Hi All, I must have seen 10 or so sailing videos of sailing boats going through the Panama Canal. But yours is, without doubt, the best I have seen. How you captured the excitement, the views and allowing Adrian to move about the boat, helping and taking photos and living the experience was just great. I'm sure most kids would have loved to have been in his shoes. I have been binge watching your videos from the beginning, 3 a day, and am about to catch up in real release time. Everywhere you guys go I have felt not only a part of the 'on-shore' crew but feel privileged to have seen so much of the world through your eyes. I think you have the balance between speech and view about right. Thank you so much, David

This is just about as inspiring as a travel proposal can be. The reason I became a travel blogger was because I never stopped dreaming. Excerpts about traveling like this one help us to remember how travel makes us humble and life experiences are more important than physical “things.” The older I get, the more I value experiences over things. I think this short travel excerpt really hits the nail on the head......thanks for sharing this amazing experience!!!!

@Expedition_Tranquilo2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Evan is an experienced sailor from Greece by way of Sydney who's joining us across the Pacific, Dean is an old friend from Sydney who wanted to do the Panama canal with us and then sail with us to Galapagos, and Mollie we became good friends with in Panama who offered to help with the lines in the canal, to get experience for when she takes her boat through.

Curious, question, why did you attach to the other sailboat while in the canal? Are you required to do so between various smaller vessels ?
@Expedition_Tranquilo2 жыл бұрын
Good question, and yes it is a requirement for small vessels. It means there's more space for a cargo ship, you need fewer linespeople per boat, with all the swirling waters you get thrown around less due to increased inertia. Ultimately we're just a nuisance for them. Apart from doing it to help us out, they'd rather just do the commercial ships and so they group us all together to minimise the hassle.

Who is in charge of driving the boats in the canal, Tranquilo only, or does the other boat share motoring and steering?
@Expedition_Tranquilo2 жыл бұрын
The largest boat is motoring and handling the majority of the steering. Heading into the Canal going up the locks on the first day was Tranquilo, the next day heading down the locks was the cat Adele. The other yachts help with steering coordinated by the pilots, and their engines are idling in case anything happens.

That line handling business and a guide/advisor on board is just ridiculous bs business. Any person with a half a brain will and can navigate through those locks without any problem on their own. Cashing out boats, as much as you can...sad. They don't on purpose have the inside canal attachment points where you can easily manage the lines yourself
@Expedition_Tranquilo2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, you're wrong. You need guidance and coordination between the yachts, and you need someone who has clear authority. Otherwise skippers being skippers, each one of us would have a different opinion. In fact the skipper on the small yacht did and asked us to ignore the advisor. Drew on Adele and us firmly said no, we are going to abide by the guidance of the pilot. Imagine if we didn't have the guide.
@smulismuli79762 жыл бұрын
@@Expedition_Tranquilo Don't agree at all, but we all have our different opinions. I grew up in boats and around boat building and that circus just looks ridiculous e.g. to employ people and make money rather than just simplify things and let captains do their job (yes I'm from Scandinavia and we don't like much nonsense). I do understand those trolley locomotives for big boats that hardly fit in the canal but smaller boats having pilots is a joke. They have line handlers walking along because they didn't equip the inside walls to to handle the lines by boaters.
@woolyimage2 жыл бұрын
@@smulismuli7976 I have transited the Panama canal several times on commercial ships as deck officer and now have my own yacht. Whether you agree or not, pilotage is compulsory for ALL vessels transiting the Panama canal as it's a critical commercial waterway. In such places commercial requirements take precedence. It is also one of the very very few places in the world where the pilot actually assumes full control and responsibility for the vessel they are on, where in most places he/she is only there to provide advice, with the master or skipper retaining overall control and responsibility. The charge for a medium sized yacht to transit i believe is around a few thousand dollars, the final cost depending if you use an agent. When you consider the amount of infrastructure they have to upkeep and the alternatives to get to the pacific ie the Northwest passage or the round the horn it seems reasonable. Mr google can no doubt provide you with more information. Just a final note, going through the canal is a fantastic experience and i would imagine even more so on a yacht.
