I looked at it before. I went went the uco flatpack grill and it is my go to now. It's half the price, and does a GREAT job cooking or serving as a fire pit. Thanks for the review! Stay safe! Hitting the Azalea trail this weekend!

Likewise, the UCO is surprisingly sturdy for a pack grill.

Thanks Dr. Ernie for another informative video review; I think this would be good for a canoe or ATV camping trip. I don't think I would carry it on my back any too far.

Thanks for the vid. I went for a foldable firepit from SnowPeak. Very happy with it!

Thanks, I love my Picogrill 398 or the 760 which is huge, the numbers are how much they weigh in grams, much cheaper, better capacity, as said before super light weight, take space comparable to a paper folder but very well built (from Switzerland). I have the UCO as well and hands down Picogrill is way better and lighter. BBQ, holds pots and pans or fire pit all in one. I like that you give us many reviews of various products, everyone is different and your reviews are helpful in making up our minds.👍🏻 . Maybe you’d like to review Picogrill as well.

I agree with you. The PicoGrill is a great design in any of its sizes. I’d been looking at the smaller ones for backpacking.

Thanks Dr. Stove for another great review. You may want to try using some of the alcohol based fire gel to get your coals going if you don’t have a charcoal chimney handy. The gel also works great on wood pellets in my firebox nano. Ymmv.

I will stay with my Fox Outfitters medium folding grill. Only $40.95. I've been using it for a long time. Works very well. Practical and economical. Thanks for the information on the Camp Trio. Just not for me.

I got this grill when they first came out when they were a lot cheaper in price. I’ve used mine several times and I really like it. The bar that is on the grill grate is supposed to go in the middle of the grates versus the side. This gives you more stability all around. The only issue I’ve had with mine is the frame no longer stands up on its own. I love the compactness of the grill but I wish the carry bag was about an inch longer as it would make putting the grill back in it easier. Other than that I still like and use this grill.

This is one of my favorite camping gear pieces! It’s seems flimsy but it is really sturdy, you can put an iron skillet on it and cook with it just fine!

I have one and so like it. But too heavy for backpacking. I used it hot tenting last year.

A good technic to clean steel from burned residue from grilling is to pack it in newspaper and soak it in water for several hours (like over night).

Great vid. I have the grill by it self for hiking and kayaking. Love it! Used many times. Never had a reason for the fire box yet. Not saying it's a bad idea. Definitely doesn't take up much space. Just not necessary. Worth the money.

As far as durability, I've used a cast iron skillet on it a few times about the size of the grill and no failures.

Great review Ernie, been looking at this one for awhile now too. Have you thought about reviewing the picogril stoves and the Snow Peak Takibi large fitepit pack and carry kit? Would love to see what you think about these with the pros and cons and how they stack up to others on the market... Cheers 🍻👍

Seems promising for car camping. If I fell in love with it, it could become a luxury item in my pack; but then I'd have to give up my chair or something. Looks like it would get too hot to use on a picnic table. Perhaps they should offer a Silicon pad to go under the stove to prevent burning the grass under the stove. These "Silpat" baking mats are available in the cooking section of your local big box store BTW.

It's funny I have one of these recommendations keeps popping up for me. On KZbin and FB, it's the breeo fire pit. Has nice stainless grills but and looks like it would be a heirloom. Looking like around 1500 bucks though. Lol. For this purpose I think I'd just stick with the expedition research grill grates. TC and ATB, Cris.

A single piece of aluminium foil underneath would provide enough of a radiant barrier to prevent damage to the grass.
@briankohler3413 жыл бұрын
It's a neat little product; just not for me. I'd rather have a 21 inch weber kettle style grill. It won't fold up like this kit, but it provides more versatility for your money. BTW - A charcoal chimney would do a far better job of lighting your charcoal. Loved the video, Ernie, just offering my 2 cents.

Hi Mate, Obviously the grill part won't take the weight of a cast iron pot. But do you think you would get away with putting a full cast iron pot straight on the coals or do you think it would be to much weight? Cheers Joe

I've used a cast iron skillet almost as big as the grill several times. Never a problem and sturdy. Not sure about something like a Dutch oven though.

Out of curiosity, why is being made of 304 stainless such a talking point? Do you have a backgrounder on the different types of steel being used in the various stoves that you've tested?

The grill and the fire pit was great but their fire steel is a dud. The striker is not sharp and can't strike at all, and the steel itself is a harder kind and you need full length on a sharp striker to get any decent spark...Maybe mines a lemon but I felt like the Light My Fire is worth its weight

You just made a video for other men where you grilled. Please assume that I have picked apart every single movement, thought, and preperation ( or lack of) that you made. And critiqued it mercilessly. I enjoy your videos. I even found myself timing to see how long it took a new stove to boil water. The only timing standard I'd ever used before was annoying or not.

Not horrible but a little pricey for what it is. Very portable, but not built for long term use. It would be great for an emergency kit but for the price... Not on my wish list. 😎
