This takes me back. I was an 'airline brat' dad was a mechanic for Braniff- we always got moved to first class and it was wonderful! I remember being asked 'smoking or non smoking' when selecting your seat too! I recall the china and crystal and great food and drink. Braniff had little cappucino black and white china cups that they would serve after dinner with a shot of some booze in it that was a thrill for an underage 16 yr old trying pass as a sophisticated grown up! Thanks for the video!

What a classic clip! Of course they're flying east. It wouldn't be good marketing to hear, "our cruising speed is 575mph, with a substantial headwind, making our groundspeed, 492mph."
@worldofai-games1036
@worldofai-games1036 7 жыл бұрын
No airline flies that fast anymore. Even with substantial tailwind, jets usually go 580 mph ground speed to save fuel. 600+ is for delayed flights.

Great video! I once flew on a TWA Lockheed Martin L-1011 from Las Vegas to New York City back in the eighties--it was an excellent airline at the time, with good food, service. God, I wish could've flown Pan Am. I was old enough to remember the Pan Am building and everything. It's too bad America had to fuck up air travel for everyone through deregulation and 9/11/01.

Also shown are a couple playing a serious chess game. In all my 45 years of flying I have NEVER seen anyone playing chess!! Bring back the era of classic travel!!

I live by Boeing Field in Seattle. There's an AWACS E3 Sentry there (converted 707) which has those old engines on it, I think. I've seen it take off and land several times and it's definitely the loudest thing I've ever heard. It's more of a piercing, incredible shriek than the bigger low-end that other engines produce. It's literally awesome to see that thing come in.

The reason there were no backpackers is because there were no discount fares back then. People paid full fare coach or First Class. Because the fares were high, that kept out the T-shirt/backpack crowd just like the Concorde rates did. Concorde used to cost $5400 one way, and people who spent that much dressed for the occasion. BTW, those early turbojet airliners are, IMHO, the most beautiful. The later turbofan engines looked lumpy.

Irishimp, I'm right there with you. I'm only 32, but started flying when I was young, with my parents, and we always dressed up (my dad was a commercial pilot). I still have my Pan Am First Class Cabin Bag. It's horrific the way some people will get on plane, and even worse the way airlines treat you. Gone are the Pan Am days.

A "grande dame" of the skies. I flew with them on several occasions as a kid in the 70ties.Basicly on their intercontinental workhorse 707.Once on first class from LHR to JFK.They really served the food like that and we had overhead super8 projectors for the movie. So the ad is quite accurate to the first class at that time. Economy was by far different as once flying from JFK to KIN.

Those planes were the best! They were still in operation the first time I flew in one of them to Rio in 1969. Ours was made in 1959, ultra clean, ultra roomy (however it was rumored they used short people in the ads. Since I was 6 @ the time, everything was roomy. They've managed to make the seats MUCH smaller over the years and nothing will ever be the same as it was. It was a pleasure to fly then, not anymore.

@floooky1 Now you've go me going... we flew Pan Am in 1967 overseas. It was wonderful, we had hot meals, china, menus that were so nice that we framed them! This in coach! Little bottles of lotion and mouthwash in the rest rooms, silverware. Everyone dressed and had manners. I am a housewife and love it! Used to do the modern working woman thing and was so worn out, I would much rather stay home and cook from scratch and be a mom to my kids and a homemaker! Take care!

I agree; modern society has sent such things as elegance, manners and geniality in all public spheres down the proverbial crapper. To think: there was a time when traveling meant putting on your Sunday best. Everyone acted out of Noblesse Obligé; not just for their own sake, but out of respect and courtesy to fellow travelers. Let us not forget, however, the 50's were not all class and grace. They had no shortage of shortcomings as well. I suppose progress has its price...

1959. The service, food, and general flying experience was second to none... Wish they'd ditch today's overhead bins in favor of overhead racks or nothing at all -- check the damn luggage and get the roomier interiors back. And to top it off, the 2010 passenger it seems is either wearing a ratty printed t-shirt, pajama bottoms, or flip flops. Basically the flying public today looks like a reject list from Barnum & Bailey.

Flying was reserved for the well-off on those days. A round trip ticket from L.A. to New York in 1960 on the new B707 was $1,100.00 or $11,000.00 in today's dollars.

Prior to jet service, airplanes flew much lower and were subject to weather, and also used prop engines. Jets fly above the weather at cruising altitude and the engines don't cause cabin vibration, so it was something new.

The majority of Boeing windows were (and still are) quite square, much more so then Airbus ones. The variation of the rounded edges (the part that was causing the DeH. disasters) has however changed. The planes that possess these windows are 707 (the plane featured), 717, 727, 737, 747, some 757, and older 767. The other 757s, 767s, and all 777s have more rounded windows and when the 787 finally comes out, they will look more like the round Airbus ones, only much, much, much bigger
