I could really see a Pokemon game where the goal is to renovate an abandoned area of the world and become the gym leader as the final goal. Like you not only find the Pokemon you will use as the gym leader but you have to build/rebuild the gym, collect a couple of other sub-boss NPCs to be inside the gym so players have to run the gauntlet. You can choose if you want to be a themed gym or more of a free for all. Put traps in or just have it be a boss rush. You could still fight other gym leaders, but it's to get them to respect you as a fellow gym leader, and you could have periodic fights with either AI or player controlled Pokemon trainers coming to test themselves at your gym. And for the greater multiplayer aspect even basically build your own full gym roster with your friends.

Travel the world collecting Pokemon and dueling the locals in realtime fights, battling Team Rocket, etc. with a town/gym-building sim as the backbone, would make an excellent modern Pokemon game. The combat and capturing in Palworld is fairly simple but generally satisfying, and I bet Gamefreak, properly motivated, could do it even better. End game could be hosting a massive championship at your gym or something.

Ya, people focus so much on what you CAN do, since you CAN be mean, you CAN overwork them, and you CAN capture and butcher humans like in RimWorld. But I just love to pamper my Pals and work with them, the game puts the Pals at the front of everything you do giving you more connection to them, Pokemon just doesn't feel like it's putting Pokemon at the front. Pokemon focuses more on the 8 gyms formula and the human characters. Palworld focuses more on the Pals.

There was a time in Palworld where I dodged an attack and it hit a member of a herd that I didn't know was behind me, and the herd of Pals charged into the fight on my side. While it didn't last because my Pal's area attack hit them at one point, it was cool seeing pals on the sidelines react to being in the crossfire. Basically, the fights feel like they're actually happening in the world, where in Pokemon they're battles taking place in some alternate world of their own. Palworld also does interaction so well, so many special and cute animations for them working, relaxing, and petting them, meanwhile Pokemon is just they smile and an effect plays around their head.

What folks seem to misunderstand is that litigation often takes a while, often times many months, first to determine if there is enough evidence for a case, whether it's worth going after, etc. And that doesn't even include the time actually happening within the court system (which has different rules depending on where the case is being presented). The game was only recently released, any start of litigation will likely occur within a few months. *EDIT:* Some clarification for folks, Nintendo has no case on the basis of Palworld's game design or monster design. However, there's some precursory evidence that Palworld may have utilized Pokemon's models directly, rearranging parts and pieces to create new monsters. This is something that could only be discovered since the release of the game. Nintendo may have a direct case if they can prove it to the courts.

Difficulty settings would be such an easy win for Game Freak! They also should find ways to make the games quicker - skippable cut scenes, faster movements, etc, particularly if there’s a way of doing it for a second run through; that’s how you keep streamers coming back for example, where they don’t have to sit through all the boring bits again.

While Pokemon does canonically have several people who are said to spar/wrestle with pokemon to train them, they don't necessarily need to go that route to have the human involved in battle. Give the human a set of orders they can give that boost the pokemon in certain ways. Kind of like the raid cheers from Scarlet/violet, but make them part of your turn. So you can give an order, and then your pokemon acts. Give the player a choice of certain ones as they reach milestones in the game (such as getting a new badge, taking out an enemy team base, or reaching certain numbers in the Pokedex.) I'll give a few examples, and what their effects could be. Brace for impact: Your pokemon resists the attack one step further, but also only deals 75% damage this turn. Strike Again!: your pokemon makes an additional attack of their primary type with low power (low enough to not always be the best option, high enough to not be useless.) While the vibes are definitely pretty edgy, at the same time there are parts that feel so much better than pokemon. You explore the overworld with a Pal out, you can ride your Pal to run faster, you can have a unique Pal mount for running, flying, and surfing, and it feels earned because that's something you caught or hatched and crafted the saddle for. In Scarlet/Violet it's a single mount immediately given to you for all movement types and in Arceus it's a single designated pokemon (that you don't actually have or get to use in combat) for each movement type, and all of these are granted through story progression rather than something you go out of your way to earn. Also, seeing Pals in your base eating, sleeping, working, feels so much more alive than pokemon camps, where you're a static camera watching your pokemon play a single repeating animation.

Personally, I LIKE the dystopian part of palworld because it kinda actd as a mirror to some aspects of Pokemon that they gloss over. Ellen's comment right at the end about "I want an evee to help me build a shed" makes me think that the way Pokemon could make a "good vibes palworld" might actually be to *also* crib from Animal Crossing. On a gameplay level, it actually has a decent amount in common with a basebuilder--you're collecting resources to construct and upgrade structures--and its aesthetics are a good fit with Pokemon's. Imagine a setup where you're building up a settlement on a totally wild or abandoned island--with the open world and big battles from Palworld that Luke talks about, and then you bring back captured pokemon to your base where they work *with* you (instead of being quasi-enslaved laborers) to construct an Animal Crossing esque town that you need to keep safe inside your walls.

I was playing Horizon: Forbidden West yesterday and seeing Luke's character using a bow+arrow, dodging attacks, while being backed up by a Pal companion gave me the feeling of playing H:FW. I haven't played Palworld, I don't really have an interest to do so, and I think the "good game bad vibes" vs "bad game good vibes" argument perfectly sums up why. I've loved every Pokémon game I've ever played, but the latest two generations of 'main' games have **really** fallen short on general production quality. The vibes have still been great imo, and I've literally (according to my Switch) spent thousands of hours playing each of those generations' games, both replaying the main story and just doing other random things (shiny hunting, competitive battling, etc.), but at the end of the day, they are more clunky and less polished than Breath of the Wild, which was *the* launch title on the Switch so the console is no excuse; and even Pokémon Let's Go and Legends: Arceus, which were also developed by Gamefreak, so the the dev team is no excuse either. I think The Pokémon Company just needs to step back for a bit and let the devs really pour their time, effort, and love for the franchise into the games for once. I really hope Palworld is the fire lit under them to finally make those changes, but I worry it might just make them panic and announce gen 10 too early to show they have yet another underdeveloped horse in the race.
@NoGoodHandlesLeft Жыл бұрын
On the topic of boss battles. Recently there was a story of this group of friends taking on a Pok- I mean Pal that was much higher level than them. It was supposed to be a boss-style challenge. They noticed that it was weak to fire so they filled the immediate area with 20 campfires and lured it around until the fire killed it. Horrible, sure, but it was inventive and the potential for that kind of out-of-the-box thinking is missing from Pokemon. The analogy to a race is a good one. Here is another; Henry Ford. When Ford created the Model-T he captured nearly 100% of the market. But he had an unhealthy love for his creation and refused to innovate even as other carmakers copied what had made Ford successful and took it even further (famously Ford stated in response to requests for new colour options that customers could have any colour car they wanted as long as it was black). Ford's current market share is around 10%. If Nintendo doesn't smarten up they will be heading in that direction because maybe Palworld won't beat them but they have demonstrated that Nintendo *can* be beat.

My feelings overlap somewhat with Luke’s. The game in general feels like a big pile of mechanics that were combined mostly because they COULD be. Some of them work shockingly well together, but some feel out of place. Like the guns, and capturing humans, and butchering, et al. In a game that was intentionally making a dark version of Pokemon, this could work rather well, like games that have taken a dark twist on classic fairy tales or children’s stories (American McGee’s Pocket Monsters, or something). But as you say, Palworld lacks that sense of self-awareness and twisted irony. Also I get the general sense they have cut too many corners with design choices - making the Pals too close to Nintendo designs is one that may turn out to be a critical error. “Video games are hard to make” but distancing your designs from one of the most notoriously litigious and influential companies on Earth really should have been a foundational design choice, not trying to see how close you can get before you get hauled into court. This isn’t some in-joke parody that will only ever see views in memes, this is a game that they are apparently really trying to make successful, and I think they could have exercised a lot more care in making sure Nintendo wouldn’t have so many beachheads from which to attack them.

@@atomicskull6405 Naturally, a user can simply avoid optional mechanics to tailor their own experience, but that doesn't stop them from creating a distracting design philosophy that feels dissonant and off-putting. It is also absolutely reasonable to critique that game for its bad voice acting even if you don't have to personally experience it. But the Pals interacting with each other, actively and happily running to your aid to help you when you're, say, building a fire, the characters feel more like characters, rather than interaction points. But at the same time, while Pokemon games have the more positive vibes in theming and such, nothing really interacts with anything in a pokemon game - things just drone around until the player shows up, at which point it's only the things the player interacts with that react in any way.

Also, like you said for "character progression," what I would like to see is something like where you unlock TM and HMs essentially through leveling your trainer, such that once you unlock these abilities, you can quickly train them into any Pokemon you have infinitely, and this would be how you unlock the ability to make them "useful" in the open world, outside of combat. So if you just catch and raise Pokemon, they do combat stuff, but if you level your trainer, you can make them useful for traversal or for clearing terrain or for other fun (non evil) uses.

The thing about Palworld as a sandbox game is that a lot of the cruelty is optional. The Pengullet Rocket launcher? You have to unlock the tech for it, then craft the equipment, and then have a Pengullet with you. If you don't do any of those steps, then you can't launch a happy little friend out of a rocket launcher. It also says something that the Pengullet rocket launcher is less effective than the actual rocket launcher you unlock by endgame, so the cruelty isn't even the most optimal way to play. Amidst all the memes, Palworld is a game that allows you to treat your pals as humanely or as inhumanely as you want, each with their own upsides and downsides, and the game will not judge you for it. You are the one who decides whether your Pals live in the height of luxury with the best working conditions, or if you run your bases like slave sweatshops.

There's a sense of wonder to the Pokemon world that no other franchise has come close to replicate. That's what makes it appealing for kids. That's why Pokemon Concierge works. It's not about the battles really, but about the charm and aesthetics. About lore and deep suspension of disbelief when you read their Pokedex entries. It's also about nostalgia. Palworld seems cool and edgy on the surface, but you can't see it becoming an interesting world because that edgyness will drive it into trying wilder and more edgier things as years pass. Look at Fortnite and PUBG. That's the kind of transformation that western games undergo when they fail to stick to their worldbuilding and everything goes to keep themselves relevant. I believe it's ok for Pokemon to stick to their original vision of what their world is and should look like, however, I believe that it's unacceptable to be one of the biggest money makers in the planet and still put out unrefined and lackluster games such as S&V. It's like they got all the right ideas, and all of them are scattered across different games and forms of media. If they made (or remade) a game that used New Snap's graphics, Arceus's approach to gameplay and mechanics, and S&V's storytelling, while implementing an expanded interaction to all pokemon (even if it meant a huge development effort), we'd be looking at a TotK-Tier kind of game. Pokemon's Achilles heel and biggest strength ironically is to play shit too safe for their own sake.

Now, too be fair, you can be as mean or as nice to your Pals as you want. I have 4 hot springs and let a few chill in the pasture. The most tasked Pals I have are making food for us all. The 2nd are the ones on defense against the syndicate. I might kidnap Pals but our home is super nice.

I am giving everybody their own little cubby/room soon. I treat it like a hotel, and tasks are spread out so everybody gets a lot of break time. it's excessive but so is longterm resource production :D TL;DR we rich now yall we can afford it

I'd like to see more videos like this, just generally chatting about games, not a review as such but just a few thoughts for what you like and don't like about them (with Andy, Jane and Mike too, whoever has played the specific game).

Remove the base building, and you get what I wanted from Legends Arceus. If all Pokemon did was added real time combat with attacks that have a set area of effect you need to aim, I would have never played Palworld.

Honestly legend Arceus had so much potential that they left it to die in dusts

My very first interaction with Palworld was wild, someone in a Discord server posted the picture with the 4 Lamballs with heavy machine guns and I thought "huh, that's a weird out-of-pocket meme" and a day or so later I opened Steam, looked at the frontpage and almost had a stroke

I don't really want a Pokemon base builder. I really like the core turn-based combat of Pokemon (even though the animations could do with being a lot shorter and the interface much smoother) I do hope this lights a fire under Nintendo to really improve their next Pokemon game, but I also hope they don't make it too much like Palworld. (also I actually kinda like the more mature tone of Palworld from what i have seen - I haven't played it mind you - and would personally like it if Pokemon took a step in that direction... but they never will)
@Potataro454 Жыл бұрын
They managed to perfectly describe my issues with both Pokemon and Palworld: "If Pokemon is like a sort of dodgy game, great vibes, Palworld is the exact opposite... Good game, horrible vibes." 6:30 I want to love Pokemon, and I want to root for Palword, but both are dancing around what I actually want to play: a fun monster collector where my monsters can be an active part of the adventure, rather than just tools to progress from Point A to Point B. Also, why guns in Palworld, why not just give them cool swords and spears and bows?

thing is, THERE IS a sword, just locked behind level 44, near end game level.

The slavery mechanic in Palworld is really the logical conclusion of what the entire concept of Pokémon is. Pokémon is essentially a universe of legal animal abuse, except for that one city that the Detective Pikachu movie takes place in. It is hilarious to spell it out loud though
@10tailedbijuu Жыл бұрын
though that is just from looking in and not having played it all one's life, animal abuse is forcing the animal to do something, the pokemon typically are fine to battle each other. it is like young lion cubs or any other young animal practicing with fighting each other.
@AJadedLizard Жыл бұрын
This is honestly a conclusion you can only really come to if you've not played any of the games.

It is clear that Luke hasn’t tried to capture a human npc in a sphere, fail, and then read the text that calls the human “Cheeky bastard!”

It's definitely one of those games where I don't know what to make of it. On one hand the fights etc seem fun, on the other hand I'm really not into basebuilding games at all.
@infern0711 Жыл бұрын
I am normally not into base builders either. I’ve bounced off of Minecraft, Valhiem, and Ark. But Palworld has kept me engaged because it’s got a lot more than just building and getting more stuff so you can build.
@nightmare62089 Жыл бұрын
I think this is the first time I haven't heard Ark mentioned as a comparison for Palworld. It is a solid game(for early access anyways from what I've played) and I personally kind of like the more grim vibe to it.

I was waiting for you to cover this honestly. It's not the greatest game but I enjoy it a lot more than pokemon.

It's not a "Pokemon killer" game but it's definitely a "Pokemon is on notice" game.

On some level I feel like "Basebuilder with collection elements" is an evolution of the Viva Pinata formula, and I'm completely here for that idea. I haven't played Palworld itself, but would definitely try a good vibes version if it came to consoles I use.

A version of the game is available as part of PC Game Pass. It's not the same version as the Steam version, so there is no cross-play, and doesn't have dedicated servers yet but it is 'free' and you can invite friends into your world.

@@SevCaswell also there are some benefits they patch the exploits first on pc so it gives you time to use them also because of last patch a lot of people basically got a free ancient technology when they swaped the pal statue and the egg incubator

Luke's #1 take of meaningful, real time combat is what I've wanted from Pokémon for years now. And they aren't strangers to the idea since they made the Pokkén game.
@SusurrusBlue Жыл бұрын
Largely agree with Luke. I love the idea of a game where my Rosalia helps me with the gardening, I ride around on a Rapidash, Machoke helps me build, and the swimming pool turns into a hot tub when my fire pokémon swim with me. Homestead poké sounds lovely. Actually, I would play a game that is just that new nexflix pokémon island vacation show. The idea of butchering my pokémon or making them work in factories or in mining chain gangs, makes me feel a little ill. For that alone I could never play Palworld. (also was that a MCC reference?, "with my power, and grandma's power, and mum power... that's all the same power")
@DjimonMoz Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, can we stop making a big deal of Palworld's depiction of using Pals for labor? Pokémon does the exact same thing, it just doesn't show it so explicitly. Or are we just gonna pretend that we haven't been using Pokémon for transportation, tree cutting, boulder moving and everything in between since Gen 1?

I think a Pal World with Digimon where you go into the Digital world and make bases with Digimon filling the world where you get armor and weapons (I would say like pew pew space guns not real ones) to help out your Digimon would be the best.

On the note of pals interacting in the world I came across a pack of the wolf like pals kill and eat another pal. Took me so by surprise I stood there doing nothing. Not something I'd want in Pokemon but interactions between mons would be amazing.

Why not though? Pokemon has referenced predators and prey throughout every generation. Why not have them hunt and fight each other?

It's just natural, it's what happens in nature, and having the Pals be PART of the nature of the world is just one of the huge improvements over Pokemon that they have made
