Richard Musgrave Evans is my favorite pallet, knife painter - Australian. never looks like cake frosting /icing. He uses a simple color palette and does massive paintings in a couple hours.

Others beat me to it! I was also going to recommend Michael take a look at Richard Musgrave's palette knife beach paintings....they very much give the impression of 'being there' on the day. The incomplete colour mixes are mesmerising. Great video, Michael.TFS!!

This was really fun to watch, I have experimented with using a palette knife and found it was more difficult than I thought it would be. One thing I noticed about my own process and I saw you doing the same thing, is using the palette knife as if it is a brush. I just tackled the painting the way I would do any other painting and I think there is a more subtle slow application process that works better with the palette knife. What I mean is that it might be easier to make slow deliberate strokes with a clean knife each time rather than mixing as you go on the painting. I am no pro on this, it is just something I have learned by watching other palette knife painters. They put paint on then scrape it off too, keeping the knife very clean. Loved this! Thank you for letting us see your process, I think the painting came out beautiful!!

really love this painting! I'll have to try painting in my patio area & in terms of style of painting I will try a few styles. I have a lovely view of rolling hills and forest type trees but also I have traveled all over the world and took many photographs that I intentionally meant to paint someday so I still have the raw images. Plan to print out and use to paint off of. I can actually learn some tips from your videos, you explain very clear!

Great to see you using a pallete knife for a change. The painting came out beautifully. I was a brush man myself for almost three decades and have started using the knife from last couple of years after watching the Russian artist Vladimir Volegov on KZbin. He is the ultimate master of the palette knife and brush combo. Suggest checking out his videos.

I love it, you were able to get some really rich color swatches, energy, and impressionism with the knife. I love painting with palette knives. I did notice when you started with it you were giving it what I call the "death grip", choking the neck rather than working from the handle and trying to control it too much. However, toward the middle of the painting you loosened up, holding the handle and trusting the process, that's when you seemed to have fun and your marks came more fluid. Keep the light grip, use the handle, and use a knife with some spring to it and I think you will begin to see some amazing results. With your eye for things and your amazing sense of color, I think you will blow us all away with what you will create!!! Thank you for being vulnerable and letting us all come along to watch, as artists we all have those days we want to play and try things but are so afraid others will see us. I was out at the river yesterday painting and despite finding an isolated spot, people came around and I immediately tightened up...not happy with the end result. Oh well, I will try again.

Really love how this painting turned out. Lots of energy. One palette knife trick is, if you want a hard edge or straight line like the horizon place the edge of the knife where you want the line, and then draw/scrape the knife away from the line, not toward.

Michael, this was a brave, but good attempt. Palette knives are very different than brushes. When I first started to paint in seriously in oils, my professor, Gillian Pederson-Krag, suggested I try knives because I thought of painting as sculpting. I also was using brushes that were too small and the paintings were not good. I painted in oils using knives exclusively from 1970-1982. From 1974-1999 I painted watercolors and got control of the brushes. I took up oil painting again in December 2014 and have used almost exclusively the right brushes. Your painting is an excellent return. An intresting, good, abstract "mess" when viewed close-up. From 5'-10' it falls into place. I think you should continue to experiment with knives. This was a fine piece.

Hi Michael, long time fan of your vids and fellow painter. I love how experimental you are on a regular basis, you're boldness to be constantly trying new ways of working is admirable and inspiring. This video of you painting with a pallette knife is very entertaining and I commend you for attempting the new way of working right on camera. It's interesting to see the result at the end of the video and your critique session of your own work and I must say that I agree with you about being unsure of the success of the work. I find that your brushwork in many of your other videos is so loose and confident while the pallette knife marks seem quite contained with not as much movement. Obviously you are still getting used to using the knife, I would encourage you to keep going with it and perhaps let the paint collide and mix a bit more and create a more abstract image? Just a suggestion. Always love watching your progress and your commitment to plein-air painting.

Great job, sir! Finally! Palette knives are cool. I think it turned out pretty good! I have seen some painters who paint only with a palette knife, using a brush only rarely to achieve certain effects. They usually use a much bigger palette knife and a much bigger canvas though. That blue-green color (azure) was beautiful. Have a wonderful day! Greetings from the EU!

When I paint entirely with palette knife, the painting always feels a bit too indulgent to me (kind of like frosting!)...I prefer working partially with brush and using palette knife in key moments where I really want texture. Either way, it's a great exercise and I like how the piece came out. Excited to see how you develop the use of palette knife.

I was feeling your pain at points, but overall you came out with a decent painting. Could be worth more experimenting. Anyway…. Spent last week on the Outer Cape, Marconi Beach, Race Point Beach and Newcomb Hollow beach. No plein air this time around, just soaking in the views and lots of great photos for future paintings. Great texture and colors. Love your characteristic spontaniety. Maybe add a touch of another color to the background water, it's a large expanse of the same color.
