Absolutely love daylilies. So easy to grow and I admit I kind of forget about them, enjoying their flowers when in bloom. Loving the info about edible flowers in your videos and am wanting to try some as we build our new gardens in our new home.

Enjoyable video! Along with irises daylilies should be called “erosion soldiers” .With their network of roots and phalanx-like foliage they keep steep streambanks and gullies in check.

Calling all daylily lovers! (Especially those with an affinity for Gilbert H. Wild and Son - WHY DID THEY HAVE TO DISABLE COMMENTS ON THEIR VIDEOS?) I’m looking for a Gilbert H. Wild and Son daylily called ‘Worlds Fair’. (No apostrophe.) According to its listing on the database of the American Daylily Society, it was a “creamy yellow self”. For those not in the know, “self” basically means “solid”. So it was a solid creamy yellow. Judging by its introduction year of 1964, I assume this daylily was named after the sweetest and most beautiful event of the 20th century, the celebration of peace through understanding...the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Doesn’t surprise me much, as Jackson & Perkins’ 1964 Rose of the Year was the velvety red hybrid tea World’s Fair Salute. It is not to be confused with the floribunda rose ‘World’s Fair’, introduced for the _1939_ New York World’s Fair. Sadly, both of those roses seem to have fallen through the cracks too. I checked GHW&S’s website, but they don’t have the Worlds Fair daylily. I would have left a comment on one of their KZbin videos, but they disabled comments! Please, someone - I don’t care if you’re from GHW&S, or you just really like daylilies - help a 1964 New York World’s Fair fan out! I would love for ‘Worlds Fair’ to be the first daylily I ever plant. My late father, a native of Long Island, went to the 1964 New York World’s Fair as a boy, because his dad worked there. I’m sure he would have loved that daylily. I’ve never even seen any photos of the ‘Worlds Fair’ daylily, but it must be as beautiful as the fair whose name it bears.

I am another daylilliy fan, lifelong, and that makes quite awhile. But guess what? Due to the Global climate change there is now a daylilly rust which is preventing the propagation and culture of them in Florida anymore. After spending several hundred dollars on nice bulbs over the past few years, and only getting one plant to produce blooms, I finally phoned the IFAS with the University of Florida where a woman told me the “no one is growing daylillies in Florida anymore “. It seems that the daylilly rust has won down here. While there are a few disease resistant varieties, and I did purchase one of them before I ever heard on this problem. That is the ONLY plant which has survived this plight and it still manages to produce flowers. Suggested to me were roses, dahlias, marigolds and zinnas. Lily’s are gone.
