Palestinians are apparently paying almost $2 million every day to flee the Gaza strip according to a report by the Middle East Eye. They are paying this money to an Egyptian firm that is ferrying them from Rafah to Egypt. Egypt has denied all reports of profiting off the misery of Gazans but this report has raised questions about a parallel war economy in Gaza. Black markets are selling smuggled aid are growing in Gaza as people become increasingly desperate for food and everyday products. While none of the aid was originally intended for sale, some Gazans are now forced to pay exorbitant prices to obtain basic supplies stolen from aid convoys.
