I have enjoyed David Baddiel as a comedian and commentator and am very appreciative of the book Jews Don't Count. This helps continue the conversation about antisemitism. Thank you so much for posting this conversation.

He's a highly intelligent individual, and was once funny. But alas, he has a history as a bully - in harness with his fellow bully, Frank Skinner. These two individuals, from their positions of media power and flourishing their luvvie credentials, relentlessly ridiculed a young black professional footballer in the UK. Ridiculed the guy, on national TV, because of his hairstyle. Do not lionise this fn entitled luvvie. These two fn twats made Jason Lee's life a fn misery. Were Jason Lee a Jew, would these two bullies have piled on? Not a chance. And, were a young Jewish sportsman subjected to such ridicule, let's guess which luvvie might step up to condemn such ridicule? Fn A. Baddiel and Skinner: bullies. Don't accept their apologies. It's who they are.

What "conversation about antisemitism"? Didn't you hear what the film maker Josh Fox said [38:26] and with which Mr Baddiel wholeheartedly agreed? "What definitely IS antisemitism is when.. non Jewish people.. tell me what antisemitism is" In other words, if you are not Jewish you don't get a say in what constitutes antisemitism. That is solely in the gift of Jews, according to Mr Baddiel. You want to criticise Israeli treatment of Palestinians, say, and a Jewish person says "That's antisemitic!!" , then you're supposed to accept that without question. You have no comeback. You're not Jewish. That's not a conversation; that's an indoctrination. Shut up and do what you are told! I, of course, think that line of argument is bullshit. White people get a say in what constitutes racism; gentiles get a say in what constitutes antisemitism. Then we can have a conversation.

I read the book last year. Although I am not Jewish, I am a truth seeker and a human and struggle to understand why progressives and even some mainstream Dems seem to be so antisemitic.

I am surrounded by so called "progressives"...Eventhough I 'travel' in those circles (the artsy fartsy world) so to speak, I am not impressed by many of them, because they just don't question things much, it seems to me. They often don't seek truth. Not if it's uncomfortable for them anyway. Some, like the Profs, and well read ones in a readers group I attended for awhile are very interesting, and intelligent. We didn't talk about it, but I knew I was the "odd man out" when it came to Trump, and was the odd man out when it came to the "shutdowns" in 2020. My observation since 2020, and Oct. 7th, is many "progressives" have a kind of addiction to what I call, "the underdog syndrome"...Whatever popular "human rights" movement is active at the time, they just jump on the bandwagon, and don't think, or question at all. I saw this with the BLM movement, "trans agenda", illegal immigration", etc. They love the "underdog", or the perceived "underdog", even if they are evil, like Hamas. They are often quick to judge anyone who questions their ideology, "narrative" etc., as "right wing", ignorant, "racist", etc. They often can't see "the other" as very intelligent. It's snobbery. Many are often NOT tolerant of actually listening, when it comes to certain subjects. I have had this experience many times. I have one "lefty" friend who is not like that, and I find her exceptional. She knows various people with differing political beliefs, and is a great listener. Trained as a counselor for one thing. We haven't talked politics much, but when we did, it was a relief for me that she actually listened, and didn't make some assumptive, snide remark like, "you need to stop watching "Fox news". I don't have TV, and don't watch, "Fox news." As far as the Israeli/ Palestinian situation goes my Jewish friend already said years ago Israel was committing genocide when there wasn't even a war on. I had to correct her, and I am not a Jew. She didn't really acknowledge me on it though. So, of course now it's definitely genocide, but I haven't seen her much lately. One arts, and progressive community plastered pro- Palestine posters everywhere. It's always been that way here though. They are totally ignorant about the MB, Jihad, and don't seem to care to learn at all about it. I agree with Dennis Prager. "Truth is not a left wing value." That's my observation anyway.

As an Israeli by choice, who made Aliyah 35 years ago, I find it sad that it seems that the identity of Jews in the diaspora is totally about being an ethnic minority suffering discrimination. My Jewish identity is based upon thousands of years of proud heritage. To people like me October 7 isn't about the bad things done to us as Jews. The phenomenon of people in the world doing bad things to Jews dates back as long as there have been Jews. My Jewish identity is about being true to what we are as Jews and if anyone has a problem with that we are going to stand up for our rights to continue to be who we are, by whatever means necessary. From our perspective being Jewish is being unapologetic for striking back at those who deny us the right of being who we are. I don't care if I am disliked. I don't want to take people to task for being anti-Jewish idiots. I think that any Jew who insists upon living among Jew haters and thinks that being Jewish is about converting them to Jew lovers or just forcing them not to express their hatred openly, is shallow and is missing out on the experience of living the Jewish identity. The Israelis who you describe as feeling what it's like to be an oppressed minority after October 7 are the Israelis whose Jewish identity is lacking. The rest of us here, since October 7, are feeling what the Hasmoneans felt after beating the shit out of the Greeks and achieving their independence and sovereignty, for which we've been celebrating Hanukah every year since.

Yes you are right. But we can't deny what we have been. I used to see myself as a leftist, humanist, French Jew even though I spent about 30 years of my life in Israel. I discovered that the people I thought to have common ground with, have, in reality, always hated us or have sold us for better results at the next elections, that the left is behaving the same way they did during WWII i.e. collaborating with Evil, and that all the ethics and the causes I fought for are nowadays doomed by a systematic inversion of values. Jews could be socialists, feminists, anti-racists, they would be anyway considered as the opposite if they are not self-hating Jews, in another word "meshumadim". And that's a big blow. The only definition I could recognise myself in today, is "Proud Jew" and that, as you said, is enough.

When travelling abroad, I identify as a Jew or an Israeli, and I am met with skepticism or bewilderment. I am tall, blond and blue eyed, so how can I be a Jew? On the flip side, in Israel, I often get a similar response. My understanding is that prejudice and bigotry is present in most all of us, and this is what I have tried to "call out" whenever I come up against racism, anti-semitism and bullying. When bigotry and bullying (human faults) arise, we must speak out, for silence is consent.

I appreciate this discussion. I am someone who has great respect for Jewish culture, the values towards academia and I’m so proud to say that American humor is rooted in Jewish humor. I hate antisemitism. I also hate what Israel is doing to the Palestinians, just as I hated the Rwandan genocide, the genocide against the Uigers. I get most of my history from Israeli Jewish historians. I don’t see what Israel is doing has anything to do with Judaism, at all. But I do recognize the painful irony that the state of Israel, which is populated by primarily Jewish people and largely was created as a result of the Holocaust, is acting completely without impunity in regards to the very institutions (ICCJ, UN) that were created from the Nuremberg trials. But listening to this discussion shows me how people who so often are confronted with these snide and hateful antisemetic remarks about money and power (The George Soros comments in particular infuriate me) can just feel that criticism to the Israeli State is also antisemetic. Have either of you read Avi Shlaim’s book? Or Ilan Pappe’s? Norman Finklestein’s? Being against ethnic cleansing or genocide is just that, it’s not antisemetic, in fact my strong feelings about this (I protested the South Africans in campus anti apartheied movements in the 80’s in the US) come from reading so much about the holocaust, the rage I felt from reading so many holocaust memoirs and WW2 History.

You are wrong on so many issues it is hard to know where to start. Israel was not created because of the Holocaust. The Idea was that Israel was needed to be created as a refuge for all the Jews in Arab countries who were being persecuted as well as a place for European Jews to flee the Holocaust before it started. It just took too long, not because it was Arab land but the Arabs did not want a Jewish State. There is still zero evidence of a Genocide by Israel because there is no Genocide, only on the part of Gazans who crossed their own territorial border and killed Jews. You then go on to talk about the apologetic Jews who try their best to be accepted by the baying crowd and denigrate their own people.

Btw the "But Jews are rich (and successful, powerful, connected, etc.) so they're not like other persecuted minorities" defense of antisemitism is classic Marxism, which divides the world into rich and powerful oppressors and poor and weak oppressed. Not much nuance there but then Marxism was never very reality-based and always more about polemics and the politics of revenge. Not Socialism, mind you, but hardcore Soviet-style Marxism, still the dominant version in the world. So naturally they don't view antisemitism as comparable to other forms of ethnic and religious prejudice and hatred, because unlike most hated and maligned minority groups, Jews are rich and powerful (or so they're seen as), so they don't get to complain, and if anything merit the kinds of hatred they get. It's all quite sick, but then we're talking about antisemites and Marxists, who aren't exactly beacons of grounded sanity. So this "famous person" he referred to (Jeremy Corbyn?), is clearly an antisemite, but also not a progressive, rather more a Marxist. You can't be a progressive and say such things, which is deeply regressive, which is what Marxism is.

The proximity between binary thinking and anti-Semitism, as it is emphasized here, this proximity calls for a theological light, I believe. Indeed, what is the Jewish heritage (the Old Testament), if not an inspired, fundamental dramaturgy, where the framework of binary thinking explodes with each line ? Example: David, at the same time the Chosen One, the poet king, the greatest of the sons of Israel, .... and the same David, as much a bastard murderer of Uriah, in the most sordid way possible.... It is impossible to read the Bible with a binary thought (Good versus Bad, Progressive versus Reactionary, etc.).

The situation in the Middle East CAN improve once people realise that Arab nationalists and Islamists have been complaining for 80 years about people of our great grandparents' generation being pressured to move from one side of the 1948 Armistice Line to the other side, a distance of on average maybe 5 miles. The land on the other side was essentially identical to the land they left behind, so was the language, so was the food. It was like moving from Connecticut to Massachusetts.

It absolutely is. Never before in history has every move a country at war (on 7 fronts in this case) been so obscenely scrutinized. The Ottoman empire collapsed because islam had its head in the sand. the British created an interim mandate. Churchill created trans-Jordan for the arabs. The UN partioned the remaining land. The jews created a superstate on malarial swamp and desert. The arabs created havoc. The problem is that "Palestinians" is a contsruct not an authentic identity and without identity there can be no vision. Hating the jews results from an unchecked tribal psychology. for me, the starting point for understanding the lay of left-wing anti-antisemitism in the west today is probably mehdi hasan, who's managed to widely maintain the perception of a good faith actor (even, an especially good faith actor) despite consistently having takes since oct 7th that really ought to have been exposed as bad faith. the jeremy corbyns, owen joneses, yanis varoufakises et al, even though they've all turned the dial to 11 since the attack, are less widely held to be good faith actors, owing to their clearer preference for various forms of leftist authoritarian politics, which hasan has largely skated beyond - despite some current & previous super-authoritarian takes

It does appear...and with the rise of populism all over Europe and in teh States then there were legitmate reasons to be concerned, not just as Jews but for people of colour and other minority groups who suffer violence on a regular basis in America and often as Refugees and poc in european countries. The problem is that now criticism of Israel has been named as anti-semetic by some Jewish bodies and some Jews so now the meaning and definition of anti-semetism and the real risks of the rise of antisemetism has been confused with criticising Israel. Criticising Israel is NOT antisemetic but unfortunately David wants people to call out antisemetism and stand up against it but he seems entirely unable to defend or speak up about other peoples right including atm Palestinians but also other refugees fleeing various countries..Syria,Iraq,Afghanistan...apparently he seems unable to speak up for them...only to talk about the possibility of the rise of antisemetism whilst we see Palestinians killed and other anti refugee rhetoric that results in people dying in the sea !!!!
