Summary:
Veterinary oncologists are using the drug Palladia for dogs with many types of cancer now. Dr. Megan Duffy explains why.
Notes:
Is Palladia safe? Does it have a lot of side effects? Does giving my dog a cancer drug at home multiple times a week make my dog “toxic”? Can my dog with other health problems take this drug safely?
Palladia was approved for dogs with high-grade mast cell tumors in dogs over a decade ago. But since then, veterinary oncologists have started using it in many solid tumor types. They’ve also tweaked the doses to lessen the risk of side effects.
Veterinary oncologist Dr. Megan Duffy joins us for an in-depth look at this “kind of weird, exciting drug.” She explains a little about how it works, when it is used, and answers ALL the questions that came up in our Facebook Dog Cancer Support Group about this drug.
If your veterinarian wants to start your dog on Palladia, and you’re wondering why … this is a must-watch video for you because Dr. Duffy has advice about how to know if Palladia might help YOUR dog’s case.

My pit mix has an inoperable adrenal gland tumor. She was diagnosed at 8 yrs. She started Palladia and was on it for quite some time but then the side effects (diarrhea, stmoxh problems became too much and was effecting her quality of life so we stopped it. She is now 11 yrs old and although the tumor grew after stopping it she is still with us!

Excellent podcast. My dog Toby (8yrs chocolate Labrador) had a high grade MCT removed August 2022 with evidence of some splenic and liver involvement. Commenced Palladia September 2022. Tolerated it pretty well and continues to take it after a break for a few months. Cancer currently in remission. Great drug administered in my case by a super team of oncologists in UCD Veterinary Hospital, Dublin, Ireland.

We use Palladia for 2 different dogs. One has an inoperable thyroid tumor. He has been on Palladia for about 6-7 months now. The mass has shrunk over 3 cm, which is amazing. Our other dog has an inoperable heart mass (chemodectoma). He has been on Palladia for about 3 months now. We had our follow-up echo today, and we are happy to say that his mass has shrunk a small amount! We are so thankful for our oncology team and Palladia!

My dog isn't tolerating Palladia, but we tried and are choosing to let her live with the disease now. She had very bad gastric issues and her quality of life wasn't good. 9kilo (35mg dose 3days per week and Omeprazole) I'm glad we tried and we have to live with our discission. Thank you for the video. We still would recommend trying.

My dog Jake was diagnosed with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Surgeon after biopsy sent him home to die. Didn't listen and opted to go to the oncologist. He has been on palladia and piroxicam. He started on January 12 and is doing great. Tumor is gone, lung nodule is gone. Not bad side effects. His appetite is again veracious. We give him Cerenia on palladia nights and pepcid on the piroxicam nights just in case. He has other health issues but he has been doing awesome - and we are staying the course. It really is a miracle for him.

Thank you for this timely video! My vet oncologist recommended we start it as treatment for TCC and an adrenal/lymph node tumor in hopes it will treat both. Trying to absorb all the info I can!

So happy to have helped even just a little bit. Using Palladia in a case like your dog's makes a lot of sense, because it's going to possibly help limit the growth and spread of BOTH! Best of luck to you and your pup -- meanwhile, here's our article on TCC: www.dogcancer.com/articles/types-of-dog-cancer/bladder-cancer-in-dogs-including-transitional-cell-carcinoma/

We’ve just had a very extreme reaction to chemo (doxorubicin) and I am looking for this type of alternative. How do we try to see if this is a possibility and how do we access this?

Thank you for the video! Great information needed to ease my mind a little. My dog has been on Palladia and prednisone for a little over two weeks and I’m trying to figure out a homemade diet. We’ve made the switch but not sure she’s getting in every nutrient that is vital. There isn’t a animal dietitian in my area that our veterinarian can refer us to. I guess my only worry if that I’m not giving her all the nutrients she needs. What can we supplement with this drug or is there anything we should avoid? Can I give milk thistle and medicinal mushrooms?
@DogCancer

Here's our article on Palladia that goes over the meds to avoid. Check with your veterinarian for your dog specifically though! www.dogcancer.com/articles/drugs/palladia-for-dogs/ For a multivitamin, a lot of us use EverPup, it's a great multi plus more. And here's our articles on milk thistle and medicinal mushrooms, both of which usually can be given with Palladia, however, it's always best to check with your veterinarian, of course: www.dogcancer.com/articles/supplements/medicinal-mushrooms-for-dogs/ www.dogcancer.com/articles/supplements/milk-thistle-for-dogs/

So my dog has Renal Lymphoma. We took out the kidney, no signs of metastasis.... So would this be an option for her even though she has lymphoma to help prevent other pop up tumors (presumably?)
@DogCancer

Check with your veterinarian or oncologist -- it's not necessarily going to help with systematic cancers like lymphoma, but if they are only occurring in an organ ... maybe?

what is the appropriate dose for a 40 kg dog
@DogCancer
@DogCancer 8 күн бұрын
Hi! Dosing is always based on weight generally, but other factors will influence what dose your veterinarian recommends to start. Depending upon how your dog tolerates the drug, that might be increased or decreased over the course of taking it. Here's our article with the details: www.dogcancer.com/articles/drugs/palladia-for-dogs/

Has anyone tried using this drug for hepatocellular carcinoma (liver mass)? My 10 yo Irish Setter has had 3 removed so far, and now he has a fourth. We do not want to subject him to another surgery… 😢

Definitely ask your oncologist about this. According to Dr. Duffy, it's being used on many solid tumors, even ones that you wouldn't immediately think of.
