Ikr, most of the barebones basics of what are and are not dinosaurs has been well covered in the PBS cartoon Dinosaur Train 🚂 🦖🦕🚂🦕🦖😆 (which I watched with my children for years and found to be quite endearing) that happens to have a very catchy song about what is and is NOT a dinosaur during the age of the dinosaurs....

On dinosaur reproduction, I've had a theory that some of the bigger spices would use a strategy where they lay a lot of eggs and juveniles would have high mortality rates. Brontosaurus type dinosaurs, for example. Like, relatively few individuals ever made it to fully grown adulthood, but those that did would lay a lot of eggs. That would help explain why some of the non-avian dinosaurs went extinct but some of the avian ones did not (since their strategy was to invest a lot of energy into fewer offspring).

Reproduction often lags behind in evolution. Hyraxes gestate for nearly as long as elephants. Kiwis lay eggs similar in size to other ratites. Humpback and Gray whales migrate to the tropics to give birth, even though Narwhals, Belugas, and Bowheads all give birth in polar waters.

Troodon males mighta incubated the eggs like ostriches do. That way multiple females could leave eggs in one nest. Or they could have waited until they'd laid several batches of eggs to set and incubate the eggs. Most birds wait until they've laid a number of eggs over several days before they set and start incubating the eggs. Eggs kept around 55°F can keep for a couple weeks or so and don't begin to develop until brought up to incubation temp (set.) It's only necessary to keep them consistently warm once the eggs are set and an embryo begins to develop.

The fact Troodon came to this conclusion shows they are deserving of their title as the smartest dinosaur.

The Troodon nesting behaviour highlights something we see all the time, but somehow, we either ignore or forget, and that is an organism's behaviour and physiology evolve at different rates. Few people would think of a small group of female dinosaurs sharing the same nest after all. But I wonder- did male Troodonts incubate the eggs and raise the young like ostriches and emus do today?
