Regarding filter caps and going up in value: The only time I have seen this be a problem is if you have multiple power rails and you go high enough that one rail drops slower than the rest when the power is removed. This can kill some older logic that requires multiple supplies. 4116 DRAM chips are notorious for failing because of this. Adding a bleeder resistor isn't a bad idea if you're beefing up the filters.

These have a very nice and unique analog filter that is able to remove some VHS tape noise when digitizing. It can be turned on/off from the menus (don't remember where since I haven't used mine in a while...) That filter is still unparalleled in many pro/semi pro preservation service providers opinion (just take a look on videohelp.com, a very old site that's frequented by some of them). It's the same filter that's on the ES10 and probably some others of the same date/range. Some of those guys providing the digitizing service buy ES10s and others just for that filter... Out of curiosity, I repaired a DMR EH60 (practically same machine except for firewire output and bigger HDD) about 3 years ago that, as yours, wouldn't turn up. Without knowing cr*p about it I just opened it up to take a peek and noticed a bulging cap, probably same area as the one on this video. Just replacing that cap solved the problem. I'm now tempted to go and change the other Elnas, though I don't know if I'll have the patience.... :) Cheers

Here in NZ at least somewhat newer Panasonic HD DVRs(like DMR-XW390,XW440) still have analog av inputs(and sometimes DV in), the conversion quality from VHS seems similar to older HDD/DVD recorders. They have DVD writers, but the videos can also be copied from the HDD across the network to a PC, because of the DLNA feature - it's a bit slow, but not too bad.

Also having a built in vcr to a dvd recorder is for the win because if you have even one vhs tape it is easy to put it in the machine an simply have it with the ability to watch, not to mention also for videogames and stuff to be able to plug it in with no non hdmi hookups on a tv since the often when brand new no longer typically tend to have the right hookups.. or anything analog av etc

Can you please answer this question about Panasonic DMR-EH50? Q: The last weekend, I got my father's old EH50. I plugged the following cables; audio left (between DVD audio left out and TV audio left in), audio right (between DVD audio right out and TV audio right in), video (between DVD video out and TV video in), and of course the power cable. My TV is 32'' T4305 Samsung Smart-TV (2020). Everytime I play DVD (RW or Video), I see the video but I can't hear anything. What went wrong? Did I forget to plug some cables, or did I plug the audio cables incorrectly?

I still have my E80H though it's retired. I got a Pioneer DVR-640H-K and a DVR-650H-K for next to nothing a couple years back. I use those all the time. Wish I could get a 660 to round out the collection. I had quite a few recorders in the day, depending on what I was using them for...Liteons to circumvent macrovision, Panasonics to smooth out video and the Pioneers for LPCM recording. On a side note, did you ever get around to making a video on getting Beta decks to track finicky tapes as you did with the one using a VHS deck? I acquired an old Tek scope recently but I have to figure out how to use it again. Did you ever get better with using the digital model you bought? Also, in your opinion, what were some of the best Betamaxes ever made? Several people I know went out and bought SL-HF2100s that were rebuilt units. They have autotracking but I always wonder why Sony only put it on the one deck. Also looking to replace the Panasonic AG-1980P SVHS deck with a DVHS deck but don't know what models are the best. Recommendations? Great vids as always...
@12voltvids4 жыл бұрын
The digital scope I bought is a piece of shit. It will not measure analog video signals at all. It is not about getting better at using it. The model I was duped into buying from Lee's electronics does not have the capability and I found this out about 30 minutes after I plugged it in, but all sales final there. There are 2 models of what looks like an identical scope. One will measure analog video no problem as it will lock onto the sync pulse but this one will not.
@12voltvids4 жыл бұрын
Digital tracking is snake oil. An analog tracking control is always better. Digital tracking is set by the rf level and on poor tapes the level is low so the machine just hunts. The best beta deck that Sony produced was the slhf1000 or 3000 for japan. As to dvhs I do not have an opinion as i never went down that road. I had moved onto hdv by that time and never looked back. I never used VHS personally, just as a distribution format. I was a very early adopter of NLE and used digital 8 as a mastering format and then to hdv as soon as hd became available.
@hawleygriffon92904 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for the quick reply. I got my SL-HF750 repaired down in Toronto as the last repair place in town could not fix it. But I still have a bunch of tapes that simply won't track in it (mostly Japanese X-3 speed recordings). Maybe an adjustment of the tape path like you did with that VHS deck could fix that. Not on my 750 though. Maybe the 860D I hardly ever use. I'll have to show your comment to the people who bought the 2100s. Should be interesting. The Panasonic SVHS is flaky in that it sometimes plays tapes perfectly but will just stop for no reason in the middle of playback or else not accept the tape at all. That's why I'm in the market for something that will work for me.

Is the processor under that hot spot on the board or is that just a regulator? I thought the smaller green board at the front was the entire digital section. Regarding commercial skip, my PC (with CableCARD tuners) scans finished recordings for commercials and makes an edit list. One of the big reasons I don't want to ever have to rent a DVR from a cable company. Very few channels actually apply the copy-once/copy-never flags, so I own the recordings I make forever.
@12voltvids4 жыл бұрын
I didn't pull the board but from the size of it, it appears to be a CPU. Since I don't have a manual I can't tell you what the green board is. Could be video compression, or memory for buffer. Don't know, don't care. This is a power supply problem and that is what I worked on.

Not 12V but I have used Elna caps in many repairs with good results. The Silmic audio caps seem to be well made and last a long time. It worked before the power went down. Didn't come back on. Been down a few months. I better fix it before the lithium cell dies because if it dies I lose everything on hard drive. When I was working on it I unplugged the hdd connector to get at the DVD drive to replace a belt.
