Both my father and brother were pilots with Pan Am, so I love watching these videos. Thanks for the memories.

What a fantastic document. Born in 1986, I am a little bit too young for having concrete memories of Pan Am. My first memories of airports and planes start in 1990, when we were visiting Berlin-Tegel and I can remember vague impressions of our first flight to the USA. Maybe it was with Pan Am, but even my mother cannot recall it anymore. At the age of five, I began to comprehend what airports and airplanes are good for. Very familliar: The high pitched sound and the loud thundering of old turbofan engines.

+Matthudson2 I saw these PANAM B727 s at several German airports on my flights with Lufthansa in the 1980s..didn t PANAM Flight 01,round-the world-B747 operate out of Frankfurt (SFO-JFK-LHR-FRA-DEL/BOM-BKK-HKG-NRT-SFO)??
@Matthudson29 жыл бұрын
+am1966ath That's possible. But I didn't start until the late 80's. By that time, Pan Am had sold the Pacific operation to United. So, Pan Am 1 no longer flew around the world when I worked there. only flights to DEL/BOM, NBO, RUH/JED I think they had a flight to JNB, but it was removed before I started.

Yes! PanAm, Air France and British Airways had traffic rights from any West- German City into Berlin, Lufthansa didn't. With the falling of the wall and the reunion of East and West Germany PanAm lost these rights. We had, starting 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. almost every hour one flight.

It must have been a heart breaking moment for the employees of PAN AM at Berlin airport & all around the world to see their organization being shutdown specially for those who spent their lifetime for PAN AM . It looked as if someone you love is dying to death slowly in front of you . It was very painful to see when when plane left & the ground staff started packing up their belongings at airport some folks PAN AM folks in London & New york really burst into tears in when they saw the last

Service to airports in Berlin could only be offered by USA, French or British (and I suppose Soviet, but they flew to SXF) carriers under the terms of the occupation of Berlin from 1945 to 1990.

@swvwest7 ай бұрын
The airplane shown was Pan Am Clipper Quick Step (Tail No. N4749). It was delivered new from Boeing to National Airlines on April 26, 1968. It was transferred to Pan Am on July 1, 1980 after Pan Am bought National. It went on to Braniff International Airlines 01/10/1992. After Braniff it was scrapped, I couldn’t find exact date of the scrapping.

My dad was a Chief Pilot for Pan Am. Before he died, and when I was old enough to understand, he told me about F'n so many hot stewardesses. He told me they were girls who wanted sex but without family and friends "back home" who could find out. It was a "swingers club" when they were at their destination. He once told me he did 3 of them in one day while in Rio.

Talk about tearful nostalgia. I might have been there. I did fly one of the last Pan Am flights from the Berlin base, that being a continuation of an over the Atlantic flight from New York to Paris, and then on to Tel Aviv, in March of 1991. When the base closed, I was transferred to JFK to fly the A-310. It all ended on 4 December, 1991 - one year, one month, one week, and one day after this FRA-TXL flight. How I do miss it. There was nothing to compare in the industry.

Milan Harmáček When they bought a “domestic” airline to do that, they strangely chose one with a hub in Miami (National). Meanwhile of the other international carriers, TWA bought Ozark which had a hub in St. Louis, and Northwest bought Republic with hubs in Memphis and Detroit.
@Bellasie16 ай бұрын
@@erik_griswold None of them exists any longer.
@Bellasie16 ай бұрын
No. It thrived as an international airline and should have remained that special, exclusively international airline that is fondly remembered. It didn't survive for other reasons. In fact, adding domestic routes was a very bad decision. Unprofitable routes, political bias in favor of its closest competitor TWA, and a horrific mid-air terrorist attack all contributed to Pan Am's demise. Had the leaders considered it important to save this airline as much as the common people, it would however still be in business.

@@Bellasie1 TWA survives as American while Northwest is now Delta. Both TWA and NWA had rights to fly international flights like PanAm had. No other carriers had the ability to do so until deregulation (not counting Canadian and Caribbean/Latin America)
