I like how the assembly begins loosely reminiscent of the beginning of a painting rather than rigidly as inpainting by the numbers, as in stalls in England or the US. And we get to see the beautiful shapes of the horses from all angles. Yes, this style must be preserved. It is also the difference between democracy which is often chaotic and autocracy which is an oppressive peace. The guy in the dark blue suit is a bully and should be disqualified unless bullying is part of the local macho tradition.

What an interesting event this was to experience. So many questions! Initially, I wondered how/why they would do a start with such chaos. Then, I recognized that the anticipation and buildup is a deep contributor to the contest itself. The audience is quite the show too. Seem to all be dark haired men - very few children or women that I could see. Thank you for sharing this with us

Are the horses not trained ?? It seems like a medieval tradition.

There are certain starting requirements for the horses: Mare or gelding, half-blood (i.e. no stallions, no thoroughbreds). The horses are selected for the race by a commission from the breeding areas around Siena, including Sardinia. Suitable horses are selected and sorted further until - four days before the Palio - ten horses are publicly raffled off to the ten cantrades taking part. These are all traditional processes and fixed rules. And no, the horses are definitely trained and in good condition.

There are also traditional rules for the horses that take part in the Palio. They are half-bloods (not pure thoroughbreds). Mares and geldings are allowed to take part. The horses traditionally come from areas around Sienna, and also from the island of Sardinia.

Sure, it's a risky game. Thanks to many years of experience on the Campo, the most dangerous spots are known - especially the outside of the curve that leads to the town hall. The safety precautions have been greatly improved, especially in "modern times" - for the benefit of the Fantini as well as the horses. But you are right: the stone pillars on the inside of the racetrack have been standing there for hundreds of years. They do not seem to pose any danger

@ Seems to not pose any danger? How about putting those poles that go up and down to allow access to secure areas. Rubberize the top to prevent slipping. I subscribe to the serviceman approach for safety- If you can make it better or safer do it. The old adage of - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, which according to the laws of Murphy is guaranteed to create a future problem.

@@pdnisbett the start of the race is called "mossa" and it's very complicated because of rivalries among the "contrade" (each participant represents an area of the city of Siena called contrada). In this case Civetta (black and red) wants its adversary Leocorno (white and orange) to be in a bad position. It is probable that it also has some kind of agreement to favor Istrice (blue, red and white stripes). The problem with Istrice is that it has its adversary, Lupa (black and white), on its side (second and third position), with a very promising horse (Benitos) and a very experienced jokey (Velluto). Valdimontone (pink and yellow) and Nicchio (blue) are also adversaries and side by side. All positions are drawn by lot. The race was won by Lupa.
