The world famous Panama Canal stretches over about 82 km to provide large ships faster access between the Pacific and Atlantic ocean. The canal has so much history, going all the way back to the first proposal in the 16th century up until today with the renewal and expansion project of the canal. USA took over and finalised the canal with the advantages of having all rights to the canal up until 1977, and continued being jointly controlled by USA and Panama, up until 1999.
Miraflores locks is placed just outside of Panama City, and is the most visited place to see the canal, and how the ships come in and out of it. There are two locks, working with different chambers, to lift ships up and down from the canal. The first version of these locks were built in 1914, which was the same time as the canal was completed by the USA.
The visitors center at the Miraflores locks has a great platform from which the action of the locks and the entrance to the canal can be seen. Normally an exhibition will display a lot of history, as well as an IMAX cinema, which will show a 3D movie about the canal - however, these are currently under renovation. There is a guide explaining the process and answering questions at the platform being very interesting and informative.
