I really love this way of making videos about geology. Among other things, it helps me remembering how important it is to be on the field.

4:15 regarding rock color. How do geologist determine if the coloring and stratification is the product of initial formation - or the product of water and metals/minerals leaching out of parent rocks - and into lower stratigraphy layers?

Is it a colonial thing? Pronouncing "Epoch" (Ee-pok) as "Epic" (Epp-ik). Here in the UK you have epic poems, epic films... It means huge, sweeping, majestic. It's a different word to "Epoch". Epoch means a period of time, an era. So when you say "The Palaeocene Epic." it sounds to me like you're using the wrong word. It should be 'The Palaeocene Epoch." Is it mispronunciation? Using the wrong word? I'm puzzled as you should be surrounded by fellow scientists using "Epoch". What does everyone think? Is it common in the US to use "Epic" instead of "Epoch"?

My guess is that in american english the "o" in "epoch" is sometimes so short it becomes a schwa. Since the uninarticulate vowel is sometimes heard as a short "i" in english, it sounds like "epic".I still find this surprising because I thought americans said epoch more like /epahk/.

Both pronunciations are correct, but in America, we pronounce it with a short "Eh" sound, rather then a long "EE" sound: listen here to the Word of the Day featuring Epoch dfkfj8j276wwv.cloudfront.net/episodes/8ae71e68-a23f-478c-a77c-fbcddd1452e4/8543e1b50ae9e1bb7b07f187ec3bf4f8313626d7acf6498f405732c7aa2b08dcf620b82c12c9886e53c188e0ee60e2dc8b383d76dc1386f8c81f99543ccf70ec/wd20090113.mp3

Napishtim Maybe, could be an accent thing. It's the one word that stood out to me. As a population we're fed so much media from the US, films and TV ect, you'd think we'd have no trouble with American English. We need a vox pop in Manhattan or somewhere asking a large sample of people to say "Epoch" for us. ☺️

Benjamin Burger Hi Ben ☺️ How's stuff? You need a troup of undergrads to help find your fossils in that mudstone. Do you have fieldwork in your syllabus? Would be much easier, many hands etc. 😉 As to the epoch thing, it's the second syllable that sounds like an "i", not an "o". Epoch should rhyme with "Dock", not "Pick". The long or short "E" at the beginning does change between accents but doesn't change the meaning of the word. The second syllable change to "I" does change the meaning. I've got to say though, I love your videos. The style of presentation, subject matter and a huge dollop of geology added to your obvious happy fascination with the deep time stories waiting for you in the rock makes great viewing. I learn things from you that makes me hit Google and Wikipedia to follow up the trail into new bits of geology and paleontology. Great stuff! ,🤔☺️

Thanks! I take students on class field trips to more fossilferious rock layers that are not so remote, and were you find more plentiful fossils. No worries. There is a popular beer here in Utah called Epic with a i, pronounced Eh-Pick.
