Well since we all know there's no such thing as magic...than I'm supposing Sony will still be making the best looking video. I know this is a GH5 fan-base. But the micro 4/3 sensor is a joke. Sony's A7rIII or A7III video blows GH5 out of the water. But then feel free to live in denial. But I am rooting for Panasonic's full frame camera to be good only because that will force Sony to do even better.

One thing that's missing right now in the partnership between Panasonic and Olympus. Is the ability for one manufacturer's body to coordinate with the image stabilization of the other manufacturer's lenses. If Leica, Panasonic, and Olympus where to get together with a lens mount and a standard lens image stabilization methodology. That would be very interesting.

i think if you're a serious film maker and you aren't doing lots of run and gun, the black magic pocket cinema camera is perfect.. considering the battery like on the black magic, i dont imagine people will be taking it out of the studio very often (it's around 45 mins) but the S cameras are more conventional mirrorless cameras you can take anywhere!

Panasonic had a roadmap of creating a 8K camera for the next winter Olympics. Since 8K means 33~35MPixels, Panasonic HAD to switch to FF since it's impossible to create a serious m43 sensor with such a high density.

I'd be excited if pani' made a crop sensor first. JVC have a quirky design - a camcorder boasting a 4/3 mount with an internal 35mm sensor. That'd be a great way to go for Panasonic and still use their great selection of lenses.

The Panasonic G9 is an excellent camera. Panasonic clearly listened to photographers. If you go down the list of the things that people wanted the Canon 6D Mark II to have. The Panasonic G9 has them all. Except for sensor size. So. Imagine you make the sensor full frame. And you take the best of the G9 and the best of the GH5. Would be a very interesting camera.

What i loved about Panasonic (tried only once gh4) was easy menu, great build quality. I am canon user but not heavily invested at all so if Panasonic comes to the game I'll consider it. EosR does not look promising and I am not to sure about Nikon Z.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 6 жыл бұрын
yeah better to wait and see what panasonic brings out this month... i'm really disappointed in canon with the eos r, although the nikon z was actually ok (weird card selection though). it seems like canon is still preventing their lower end mirrorless/dslrs from cannibalizing their high end cinema cameras.. when in fact they're being eaten alive by sony..... and hopefully soon, panasonic!

Imho the only way to separate in the market would be to have a larger sensor than full frame. And when I remember correctly the rumour said it more exciting than Nikon... So a open mount mirrorless camera system. That would be a revolution. And it would be the right direction in my opinion.

I'd like to see them join the Fuji G-mount. A consortium could drive 44mmx33mm sensor costs down via volume, and leapfrog FF wars. However, it seems more likely that Panasonic would ally with Leica given their existing symbiosis.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 6 жыл бұрын
wouldn't that be amazing?? but even with panasonic on board with medium format i think it's still going to be super expensive.. i remember reading a long time ago that the cost to make larger sensors is something like exponential rather than linear, but we can hope! it's probably gonna be full frame though lol

The problem with all of these new FF systems is always the native lenses. Sony has a load now as its been in the business for years. You can adapt but you might lose focus speed or accuracy. Be interesting to see what Panasonic take on the issue is.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 6 жыл бұрын
yeah they definitely have a lot of catching up to do... one more thing i'm interested in is the quality of lenses they're gonna make.. panasonic and olympus make great lenses for m43.. but would be interesting to see direct competitors to canon's L glass and Sony's G master lenses.. just wonder if they can match that level of quality on a bigger mount!
@veganbodybuilding
@veganbodybuilding 6 жыл бұрын
If you get 8K, improve the autofocus and give us an adaptor so we can use our old Panasonic/Olympus lenses...then they'll get my cash. My G9 is good, very good, but low light is always an issue. I would concurrently have the M43 and FF lenses (as portability is mainly down to lens, not camera body size). I would certainly invest in native FF lenses, so they'd have twice my custom...however it depends on the product? I'd need to see a lot more before I could decide on this product. I would prefer an open source lens mount (like M43) get a few companies onboard to really speed lens development. I am already happy with the colour science and stuff. Ibis would be important for me as I mainly shoot stills and only some video, they could do a GH5S equivalent if they want to make a non-ibis type camera later but the first should have all the bells and whistles onboard (in my opinion). That is my initial thoughts on it?
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 6 жыл бұрын
yeah i think the whole m43 and full frame could actually work together, there are rumors about an adapter panasonic is working on.. obviously you're going to be cropping a lot when you use m43 lenses on the ff bodies, but sony has the ff and apsc modes on their cameras too.. would be interesting to see if panasonic does the same. also, just please give us IBIS- can not live without it anymore!
@bskbo01
@bskbo01 6 жыл бұрын
The reason the Panasonic camera's are so big, is because of heat dissipation. Their cameras don't overheat when shooting 4K. And the GH5 doesn't have a record limit time. That's only possible because of the big camera size. If they put a full frame sensor in the same size, they are going to have a problem with both IBIS and heat dissipation. So I'm really wondering what makes them move to full frame. I hope it doesn't mean the end of M43 for them.
@teodoreh
@teodoreh 6 жыл бұрын
8K that's what forces them to use bigger sensor.
@stanleykubrick2296
@stanleykubrick2296 6 жыл бұрын
What makes them move to full frame? Maybe they're tired of looking at crappy low-light video? Go play with the sony a7sII in low light and then you will understand. And any moment now we will be getting the a7sIII, which will destroy the competition. As far as being clean in low light.
@bskbo01
@bskbo01 6 жыл бұрын
Nah. I think Teodore is right. Shooting in low light is quite niche. I don't think getting better video in low light is the main reason for Panasonic to go full frame.

I think the full frame mirrorless cameras (DSLMs) will speed up the weening of people off of DSLRs so the first thing that will happen is that DSLRs will go extinct. The migration to MFT will continue and eventually will dominate but some full frame DSLMs may be around for a long time. Full frame will always be able to take better pictures but they are both so fantastic you wouldn't notice for 99.9% of the time. Who wants to lug around all that mass when you don't have to?

Kim, thanks for a very interesting and thought provoking video. If this rumor is true, then it just means that Panasonic is jumping on the FF MILC bandwagon, like Canon and Nikon have done. It actually makes sense for them to do so, since Sony has had a virtual monopoly in FF MILC (disregarding the few Leica SL owners) for over five years now. The industry is full of competition in every segment except this one, so this is the only low hanging fruit left for Panasonic. It actually makes sense on several levels. Panasonic could now leverage their video expertise with a full frame camera, creating something like a modular Red Video camera at one tenth the price. M4/3 is pretty mature so there isn't much need for many new cameras and lenses, and this would provide a growth opportunity for Panasonic. And if the part about them using a Leica SL mount is true, then Panasonic gains a huge opportunity to sell their lenses to Leica owners. And remember, these are people who think $2,000 lenses are bargain priced. It gets even more interesting if Olympus follows suit, in effect maintaining their dual standards but with a second and much larger sensor. But I have a gut feeling that the rumored Olympus "extremely high end camera" will probably be an EM1 II successor on steroids. Perhaps with a new four thirds sensor bumped up to 26 MP or something like that. Or maybe even a usable hand held high resolution mode. M4/3 or APSC DSLRs aren't going away any time soon. Not in our lifetimes. The manufacturers are just racing to higher margin products, which is a smart move as the market shrinks. They know they won't be selling more units, or perhaps not even the same number of units in the future, so they will seek profitability through higher end goods. This is the same strategy employed by BMW, Rolex, and even Leica. Not one of which even holds a 1% market share in their respective industries.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 6 жыл бұрын
Marty4650 yeah the camera market is shrinking so I guess you have to make money however you can make it... times are hard for them but I guess the consumer wins in the end! Also, if they do get 8k, we have to see if it can replicate red at a fraction of the cost!!

Don't understand why the narrative in the West is that m43 is dying or dead. It's alive and well as Olympus is overall the best selling mirrorless cameras in their home turf of Japan for the last few years bar one year. Plus most of the major companies such Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm maintain two lines of sensors (medium format and APS-C for Fuji & full frame and APS for the other three). Full frame and m43 makes a lot of sense and would put Panasonic in a much better position than say Canon, Nikon and Sony. They're basically pursuing what Fujifilm is doing by skipping over one sensor (APS-C in this case) to offer two distinct lines of cameras. Also the upcoming Olympus flagship apparently will be a m43 so it will be interesting to see what innovations they could put out. Olympus could opt to join in with Panasonic just as they partnered with Panasonic for m43. I wish more companies had such an open format that doesn't require an adaptor. Though the industry continues to shrink and is projected to do so. Samsung already pulled out and Pentax doesn't look like it's going to hold on much longer. Olympus might eschew full frame and continue with m43 as it still makes them money. After all, m43 is really what 90% of photographers ever really need.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 6 жыл бұрын
yeah and i agree to an extent, but i think the a73 really changed a lot of things... I think the first trend to pay attention to is that the market is shrinking as you said. and the second trend is that the market is becoming more focused on high end cameras rather than consumer/enthusiast level cameras which have been cannibalized by smartphones. yes, there are still markets like Japan like you said, where m43 is strong, but i think those are more outliers than the rule. Which puts premium offerings like the GH5 and em1ii in awkward positions priced at nearly 2k, almost the same price as the a73... So from the perspective of panasonic and olympus, 1. they have to continue to make products in the coming years to keep their business alive, and 2. they have to respond to the competition. regarding point 1, they need to respond to the trend of the market being geared toward more pro users, and for point 2, the reality is that bigger sensor sized cameras with astonishing features are priced nearly the same, and they need to respond to that. so no, i don't think m43 is dead and i think they'll keep it for as long as enthusiasts and pros looking for smaller bodies continue to buy it.. but to respond to the trend of the market becoming more geared towards pros and the a73's faetures + price, panasonic and olympus have a bit of reshuffling to keep up. very happy that both companies haven't thrown in the towel though! also, not gonna ditch m43 tho, i love the tiny lenses they have!
@kevinkim271

I think there's too much stock put into catering to professionals who are the minority of the market and in the camera divisions of these companies to begin with. Sony's latest offerings have forced long time veterans such as Canon and Nikon to finally respond continuing on what Panasonic partnered with Olympus did 10 years ago by introducing the first mirrorless camera. The market in Japan is relevant because all the major camera manufacturer are Japanese with the exception of Leica and Hasselblad who have a small share of the market to begin with. Therefore they act accordingly to the shifts in their home markets which in turn affects their markets abroad. Also a majority of them aren't merely just camera companies anymore and has diversified into other fields (sorry Pentax). They could easily exit the camera business and survive. In fact, some of them would be cutting losses by doing so just like Samsung did. The camera division for most doesn't even account for most of their income such as in the case of Sony and others where imaging isn't even in their top three (that would be gaming, financial services and home entertainment). Canon has realized this for years and has diversified into other sectors such as printers and scanners. Panasonic is a major electronics manufacturer and has quite the diversified portfolio. Olympus is the leading figure when it comes to optics and makes their money by sales of endoscopes and other medical equipment. Fujifilm is in all sorts of things from cosmetics to imaging etc. Also why they are staying out full frame and is investing research and development into medium format to cater to professional photographers because that segment of the market isn't as crowded (Hasselblad hardly counts as a competitor). You have Sony, Nikon, Canon and Panasonic trying to duke it out in full frame in a shrinking market. Smartphones continue have cannibalized the point and shoot market and have been creeping up on the consumer segment. So these companies are battling it out for a piece of the shrinking pie. Plus investing the huge amount of capital needed to do the research and development to cater the the smallest segment of the market (professionals) won't keep the camera divisions of these companies afloat. What drives R&D is to keep ahead of smartphones and justify why there still needs to be a consumer market. In the case of Olympus, their best selling camera that is behind their sales isn't the OM-D but rather the more consumer geared Pen series. I have not seen the sales for other companies but I wouldn't be surprised if the bulk of their sales were the low to middle tier cameras. Yes the professional offerings do sell out but those profits are thin as they priced low or competitively to sell such as in the case of the A7III. Yet recoup their earnings by the sales of lens priced much higher. While Sony has done a lot right, the prices of buying into their system is steep after purchasing the camera. While Sony may convinced some professionals to switch, a vast majority of them are still with Canon and Nikon. Nikon and Canon finally introduced their own mirrorless full frame offerings simply to stop anyone else from switching over. The Nikon Z and Canon EOS R are priced well over the A7III and can't even match up to the specs of the Sony's 2k entry level full frame mirrorless. Yet according to Nikon the Z is pretty much backordered and the Canon EOS R will sell to the majority that remained with Canon until now. Fujifilm's XT-3 is the leading APS-C camera. So the balls in Sony's court and they have to respond. Continuing paying the price of being the lead R&D to keep ahead of the curve even though the chances of increasing your market share is slim? Continue to ignore APS-C or actually answer the X-T3's challenge. Now you have Panasonic joining the frey and has since built a reputation for being the go to camera for video. I don't know where the industry will go from here but with so many options it could only benefit the consumer.

Over the years I've had several Panasonic cameras. They are usually pretty good but I've never been totally pleased with the image quality. I do think there is room for Panasonic to jump into the full frame mirrorless market. Both Canon and Nikon seem like they aren't willing to go all the way with their new mirrorless cameras. Both are a bit crippled. I suspect it is because they feel the need to protect their margins on their DSLR lines. Panasonic doesn't have that problem. Panasonic could jump in and immediately begin to compete with the best which is still Sony. Together both Panasonic and Sony could make things quite difficult for Canon and Nikon. I'd like to see Panasonic hit a couple of the Sony weaknesses like a fully articulated LCD panel, and a better 5-axis IBIS. Any area where Sony hasn't yet responded, and matching other Sony A7III specs and capabilities. This way Both Sony and Panasonic would be battling for first place while Canon and Nikon are left scratching their heads as their DSLR markets shrink and their mirrorless cameras aren't good enough.

A7III reference and a image of the A7rIII? 😂I guess you are more upset and confused that me about the announcement. I have serious mixed feelings about Panasonic going FF.

Ha ha you are going over everything I was thinking about when I heard about this as well. I love MFT and will always keep it for the size and weight. But my dream FF camera would have to be a gh5 body with Canon or Sonys auto focus and a full frame sensor. So I am starting to get worried that the almost 10 grand I have in sony will slowly have to start getting sold off once Panasonic come out with this camera. lol. Oh well if it is true it will take a few years till the lens lineup is full and they work out any kinks in the system. But Canons new rumors and spec's are looking really good as well. So it is going to be an amazing year for the camera options and a really bad year for my wallet and my wife and my relationship.

lol about the wallet and wife haha.. but so true i still think Sony has quite a big edge if panasonic goes through with this. Obviously sony has the lenses, and they're really good (albeit expensive), and their AF is so good! But as we've seen with panasonic in the past, they innovate just as much as any company so taking on sony (and nikon and canon now) will be great to live through! my wallet is also gonna have a bad year!

Personally I sold my Sony A7RIII because of it's too many breakdowns and I'm happy with my GX8. I understood that I don't need a FF camera to make pictures that suit me. The rest is a question of marketing, whose job is to sell dreams ("you CAN'T take good pictures without a FF". "FF is happiness") or a problem of ego ("Did you see my 5000$ camera ?? Look how much I'm good !").

yeah it can certainly be like that and i agree FF is overrated sometimes, but being able to go up to 25k ISO and up is undeniable on newer ff sensors

Honestly panasonic camera are boring imo. Bland/ plain looking etc. Olympus on the other hand is where I like too look for fun innovations etc. I'm pretty sure the rumoured high end olympus camera will be full frame and that will be awesome. Imagine a em1 mk 3 full frame, that will be sick !

that would be kind of cool! i can't argue with olympus build quality in both lenses and bodies. but don't count out panasonic cameras just because they are really plain and boring on the outside- their cameras are so usable and feature rich with great menus! but yeah.. can be boring :p
