Some of these little bodies were dead. Others were barely alive all covered in debris. As a parent I feel empty and just pray.

Thanks, great discussion. I’m from SE Asia (not a Muslim). We are always thinking of the Palestinians. First, I really appreciate Albanese for linking genocide with settler colonialism. Second, the genocide in Gaza has exposed the hypocrisy of the West, doing the rest of the world a favour. So in that sense, we owe the long-suffering Palestinians a favour, their suffering has dealt a deep blow to the West’s unjustified claim to the moral high ground, and I hope opened the eyes of our elites who (myself included) admired the West. Western “superiority” ultimately comes from their exploitation of the rest of the world, not because they have some superior political system. It turns out the emperor has no clothes after all.

It is both war AND genocide. War isn't defined by whether the sides are equal. And genocide historically has never existed outside the context of war. Genocide and war are not therefore mutually exclusive but rather inclusive. Certainly many wars include civilian deaths but don't include genocide (e.g. the Russia - Ukraine conflict includes war crimes on both sides, but neither side has devolved to the point of genocide). For this one, Israel's main focus IS genocide and most of its munitions are going toward killing civilians, but Israel is still doing some attacks on Palestinian resistance forces (as well as Hezbollah in Lebanon), while Hamas and the other resistance factions are likewise definitely attacking IDF units. Considering the lack of an air force, anti-air weapons, and the limited amount of weapons they can make or re-purpose from Israeli leftovers: captured and unexploded bombs, the resistance forces have been remarkably effective (just watch the videos). However, there is no way the resistance can militarily defeat the IDF, but by not losing (which they haven't), the combined resistance forces (Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, etc.) coupled with Israel's owned internal schisms may yet lead to a defeat and even break up of Israel. Unfortunately it may take years and the death toll will be horrendous and a crime against humanity. Yet, I say this as a measure of hope as the only way the genocide will stop is by the resistance, because it's clear international law and the United Nations are powerless, or worse, to stop it. The US government is bent on assisting the genocide as are most of the European governments and have no intention of responding to their own citizens lack of support for these killing fields. So the only hope is actually defeating the axis of genocide.

@ JuliusGalacki There are several occurences of genocide outside the context of war (not to say, far too many genocides). Some very well known examples are Rwanda 1994 and the Jewish holocaust of the the last century (which began years before the outbreak of WWII). Maybe it depends how much you are asking of the phrase "in the context of war", or perhaps it is down to a too narrow definition of genocide, maybe both. I also think a strong case can be made to say that what is happening in Gaza is not a war (but I think we are passed semantics by now) and I don't see much 'hope' in your conclusion, but I suppose it's just your opinion.

Thank you Ahmed, Francesca and Eyal for this broadcast. Independent journalists and peaceful activists here in the UK are being rounded up under the Terrorism act and accused of supporting or encouraging support for proscribed organisations. It's as if we have tilted over from just what has always been an authoritarian culture of rule to the police-state version that we'd usually condemn others like East Germany, China, North Korea and Russia of. But as the old saying goes 'every lie is a confession' . As a 'native' of N Ireland ( in truth, an ancestor of the original colonialist settlers) and a supposed 'Unionist' born into the protestant community and served 13 years in the Royal Navy including a campaign medal for the 1982 Falklands War in the South Atlantic, I totally resonate with the way other native and indigenous people's across the world can understand and associate what is going on in Gaza/Palestine with what had happened in their own country's history. The playbook and the mentalities are the same. My best wishes to the three of you and may your strength and courage continue to inspire and empower others to follow your lead.
