I got my Emperor Palpatine with the mail in promotion that Kenner did. I remember as a kid feeling really perturbed when he came out in stores. I felt like my slowly collecting points and waiting 6-8 weeks for delivery meant nothing.
@alphaprobe20
@alphaprobe20 4 жыл бұрын
I agree- I think that’s why he sat around in stores for so long. As a kid, I missed the ESB Boba Fett mail in promotion, but I had older friends who somehow kept the card backs. That was perfect timing for me, Rotj and enough proofs of purchases to get an Emperor in the mail. At one point, I had two Emperor figures, but neither was actually purchased at a store. Enough kids had them already to waste the shopping opportunity on that one!

EDF Central- I was totally in the same boat! Toys on Christmas or birthday. I was lucky because I had an older friend who was starting to grow out of the whole SW thing. He just happened to have a few card backs from ESB that he gave to me. I combined them with a few from my birthday haul to mail away. The irony is we just tossed the card backs! They weren’t in great shape, but from what I’ve seen on the collectors market, they would be worth something to somebody today....

I wish Darkseid would have been a peg warmer in my area. I never saw him or an of New God Villains in stores. In fact in the rural part of Missouri I grew up in it was damn near impossible to find any villain figures back in the 80's. We only had Walmart, K-mart, Venture, and Kay-bee. I bought Kang for 50 cents (retail clearance, sealed) around 1990. I remember Bob the Goon being common but Collectible Toys and Values trying to puff it up as scarce or prematurely discontinued. F.L.U.F.F.I. and Darkseid were figures I really wanted but never got. I recall Darkseid being hard to find. Probably because stores in my area figured out to buy one case for every store in the region or something like that.

As a kid, I loved that toy line (and movie), I had all of it but there wasn't that much to get. The Kraken was awesome, like almost all my old great toys, I either threw it away or gave it away....sigh... of course Kraken and Godzilla had some fights. Very much agree about Medusa, I thought she was the coolest monster and scene in the movie but no toy. The Scorpions and the 2 headed wolf beast would have been cool too. And Charon made a god stand in for the Emperor when I was in a Star Wars mood.
@hamletstragedy8988
@hamletstragedy8988 4 жыл бұрын
I had the Shogun Warriors Godzilla and had plans for a fight between him and the Kraken. I imagine they didn’t make Medusa for financial censorship reasons. To me Medusa was an epic monster; sadly, the average toy designer and parent probably only noticed her physical appearance (boobs out) and final fate in the film and probably opted to leave her out. I’ve seen customizers online “add” to the line by making characters in the same style as the originals!

Great video! I was born in 1980. I follow your channel because I'm a fan of 70's toys. I started to collect action figures again in the summer of 2000. The goal was to finish off my old lines. While I was doing that I discovered the brilliance of 70's figures. I never knew about Mego. My mindset was there was only G.I. Joe and then Star Wars came along. I honestly thought that kids in the 70's only had that and matchbox toys. Once I finished the lines of my youth, I dove into the 70's pool. You 70's kids would be very impressed with my collection of your era. Anyways, yes, you have hit the target with these figures. Darkseid, I last seen him in the stores in 1994. The Emperor, I want to say 1989 for me. The store down the street from me had a racks of Power Of The Force figures still in '89. Really cool video. Great job as always.

Agree 100% with Kang and Toht. Where I lived, Martian Manhunter was the Super Powers peg warmer. In fact, our Woolworths had what appeared to be two or three cases worth of just him. I would have put the Robotech Master as one. Our Kaybee was selling him for ten cents (yes, 10¢!!) and still had three or four of them when they finally closed the store. As far as Joe's, no one beat Colonel Courage as a peg warmer. The Sgt Savage figures sold before he did. Not sure why that was. (Edit: I liked the Sgt Savage line, so I'm not hating!)

In the 80's there was always a Silverhawks villain somewhere pegwarming. Whether that bull guy or Buzz Saw, I always remember seeing at least one at any toy shop discount bin. For some reason I never bought one even though they were marked down to .50 cents at one point. They just didn't interest me.

There are so many 80's figures to rank in the top 10 peg warmers. Some of them actually became the holy grail of their collections. I think a great deal of them are female characters or overproduced secondary characters.

Bob the goon and Kang were the top 2 I recall but Lex Luthor with self punch himself from the toy biz dc line with Batman in 89 in the head action should have had a second runner up mention.

1 - Kang was in the first Secret Wars comics - barely. He betrayed Doom and Doom had Ultron whack him early on; he then casually brought him back when he stole the Beyonder's power, just to show that he could, and then sent him back to his future timeline in one motion - so yeah, he was an odd choice. 2 - The 1989 Batman novelization had a great closer for Bob: 'Good Old Bob. Good Old Dead Old Bob'. IIRC, some fans thought Joker did this so he could have his other goons dress Bob up as him so he could fake his death at the end. Bob made a semi-return in the reference-rich Lego DC games, in the Super-Villain game, wherein Joker and another baddie get chased by a mutated creature sent after them that Joker identifies with surprise as "Robert!?" and is in fact supposed to be Good Old Bob.

While I loved my Toht, Thallo and Kang figures, I can't deny they warmed some pegs. I sometimes made Toht my sinister Cobra middle man. Still baffling that Secret Wars made Kang and Baron Zemo, so many more obvious villains to make. Didn't they watch the cartoons on the air at the time? Must be a dozen Spiderman villains every kid knew, but Zemo and Kang...?

Green goblin, Rhino, Electro, Scorpion, Kingpin, Mysterio, Kraven, Shocker, Juggernaut, Beetle, Sandman, Lizard, Vulture. See? And that's just Spidey villains, X-Men had Juggernaut, Captain America had Red Skull. If only they made Videoman and Swarm. "SwaRrrm sWarRm SwArrM" Ok, those last 2 might have been peg warmers.

"who the heck is kang?" god, i know this feeling... it's hard to want a figure when you have no familiarity/connection to the character.. i experienced this many times, passing by figures of characters i wasn't familiar with, only to watch a series years later & _then_ wanting the figure, only to learn how expensive they've become... if only i knew then what i know now 😅

@@CoriolanusQuince ok that explains it, i wasn't into most team based comics back when i read them (x-men & jla being the exceptions, & i still dropped those eventually)... that aside, i didn't mean so much about kang specifically, but just about leaving a toy on the shelf because i wasn't familiar with them & then wanting the figure years later
