I just realised something about Palpatine. Nobody in the original trilogy ever calls him "Palpatine", they simply call him "The Emperor". So if your watching the movies in release order with no outside knowledge, when you get to the prequels you'd have very little idea who the future Emperor is. Sure, there's clues *in* the movies, such as when he uses Padme to get the Cancellorship or when Dooku says a sith lord is in control of the senate, but you can't be 100% sure until that scene where he tells Anakin he's a sith lord.

Vader was destined to be twice as strong as Palpatine. If he won at Mustafar, the Galaxy would have been remade. Maybe he would even be redeemed and turn into a Grey Jedi, which means he would have been able to use both sides of the force. So yeah, Vader was more powerful than he could imagine. Even though he had that suit which reduced his power, he is revealed to be a better Light-Saber duelist than Sidious.
