Definitely - your brush strokes, values and colors all reflect being there! A painting can express more than a photograph, simply because the painter is expressing himself through the medium and tools he has at hand. Sharing your thought process on what you are doing and why is always so educational, thank you! BTW, you are very inspiring!

Recreating the lived experience Though moving around rocks may commence A sunny day, waves roaring a bit Ultra marine blue made a run for it Reflected sky and rocks Another skill in the toolbox Support the artist with Pa-tre-on “Stay creative” is his denouement 🌊 You captured the colors and energy beautifully. I love it. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛

Michael, thank you for another wonderful painting. It's nice to see the effects of the Sun! Also good is the constant stepping back and questioning of placement, size and value. I got a sense of your joy (glee or happiness) in painting this.

And I think you're right - using a limited pallet brings everything together. The colors are so delicate and connected.

I love the way you made the front rock different from the rocks in the back, in a way that is subtle but really beautiful.

Beautiful painting Michael and I totally agree with you that plein air paintings are better than photos in terms of capturing the atmosphere and essence of the location you painted. I love your videos 😊

I’m glad you’ve hit on recreating the feeling; I was a photography major and amateur landscape photographer for 30 yrs before I took up painting and what I’ve found is just what you said…photography captures the detail of the moment but rarely the feeling you have when you’re in a new place or a favorite place. I think the key is saturated colors and higher contrasts in the painting and as you mention the movement of seeing the brushstrokes. Much as I hate to admit it; paint seems to capture the feeling of the place better.

You really got it! And... A constant grievance of mine is when artists tell me why photographs aren't as artful as paintings. I know that good photographers can capture the lived experience. This to me is a problem rooted in thinking dualistically. In writing it shows up as genre discussions. "I never read mysteries (Sci fi, poetry, memoirs etc...). In music it is styles. Country & Western is rubbish. Jazz is too ethereal. Only classical is real music. I'm with Miles Davis on this point "I'll just play it and you can tell me what box to put it in." He said something like that anyway. I'm a painter, poet, novelist, playwright, photographer, cook, and clown. I like Joni Mitchell, Willie Nelson, Michael, Ondaatje, Mozart, Emily Carr, Ursula K LeGuin, Georgia O'Keefe, Dorothea Lange, Annie Leibovitz and Ansel Adams. I can get on a rant and I am only doing it here because I know how smart you are.

Thanks for your thoughts Jan! Paintings and photographs are good at different things. If I want to listen to music that recreates a lived experience I'll listen to Joni Mitchell over Chopin. But I love them both! When it comes to sharing what it feels like to stand in front of the ocean I prefer painting to photography.

Beautiful artwork, sir! I love it. Amazing location!!! Btw. I am in the middle of the biggest blackout in terms of my internet connection so far. I was completely cut out. I never had the internet on my phone , so I just bought 10GB mobile internet data to watch your video on my phone and I love it! Greetings from the EU! Have a wonderful day!

0:20 fuschia transparency in the thin sea , foreground to the rock, whitewater as it’s background, to your right, in the speckled surface , she wears a full hoop dress, the supporting structure underneath , 1800’s era to guess, two more in the rock white dots just above, white lace hair adornments each, in semi circular shape worn atop their hair, deeper in the room
