Awesome video. Always loved your content. Really good points and the topic of plagiarism was really fleshed out. I also agree about how on the topic of the designs Pokemon Company has no rights to claim copyright. It reminded me of that infamous Namco copyright over minigames being used in loadscreens and how they just got away with stopping and not allowing any other developer to even attempt their own spin on it. It be like that if Pokemon Company claimed all similar monster designs. But also like you put in the end of the video they are in such a different league as a money printer that this doesn't really effect them. Amazing vid feels nice to kind of get an ending to this whole Palworld drama since for a few weeks it was everywhere and so many opinions where either from Pokemon die hards or people who haven't played the game farming for engagement on Twitter.

I was also going to talk about videogame patents like the Namco one as well, but I ended up cutting the whole discussion. The point I was going to make was that video game patents effectively stop other developers from putting in good ideas and the gaming community as a whole actively scoffs at that kind of thing and recognizes it should be free for everyone to use. This actually lead me into researching video game patents as a whole and it would've gone into this whole other discussion about plagiarism, but I felt like it would've taken too long to talk about as opposed to the simple 'Doom' example.

What I find funniest about it is how people celebrate or curse the existence of Palworld as if it were some kind of real competition for Pokemon, when not only is one a new thing that came out of nowhere and the other is an IP with like 30 years behind them but also when they are games of totally different genres and that do not even share a platform.🤣 Literally, the success of Palworld does not affect Pokemon in the slightest, the only thing it affects is that it drives the most die-hard fanboys of the franchise crazy, they are literally on suicide watch for the simple fact that Palworld is an actually fun and successful game lol
@kazoorion7993
@kazoorion7993 7 ай бұрын
This is why I tell people that Palworld doesn't need to "kill" Pokemon, not only because realistically it can't, but Pokemon has already killed itself and it's now a zombie franchise and just move on from this endless debate that leads to nowhere lol At the end of the way, Pokemon fans can simply keep playing Pokemon, regardless if the newest games now brick consoles and sells 50 millions of copies in 10 hours while Palworld players waits for Pocketpair to keep up with the QoLs that makes people happy like the Ore and Pal Fluid farming.

This video turned out to be better than I expected. While I obvioulsy don't agree with the "chinese bootleg thing", I agree with a lot of stuff you said in the video like how a lot of comparation that Pokemon fans makes are flimsy at 24:40 and the nonsensical nature of Palworld, which is ironically one of the biggest reasons of why I liked it a lot, as well as what you said at 27:20 in regards of many video game studios "plagiarizing" others or even themselves. Also, I am surprized you didn't talk about the Wanted mechanic you can get by commiting crimes like attacking NPCs or getting spotted in any of the Wildlife Sanctuaries, making the PIDF officers hunt you down until you are either dead or you somehow make them lose track on you, having some similitary with the GTA series in that regard.
@HyperCharge
@HyperCharge 7 ай бұрын
I do think the game's appearance gives it a very bad first impression for a lot of people and there's really no denying that. Obviously, I don't want to stigmatize China as a whole, but Palworld does completely fit the mold for the kinds of games made with the countries' lack of regulation on foreign IP. Even though Pocketpair are based in Japan, they could've fooled me otherwise if I didn't really look into it. Again, it's all just vibes and how it's perceived. The wanted system is definitely GTA inspired, but I guess it didn't stand out to me all that much. I didn't really commit crimes at all besides going on those islands for the rare Pals, so there weren't a lot of points where I interacted with it.
@kazoorion7993
@kazoorion7993 7 ай бұрын
@@HyperCharge It's a natural reaction if you see it from an outside perspective, specially since many of it's trailers only adversites the slavery and cruelty which can turn off people from trying it out, but once you actually play it, you realise the game is more than just "haha lets enslave them all and butcher them bzzz" which can surprize people and go like "Wait, you can actually interact with your Pals in wholesome ways like patting? This wasn't adversited at all." which I actually consider it a good thing. Make sense, specially if you are one of those players that want to beat the game while avoiding to commit crimes as much as possible, despite some Pals being exclusive to those islands in the wild (since you can breed them too). Personally, I think that's something in favor on the game as you will always see people playing the game very different from you and others, as well as making it replayable, since it has more than one save file. With all the QoL Pocketpair has been giving in updates like Ore mining and fixing the bugs, I am more than happy to keep playing Palworld and hoping the devs keep going on the good path without letting the overwhelming success to make them rest on their laurels.

Tbh I think people shouldn't see a brand new monster collector game as a "competition" but as a "new adition" to the genre, specially when it rarely gets a sequel, success or not, while Pokemon get annual releases. It's like someone releases a FPS game and people say it will kill "Call of Duty" and the developers mostly don't have any intention to make their own game into a "killer".

The argument point that "pocket pair used those scam mobile games as puzzles proves they have no clue what they're doing" is a weak argument. Why do those mobile games use these puzzle games yo attract people? Because those puzzle games seem fun. The fact someone made a game based on those sort of mobile puzzle game at the very least show there is interest in that sort of thing. Now why is it bad those sort of puzzle mobile games exist? Because its a scam. Neither of those 2 facts are mutually exclusive and if anything shows theres a degree in creativeness when ripping off a lot of elements.

It's one of those situations where the person people don't like is obviously grifting, but they're technically not doing anything illegal so there's no real repercussions. Saying it's a 1-to-1 knock off is just wrong, but saying it's wholly unique isn't much better. Anyway yeah, good video. I heard about most of this stuff from one side only, so it was nice to actually be told what you did IN THE GAME for once lol.

One thing I didn't cover in the video is that it probably must feel bad as a Pokemon fan to have this incredibly incompetent game studio show up out of nowhere and one up the Pokemon series with Palworld. I feel like if Palworld was a more traditional Pokemon clone, it would've been more accepted by the Pokemon fanbase because it would pay homage and "bend the knee" to Pokemon in a way. In it's current state, it almost disrespectful in the way they added guns and slavery and all this crap, because it's basically making fun of the thing you love, while also blatantly ripping it off at the same time, and also making tons of money off that. On top of this, it also lift the veil and exposes GameFreak's overall incompetence, because if these dummys over at Pocketpair who can barely do anything right can actually put out a decent openworld Pokemon game, then GameFreak has literally no excuses! It's like getting a worse grade on the test than the dumbest kid in the classroom.

Well, the CEO of Pocketpair literally stated in an interview they aren't attempting to innovate and/or make it "unique", but giving it a try with some clear influence from other games beyond Pokemon, which was the correct decition, given how oversaturated the crafting/open world mechanic genre are nowadays. It's also important to know that days ago, Pocketpair made a statement on their Discord Server, regarding their precedents with Craftopia still being early access, despite it being released in 2020 and how they were so small that missmanagment was a very common issue with them. In that case, they have a similar trayectory with StudioMDHR, the creators of Cuphead, as the latter also started as a small indie company that had problem with managment and other stuff, which lead Cuphead to take 6 years to be released, but just like Palworld, it paid off incredibly well. As a cercain Spanish KZbinr said in his critique of Palworld, regarding it's controversy; If you buy Palworld and expect it to be a revolutionary masterpiece that puts other games to shame instead of another adition of the genre, then all you are doing is attempting to respond to the needs from other times, becoming a parody that's so big as the result of your own yearning.

19:10 Hoo boy, you should make some time and find a reading of the CEO's memoir of the game development, either as a google translate/DeepL or find someone reading it. Game engine switch from unity to unreal 5, despite everyone having no experience in unreal 5 and relying on one guy to learn to the ropes. Didn't know how to rig 3d models due to initially relying on assets from unity. He didn't once look st the cost of the game and just kept going until the funds hit 0. And so much more. It is one hell of a ride all things considered making this. They might be idiots, but they sure as hell learned quick to get the game out in a surprisingly stable state.

Because it goes against everything pokemon stands for: Innovative gameplay, optimized, multiplayer, you can freaken catch humans, hell there is even an unreleased palsphere that lets you STEAL OTHER PEOPLE'S PALS! I do think it's more of a minority within the overall Pokemon fanbase and the internet buzz is a bit overblown. You also have to remember that there are a lot of Pokemon fans who also liked Palworld (myself included) who still play all the janky modern games too, so I feel like there's A LOT more cross over in the fanbases than you might think. The point I was making at the end of the video was that both sides of this issue, whether you like or hate the modern games, are both STILL Pokemon fans. I mean, if someone actually didn't like Pokemon anymore, they would probably just play other games and not participate in the discourse entirely. Defending and playing Palworld sort of implies that you are still are invested in Pokemon and want it to be better, so it's more so an internal discussion WITHIN the Pokemon community if anything.
@Xaddgx
@Xaddgx 7 ай бұрын
@@HyperCharge Oh cool, I wasn't expecting a reply. Great video, by the way. You're absolutely right that it's a minority of people overall, since I don't believe most people are even on X/Twitter to begin with. However, it was definitely enough if The Pokemon Company themselves felt the need to acknowledge people's complaints. I don't recall if you mentioned it in the video, but one of the people that were comparing models actually faked the similarities by editing the models, which they eventually admitted to because Palworld "glorifies animal abuse." That's just ridiculously far. In addition to that, the accusations of AI were very obviously intended as a way to do PR sabotage of Palworld, to make people avoid playing it. Realistically this didn't work, but I can't really call this stuff the actions of people who want Pokemon to be better, but rather those who wish for Pokemon to have zero competition due to blind loyalty to the brand. It'd be a different discussion if there was any actual evidence to the claims, but there weren't. That being said, everything I just said only applies to the outrage squad on X/Twitter, none of my friends who play Pokemon except for one even knew about any of the perceived controversy. So sure, fair enough, I'm just angry stuff like that even gets attention.
@kazoorion7993
@kazoorion7993 7 ай бұрын
@@Xaddgx Lmao I still remember that person. To be honest, I never believed their quote unquote "proofs" of Palworld stealing Pokemon models, as aside from the Pokemon fanbase being known for spreading missinformation, that person never made a video downloading the models, comparing to them and glossing over them when they were asked for, which would only raise eyebrows to those who were exceptic. And once they got called out for lying to everyone and give that shitty excuse for doing it and run away, you know you are dealing with a lolcow. And you are absolutely right about people wanting Pokemon to have absolute zero competition. And this isn't even something that can be exclusively related to Palworld, but also can be traced back from the likes of Digimon, Spectrobes, Yokai Watch, Nexomon and even the likes of Dragon Quest and Shin Megami Tensei, despite both series coming out before Pokemon. It's like they want the monster collection genre to be exclusive to Pokemon while anything else being labeled as a "blatant rip off" no matter how different it actually is. But yeah, if Twitter didn't exist, then the "backlash" wouldn't have become overblown and the Streisand Effect that was part that lead the game to it's commercial success would have definitely been way smaller.
