnance. Lots of cap and ball were converted to cartridge or just left as cap and ball. The U.S. Government was gradually selling off all the cap and ball revolvers still retained in inventory, so it was possible to buy a decent condition cap and ball revolver for around a quarter of the cost of a new cartridge gun well into the last part of the 19th Century.

Interesting that you would focus on the Marshal dying like he and his men killed the prospector in the film, however if I remember correctly there was a scene where the Clint had his shirt off, and I think it was the mom that noted a number of bullet scars on Clints back, which would likely match those found on the prospector.
