Hermes' staff is called the caduceus and was a symbol of couriers and messengers. The rod of Asclepius, a staff with a single serpent coiled around it, was the symbol for healers and physicians. These started to get conflated in the 16th century and really took hold in the U.S. when the Army Medical Corps started using the caduceus in 1902. Also, Hermes holy headgear was originally a kind of traveller's hat called a petasos with the wings added in later. I think it was the Romans that turned it into a helmet but I'm not 100% certain of that.

Romans practiced syncretism because they wanted to stay on the gods good side. It was easier to say that: “we have the same gods but just different names”, because that way they could claim to be sacrificing and having been sacrificing to them instead of just adding another set of gods to their pantheon when they conquered someone. (Their pantheon would have gotten really plotted.) Plus it created unity.
@thevoidismyhome7242

This actually makes sense, and when you consider that much of Rome's ruling stance on other cultures was "you keep doing you, just under new management", it would make sense that all they would do is say "your gods are our gods" and move on, because either way you look at it, nobody is skimping. The new culture is worshipping Rome's Gods, just under that culture's names, and the Romans are worshipping those new Gods, just under Rome's names.

@@thevoidismyhome7242 It’s an interesting chicken-and-an-egg situation. Romans were very superstitious and thus didn’t want to anger any gods. This let the beings, in a way, tolerate towards others religions thusly securing their rule. Which could be seen as gods favouring their rule. Or were they first tolerant and later explained it through superstition? (Definitely superstitious first since the started human sacrificing when a books told them to. Sibylline Books.)

Funny thing about the medicine. Hermes was not a god of medicine. The medical staff is the Staff of Asclepius which had a single snake. But someone made an error around the time of one of the World Wars and put the symbol for Messengers on the Medical gear. It stuck. But. Apollo was the god of medicine and he gave the caduceus to Hermes. So it still works! It's wild the way it came back around.

Funny enough Tolkin actually used Odin as a base for Gandalf mostly because he had a habit of appearing before people as a old man with a hat and staf. I am guessing Odin might have been linked with Mercury because both were trickster by nature as well as the underworld aspects

31:42 Odin actually had a LOT of different names, names being a Big Deal in Norse beliefs as holding power. And Tolkien, being the enormous mythology nerd he was, FLAT-OUT STOLE several, such as the names of the dwarfs. One of those names for Odin was, oddly enough, Gandalfr.

This connection between Odin and Mercury is reflected in modern language. In Spanish Wednesday is Miercoles, and in Italian and French it's something similar to Spanish. For those who don't know, Wednesday is derived from Odin's day and Miercoles is derived from Mercury.

To give more context on the English and Romance names of the dawys of the week: Originally, those names of days came from Latin, and they were named after the planets (moon and sun were counted among them). Later, when the Germanic peoples adopted Roman week, they took the Latin names, but translated it. Since the names of the planets were often taken form Roman gods, they were just replaced with the Germanic counterparts. The days and corresponding planets were: Sun - Sunday Moon - Monday (those two were more directly translated for the names of the celestial bodies, no gods involved) Mars - Tuesday Mercury - Wednesday Jupiter - Thursday Venus - Friday Saturn - Saturday (this one wasn't really translated into English)

9:11 this is a much later telling of the story. In the older one Hermes bested Arges in a fight and when he tried to flee Hermes killed him. This ties in the otherside to Hermes being the herder since like real world herders for much of history were also raiders who stole cattle and livestock of others.

Red also did a deep dive into the myth of Hades and Persephone which had me on cloud day because that is my favorite myth. Yeah I know Hades kidnapped her, but at least he shows her more respect than Zeus and Poseidon show to their own wives! And if you're going to marry one of the big three might as well go for the one with the dog in my opinion.

So Blue actually has an old video that has an incident that shows how important Herms were in Ancient Greece: Alcibiades. It's one of the older videos of his, but it did introduce us to a character that will be referenced a few times in the extended OSP fandom. (Oh, and Blue can speak at least some Greek, so he probably helped with the translation of the game of telephone in this video). As for Hades not having many negative character traits... that'll be covered in Red's video on Hades and Persephone, but pretty much, Hades is one of the youngest Greek gods we have on record. And this is not the last time you will hear about Hermes=Odin.

Well the deity of the Underworld itself, as in the place is Erubus in greek and because mineral wealth comes from the earth, he (or it) is also a deity of wealth, like Pluton. So it might be that when the Romans synchritized the deities they merged Hades (which is also the name of the place that is both the underworld and within it) and Erebus. And yes Erebus is also the primordial darkness or just darkness.

Once you head back to Blue's domain, I can only recommend "History Summarized: Alcibiades". The oracle at delphi simply tells him, "congratulations". The standard of nudity was his idea. Narcissus gets shy around him. Patroclus was his boyfriend first. He is… the most interesting man in Ancient Greece.

26:06 nope they just appear the same since they are both Indo-European deities thus sharing many similarities and themes. Also not to be an ass or anything but why would you assume that roman did not have their own original deities when literally everyone else had??

It's probably generally speaking has something to do with the Roman gods are being taught more often as basically "Roman names" or "Roman versions" of Greek gods and less the gods on their own. The fact that Romans themselves in later periods syncretized them with Greek ones even harder doesn't help.

A similar situation to Pluton is when the Latins translated the Titan Cronus (Κρόνος) and the personification and god of time "chronos"(χρόνος). "Χρόνος" literally means "time" and is pronounced with a hard "h" like the German "ch". But the Latins didn't pronounce that so they called him "Kronos" as well. So they combined them .And the confusion still continues in English...🙄(I am greek by the way and it frustrates me)
