LaLonde did not, as stated by the reporter, "go the distance" with Sugar Ray Leonard. He was knocked senseless by Leonard in the ninth round. He had a nice right hand but, other than that, he simply wasn't skilled in a world-class sort of way.

@@charlescarter2072 I would have to agree up to a point. I should qualify my statement by suggesting that LaLonde was not a top tier fighter in the sense of the greats of the time. He wasn't nearly as skilled as Leonard or Hearns or Duran or Hagler or Benitez or Spinks or Marvin Johnson or Eddie Muhammed; any of those guys would have taken him out. Sugar Ray was having fun with the novelty of a of moving up to an un-natural light heavyweight becauuse Great White Hopes usually generated more attention than they deserve (Gerry Quarry, Gerry Cooney . Once Leonard got knocked down being lazy, he solved the math problem and figured out what he was dealing with,.He actually could have ended the fight sooner. Leonard had already retired three times by this fight so Donny was in the ring with about 85% of "full Ray Leonard"
