I have this book from 1986! First edition. I loved it then, and I love it now. I guess I could call myself a colorist. I have watercolors and any manner of art supplies. I started out around 1980 with calligraphy classes. That opened the door for me for everything else. I was 34 at the time. I'm 84 now and still love learning. I also play in a concert band. My motto, Keep Going. It's a book by Austin Kleon. Best.

Super cool! I used to live in Minneapolis and Wet Paint was my art supply store. Love it, hope you have fun there! That folio palette is gorgeous, but it'd be wasted on a beginner like myself. I can heartily agree with your endorsement of the James Gurney Color and Light book. It's chock full of information, so dense, and one I have learned so much from. Anyways, have fun on your vacation and we'll all just have to be patient until you get back. Albert says "Hey" to Reese!
@mindofwatercolor3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks buddy! I do seem to remember you mentioned living in that area for a bit. I've never been, so will be fun to meet the Wet Paint gang up there. Beginner? Hah! hardly. Yes, that book is a must for every art library I think. I may have to set Reese up with an email account so he can trade war stories with Albert. Then again, Reese is afraid of everything, technology included.

Thanks for a look at those art tool kit palettes. Those are cool and I can't wait to pick up a few. I am really a beginner, but I bought that book, Making Color Sing, a few weeks ago and I am loving it, even though it is a bit above my head right now. I still think it is helping me with how I mix and put color down on the paper now. I will look into getting that other book, too. Have a great vacation!

I hope you enjoy your vacation Steve! Be sure to stay safe. Edit: Also my palette is magnetic too. I bought magnetic strips and empty full pans. Just fill them up with paints into a metal box lol. It can fit 20 colors even in a small 'size' with a top that i use as a mixing area. Although sadly because of my small size, I can only mix one color at a time. But hey, I prefer them over plastic and porcelain! I just love the shiny gloss of mixing colors and it is super thin/easy to make large washes.

I would love it if you would give us a tour of the shop in Minnesota! The flowers in your yard are gorgeous. Also, I was lucky enough to order the palette you showed on your channel. I was afraid they would already be sold out. I have another one of her palettes and just love it! This new one I would like to have ready in my camper for our vacations and mini trips. Then my art supplies will be light. Have a wonderful vacation. 🙂

If you want to turn your grandkids on the James Gurney, pick up his series of Dinotopia books. I enjoy them myself and have them here and the kids were totally amazed when I told them about the man who wrote the stories and did all the illustrations, using family, friends, and neighbors for models. I doubt the kids had ever given much thought to the artistic value in story books so these books were perfect for that, and just plain fun.

Appreciate your generous sharing. Is there a lip on the top edge of the pallete, and if not is there are problem with washes running off?
@mindofwatercolor2 жыл бұрын
No lip on the top edge but there is on the sides and bottom by the colors. The lid sits at an angle so color pools away from the top edge. It can a problem be if I create a wash with too much water. I use those little white wells for wetter pools of color. Its still a small palette so definitely not designed for painting large images with a lot of wet washes. A much bigger palette is needed for that.

Speaking of heat, my palette of M.Graham wc paints has been open on my desk for over a month and still hasn’t dried yet here in hot n humid Florida. The purple is especially moist. The others are still tacky to touch. I assume this is normal? I guess the upside is I don’t have to worry about them drying and cracking and falling out in transport.
@mindofwatercolor3 жыл бұрын
They'll never get hard really but semi firm. Firm enough not to run. Various colors will be firmer than others. Another tip is to keep the paint in the wells spread out. Deeper fills will tend to be softer longer.

These palettes are amazing. I actually like that is comes with wells of different sizes, as I am very likely to run out of ultramarine, but something like quin rose lasts forever. And books of James Gurney are great. I recommend both “Color and Light” and “Imaginative Realism”. I’ll check out “Making Color Sing”, thank you!

No need. I don't do anything. Not sure what you mean by fresh. They require rewetting before use as is typical with watercolor.
