I went through the Canal decades ago. At that time the "Mules" appeared to have been built by GE. The new Canal locks use tugboats rather than the "mules" to shepherd the ships through.

Fredag den 25 december 2020. Juldagen. Merry christmas! Hello Marshall ! Isn't there a row of cogs between the rails. That is probably needed to pull the ships all the way. I dont know the english word for cogbar? A bar with cogs. "Kuggstång" in swedish. Additionally the tracks need to be designed so the ships dont pull the locomotives down into the lock. Tomas. When my wife and I went through the Canal a few years back it was my understanding the ship uses own power to move, the mules only keep the ship in place not hit the sides of the locks gates or walls of the canal.

Thanks for sharing this. I love that they pick up electricity from the track just like model trains. The National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis has one of the original GE locos from the canal. This is the first electric cog railway I have ever seen. I assume there is a cog that locks into those notches in the middle when it climbs and descends those massive hills. For such an impressive set up it is hard to find info on .

How do they get the cable from the boat to the 'mule' when their does not appear to be enough room at the dockside for anyone to throw a line to the ship or vice versa when beside the 'mule'.?
@rond361
@rond361 6 жыл бұрын
They use a line launch gun to shoot a weighted rope to the ship, then use a windlass to pull the cable up and secure it to the ship. Then they will toss the weighted rope down to the mule to be used again.
@christopherlovelock9104
@christopherlovelock9104 6 жыл бұрын
Ah yes that fits, somehow I couldn't see a man throwing a line, as he would have to be very accurate with his aim added to the fact he had hardly any room to do it if he was beside a 'mule'. Odd question, what was the idea of the permanently mounted seat on the out side for.?

Richard van Pukkem ..... See your point, but I think they are fitted for a purpose as every 'mule' has one and they are all mounted in the same place on them.
@FrenchFigaro
@FrenchFigaro 6 жыл бұрын
Seems to me that the purpose is safety. The incline before the lock looks quite steep and even though you can see a worker doing so in the video, it doesn't seem extremely safe to stand on the forward platform when the loco climbs as there is nothing to lean on (the bonnet isn't that high) and even though you can hold on tight to the forward guard rail, accidents do happen.

The ships engines power it through the locks. The electric mules are used to steady the ship while going into & out of the locks. They don't want the ship to hit the sides of the locks.

Those cables running sideways from the loco would exert a huge sideways pull. I was wondering that they don't tend to pull it off the rails -- but probably, the thick middle rail has a cross-section that dovetails with a sliding part on the engine that anchors it to the rail.
@noosebrother
@noosebrother 4 жыл бұрын
for what i could find on the internet, it is indeed stuck to the middle racked rail. i thought it had a counter wheel on the land side like a rollercoaster but that's just the electrical hook up. so they could potentially end up in the lock.. but i seen a video of one getting flattened by a ship and not even derailing so they are built tough.

Now I understand why the new locks are so much more efficient: The cog trains all return empty after each escort through the lock, the new system has tug boats escort the next ship back down the locks after escorting one up. No wasted trip like these loooong sloooow empty returns.

@zhopka77
@zhopka77 6 жыл бұрын
Trail Work Just because you don't see a big cloud of exhaust doesn't mean they aren't diesel. Perhaps they are pretty clean as far as emissions go. Or perhaps the camera is just too far away to catch a tiny puff of exhaust. Just look at some videos of diesel trains, and you'll see what I mean. A diesel train passes right by my apartment twice every Wednesday, and I always go out to watch it. The only time I ever see any exhaust is on particularly cold mornings. Also, why would they have all those vents all over the side, if not to vent heat from a combustion engine?
@12vgs8606
@12vgs8606 6 жыл бұрын
I was in the visitor center and I did not smell any diesel exhaust. I was also inside the lock on a boat and was quite close to those mules and did not smell any exhaust or heard diesel clatter. But if those mules are electric, it would have been heavily promoted by the Panama Canal Authority. So I don't know.
@alanj9391

They are electric, and there is a third rail - it's difficult to see in the video, but it's on the landward side of the tracks, recessed under protective shields. You can see the two power pick-ups next to the wheels.

The ships are JUST FLOATING and there are these "MULE" locomotives, two on each side of the canal to balance the PULL forces that keep the ship CENTERED within the canal...... The locomotives are well synchronized in their action ! I just went through the canal a year ago February.. amazing
