Palpatine is literally the purest villain. He wasn't motivated by greed, acceptance, revenge, or anything like that. He just had an innate determination to be the most powerful being through the dark side and then used other people's weaknesses, misconceptions, and ignorance to conduct his political machinations and work his way to the top (right under the Jedi's noses). So much of this plotline is underrated when people think of Star Wars, but it's my favorite part. Great video!
@colbywidener70925 ай бұрын
Execpt he's a Sith, so greed and hate are very much motivation for him
@saarang75725 ай бұрын
@@colbywidener7092 I could be misunderstanding, but I think the Sith way is to allow yourself to feel greed, hate, and other negative motions in order to draw power from them. I don’t know if that necessarily means Palpatine is motivated specifically by greed for money or hate for some person or idea like other beings might be. He simply does anything to elevate himself into more power. At least that’s my interpretation from what I’ve watched and read of him, but that’s why I love palpatine as a villain 😁
@colbywidener70925 ай бұрын
@saarang7572 You pretty much understand it. But what I'm saying is that those are all a part of the sith way to achieve power and to keep power. A Sith being selfish and narcissistic will always allow negative and destructive behavior to dominate their life like greed and hate, and any positive behavior like love or compassion is quickly denounced and forgotten
@Brainflayer4 ай бұрын
He embodies a line from Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil "A living thing seeks above all to discharge its strength-life itself is WILL TO POWER." He didn't do it for love or revenge or greed, his deepest desire, his dream above all else was to see his power and control stretch across the entire galaxy and beyond. His entire life was Will to Power and the struggle to gain that power, but it ultimately left him brittle and inflexible, once he had that ultimate power as Emperor he had no plans to use it towards any real goal, he simply sat content on his throne until his pride and arrogance killed him.

Damn… using that shot at the end was powerful. In a way it’s haunting to see that after all the manipulation and death that he caused, he just sits there and watches the galaxy suffer. But in another way it’s almost… sad? Isn’t there a saying that dictators are often the loneliest people or something like that? It’s almost like after 40+ years of tyranny, Palpatine had no one left around him so he just sits there thinking in his head that he had accomplished everything he wanted for his own selfish desires, but from an outside point of view he’s nothing more than a lonely old man.
@Darth_Xionn5 ай бұрын
It'd almost be sad, if he wasn't so gleefully evil.
@christopherpoet4585 ай бұрын
Well, sorta. The plan from the beginning was the distruction of the Jedi and post order 66, it was known to some extent survivors remained. So the hunt and the dream had not truly been completed. Hence why Vader spent a good majority of the early years hinting Jedi Survivors. Now, in terms of the current cannon, this is all. Not much more too it other than to sit back and rule a galaxy. But... if you take in a little inspiration from Legends and very loose hints in cannon, something else did get his attention. We have had a very small number of scenes that suggested Palpatine became concerned about something from the Unknown Regions. Something that would be an excercentral threat to the Universe. Now, it is worth noting that the mentions are just vague fragments and could be a meaningless as him just finding Exogal. But if it were something else, it would potentially explain the Death Star and his rapid militarization efforts that continued even after the Galaxy was mostly subdued under the boot of the Empire. For the record, I am not saying he is a good guy. But... I can absolutly see a reality where Palpatine sees something in his visions and has an "Oh s*it we are all f*cked." moment and proceed to plan accordingly. Another argument to be made are the contingency orders he left in case of his death. Some of the planets, as seen in BF2, were loyal to the Empire. The possible argument that could be made here is that Palpatine left behind orders to destroy or hinder these planets in specific ways so that whatever "threat" did some would not be able to utilize whatever advantage it could gain from these worlds. Again, this is grasping at straws and nothing is official, but in Legends Palpatine had favored the construction of the Death Star was a weapon against the Uconn Vog. Doubt we will ever see them in cannon, but in Legends I think it was at least confirmed that Palpatine was aware that firepower was going to be the determining factor between victory and defeat and the design of the ISD 1 was intended to be a front line battle ship against the Vog. The ISD 2 coming about due to rebel fighter tactics while still trying to keep it's intended role. And I think there was a video that did explain how the Uconn Vog would have had a harder time fighting the Empire than it did the Republic. Now, you would think if any of this is true than Palpatine would clue others in, but Sith are Sith and by his nature of being absolutly drunk on power, I think he just figured he could use the potential crisis to his advantage. The problem with all of this is in the Sequels and the "tantrum" he has over losing the Empire. But the Final Order (as awful as the name is) did still carry on with the same military doctrine the Empire had. Which still begs the question of the possibility we may still see something worse than Palpatine come to the galaxy. Take it all with a grain of salt. It is a lot of hopeful thinking.

Another amazing edit! I love how you started it with, "The Republic is in decay. Corporations continue to gain a political foothold as more and more senators succumb to corruption." It's important to remember the greed at the heart of all of this. The greed for more money and more life, both of which stem from a pathological fear of loss that results from a lack security during crucial developmental phases. So many people in both our real and fictional worlds cause endless suffering because of their inability to recognize their fear. More people in the real world (including me) need to follow Yoda's advice and "Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose." Thank you for this beautiful reminder!

It took me a lot longer than it should have to realize how strongly Palpatine's rise to power and the fall of the Republic is inspired by Hitlers rise to power and the fall of the Weimar Republic at the time. No one saw what was happening right in front of their eyes until Palpatine directly ordered the execution of anyone who would oppose him. And even then, the majority of the people still applauded as he burned the remnants of the Republic. Lucas did an amazing job telling this story.
@rob6927Ай бұрын
Not really, he didn't secretly cause the chaos, just took advantage of it. For once, he never even pretended to like democracy or want to preserve it. Same with Napoleon, or Octavian and the Roman republic, they took advantage of chaos they didn't create. Although they both claimed to be the protectors of the republic. So those two would be more similar to Palpatine actually. But anyone can see what they want in it... It's a movie...
@RayvenGuardАй бұрын
@@rob6927 Yes, he took advantage of the chaos at that time. But he and his supporters were also nurturing the existing chaos and the hatred of the people, directing it against those they wanted to eliminate. Palpatine never pretended to like democracy, either. He just never said openly that he wants to get rid of it. However, he was always promoting a strong leader to take control and bad-mouthing the slow decision-making process in the Republic, as well as the democratic decisions themselves, if they were unpopular with certain people. The difference is that in the movies, it seems more like Palpatine is following a grand plan. But he does also have moments where he improvises, and uses a situation that he probably did not expect to his advantage. I actually doubt that he really predicted all the events from beginning to end. Much rather, I believe that he just caused chaos to destabilize the Republic, knowing that it would make the people susceptible to his messages, as it did during the Weimar times and today again in many countries. And I don't think he could have caused a civil war, if there had not been any hostilities to begin with. So the only real difference in the end would be how well they both had planned their take-over of power. The overall events are very clearly inspired by the events during the Weimar Republic, though. Especially the way Palpatine became chancellor, the legislations he passes to end the crises in the Republic, all the way to his announcement to end the Republic. It's not a one to one representation of historic events, of course, but the connections are definitely there.
