+Justin Reves yes I'm having issues with the focus specially on small objects but you gave us some good tips. KZbin is built on HOW-TO videos. Specially simple easy to understand how to videos. Keep it up this is a long battle.

Same! I've watched over 20 hours of G7 content. Tony and Chelsea Northrup just did a vlogging video and intentionally omitted the G7 despite being one of the top tier choices in my opinion, just because it doesn't have a headphone jack to monitor sound. Does anyone really monitor their own audio while vlogging?

I certainly don't. That would look silly.

Great vid thanks! For me, the issues with focus aren’t the time to acquire, but the fact that it continues to ‘hunt’ even when it’s already focussed - seems to do this randomly at times, then almost always when something happens e.g. I do a hand gesture closer to the camera. I will try the single point option thanks, I haven’t tried that so far.

Thanks, Justin. I'm getting into "how-to" type videos (I work with carbon fiber), and recently invested in two g7 bodies. My idea was to have a nice wide angle lens for the expo part, then a tighter one for when I'm focusing on the work itself. Knowing very little about how to make all this work, this video was invaluable. Thanks again, this video probably saved me weeks of time - and I say that having invested the effort to print and read the entire advanced user manual.

Thank you so much for this series on the G7, out of all the vlogs Ive gone through yours have been the most helpful. I have been wanting to upgrade what I use for a while for a number of reasons, I currently switch between smart phone, compact camera and camcorder which is a giant pain and none of those give me the video or audio quality that I would like in my vlogs. just purchased the G7 and cant wait to give my vlogs a lift! Thank you!

Great tutorial. I would have never thought about single dot focus. The middle point is a cross type so it will find vertical and horizontal lines or focus points, where as most other points are horizontal only. Super thorough and there really isn't another video like this out there! Kudos
@qwazyd0gg8 жыл бұрын
Also, why not record in MP4? It should yield less compression than AVCHD and produce better results in premiere.
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
I'm now going to use you for all my really technical questions. Vertical and horizontal - that's what cross-type means! Now I know.
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
The G7 does not do 24fps with MP4 at 1080p - only 30fps or 60fps. But it does do 24fps at 4K in MP4. I can't wrap my head around why they did it that way. I'd love to start shooting everything in 4K because the quality is better, but it's just the extra edit and render time is too much when I'm pushing out so much video. Maybe after a big computer upgrade.
@qwazyd0gg8 жыл бұрын
+Justin Reves Ahhh ok, that makes sense. For me, I record everything in 4K for the bitrate increase but always drop it into a 1080p timeline at 50% scale so it's the size of 1080p, but slightly sharper and gives a ton more room for focus cropping and edits. I haven't noticed an increase in render times doing this since it's still exporting at 1080p.
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
Hmm...I'll have to try and see what render times look at exporting at 1080p with 4K footage. I feel like it's longer, but it's been a while since I tried. Next VLOG it is! I love how sharp the 4K footage is even when rendered down.

When shooting in aperture priority (say at 30 fps) does the camera auto set your shutter to 60? Just curious.
@JustinReves5 жыл бұрын
No, when you're in aperture priority, you're telling the camera you care more about aperture than shutter speed so it will have to change the shutter speed to adjust for the light if it's too bright or too dark.

Do you think it's worth splashing out on the RX100 V for the convenience when vlogging outdoors, or just using this considering I have the same setup already (using kit lens)? Subscribed by the way!
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
The problem with the RX100 V is the audio - wind noise kills those onboard microphones and you can't add an external mic.
@Forflies7 жыл бұрын
Justin Reves Yeah it seems like an annoying issue :/. I'd definitely add some windscreens on there to help but even then mic quality isn't great. Honestly though the idea of lugging around my GorrilaPods all day outside seems pretty awkward so i think a pocket sized point and shoot would be much more convenient.

Thanks so much for doing this video - I literally couldn't find a tutorial that explained the auto focus like yours did. Are you able to do a more extensive video on using the camera? I find which is very annoying that the moment you press record the zoom punches in somewhat? Are you able to do a longer video? Thanks in advance.
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Cheryl. I might do something like that on the new G85 but 98% of it would be similar. Are you recording video from the video mode on the top or from one of the photo modes? Especially if you're recording in 4K, the size of the video is different and/or smaller than what a photo would be. So if you're in a photo mode, the screen will show you what a photo would look like, but if you switch over to the video mode, you'll see what you'll actually record.
@CherylChats8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure - I press the button on the top right hand corner of the camera . I'm really struggling to use it and it's making me not want to do my videos because I'm just not getting what I want from it - there's little tutorials online about it and the autofocus is horrendous - all my videos go in and out of focus although I'm now going to try your recommendations from this video so thank you.

Unfortunately the G7 just has a bad focusing system compared to a lot of other cameras. These tips give it about as good a chance as it can get. Single point. AF-F or AF-C and then try and give it it something with a lot of contrast to lock onto.

Hi Justin, really enjoyed your videos, just a question: if my shutter is at 50 (shooting at 24fps X 2), after I set g85 to aperture priority mode, is shutter speed still at 50? or the camera changes shutter itself? thank you!
@JustinReves6 жыл бұрын
The camera will change the shutter. Now, it will keep it at 1/50 until either it’s too bright and it has to turn it up or if the ISO gets too high, it can turn it below all the way down to 1/25.
@mangesh24585 жыл бұрын
@@JustinReves Great video! I use Shutter-priority so the shutter stays constant. This way the exposure modifies the aperture and ISO.

I have this camera and one of the main things that confused me was MP4 or AVCHD most ppl said MP4 cause you'd need a program to render it out as MP4 if you didn't have a program to do so but now that you have touched on it and the really only person i have to touch on it i might try it out on AVCHD and try it on 24fps instead of the MP4 60fps in 1080p
@JustinReves6 жыл бұрын
You get almost 2.5X more light into the camera at 24fps than at 60fps and it gives it more of a film look. You just need some kind of editing program for AVCHD but I think even iMovie does fine with it. Always worked great on Premiere for me.
@oxmate6 жыл бұрын
i got coral videostudio ultimate 2018 it has everything you need to edit.....So would MP4 at 24fps be just as good as AVCHD? i only ask because the location of where video's to photo's are saved on the memory card but i do like how the AVCHD i can get upto 8hrs straight recording without having to press record again but can't in MP4 mode

Another great video :) Just wondering why not shoot 4k and downscale to HD in post?
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
+jason rae Thanks, Jason! It mostly comes down the time to edit and output. When you're doing almost-daily vlogs and editing at night, it adds at least an hour for me to output plus it's slower to edit the VLOG and copy footage so you're making your bedtime a good chunk later. I might drop some serious cash on a video card to help but my entire vlogging gets a hit of Lumetri colour correction which means it's more intensive to output.
@sinjon7 жыл бұрын
Hey Justin, I thought I understood this but I guess I’m still a bit confused. Why did you set the continuous autofocus to ON in the menu and then use AFS/AFF? Doesn’t one override the other? Sorry to be a pain with my questions. You explain the G7(which I now own) the best. Thanks
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
+Cheddar Bob No worries at all. My understanding is that the AFF mode with continuous autofocus will refocus as often as it senses when the focus has changed as opposed to AFC which is constantly refocusing regardless what it senses.

Ive heard the side clips make noise that comes out in the video since they dangle on the sides, have you notices that issue with this camera?
@justinspirational8 жыл бұрын
i think the 7-14mm will focus quicker as the aperture doesn't go as fast as that on the other two lenses and therefore doesn't have as shallow a depth of field thus less distance to change focus but then you're sacrificing the better bokeh for the f2.8 lens- do you also render at 24fps as I thought KZbin uploads convert best at 30fps or do you convert the 24fps to 30fps? I've seen some of your more recent vlogs run on KZbin at 1080 60fps though as well..
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
You're definitely right on the aperture having a big effect on focusing speed. Really noticed that since using the 12mm 1.4. I don't have one set frame rate I do. I like the look of 24fps the best, but the G7 only does 24fps in 4K MP4 or AVCHD. No MP4 option for 1080p at 24fps. Anyway, that just means that some days I'll throw it in 30fps MP4 or 24fps AVCHD. The odd time I'll do a 60fps one, but that's tougher in low light. I don't like structure so every day is different as I'm always experimenting. Shooting in 4K adds an extra hour to output time which means going to bed at least an hour later which I don't love.

I shot a video with G7+12-35mm and had the AF on and the lens made constant focusing sounds that recorded straight into my camera. I think it may have to do with shooting in a low light. Any thoughts?
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
+Dan Jeong Conditioning Hmm...I don't know that I've ever had to use audio when I've been using that lens and not using an external mic. The vibrations of motors often travel through cameras and into internal mics But I find it's usually on noisier lenses. I've never heard a sound from my 12-35/2.8. I'd HIGHLY recommend grabbing an external one - even if it's the cheap VideoMicGO like I use. It's fantastic. Try it with that and if it solves it, then I guess it is the lens. If not, maybe there's an issue with the lens.

Great video! Quick question though, are the settings you use while vlogging the same settings you're using to film this video? Or do you use different settings when you're in a more controlled environment like you are here? I just picked up the G7 when it dropped to $499 (Awesome Pirce!!) and I've been playing around with the settings to get the right look. I really like whatever settings you're using for this video. Thanks and keep up the great work!

For something like this, it's on all manual settings. so that the focus and exposure isn't changing as I move my head. But as far as the contrast/saturation/sharpness, etc... I basically have the GH3 set to the same settings as you see in this video and then I add a little more contrast, vignetting, and saturation in post.

But if you set your camera to Aperture priority, you have no control over the shutter speed, so how will you know what it is? I heard there's a workaround using AE lock to get shutter speed to be 1/50 and the aperture to be shot wide open, with auto ISO (as I heard there is no Auto ISO in manual). Does that work? Regards.

Hey Justin I'm trying to find out what the best setting is to record in Slomotion and in timelapse. Could you help me out?
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
for slow motion, just when you're shooting slow-mo, set it to either MP4 or AVCHD 1920x1080 60fps. Then slow the footage down when you're editing. For timelapse, I actually use the photo mode set to 16x9 aspect ratio at medium size (which is 4K) and then put the dial on the top-left of the camera to time-lapse. For skies, I do 3 seconds inbetween, 240 frames (shoot 300 if you're shooting 30fps). The camera will make a 10-second clip out of that at the end in 4K which is handy because you can crop or do a slow zoom to mix it up.

+Benjamin Nowak Hey Ben, I've rotated through a few different lenses. Started with the kit then did the 12-35/2.8 then the 7-14mm f/4. Panasonic sent me a couple lenses to try out so the last 4 or 5 are with some other ones but I'd say the 7-14 is my main vlogging lens.

***** Hold off on the G7 and try and get the new G85 (or G80 if you're in Europe) that's the new version of it. In-body image stabilization, weather sealed, and a couple other things.

Justin Reves That's great to know! I'll have to check that out. Do you recommend the Panasonic lenses or have you tried other brands as well?
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
***** For vlogging, you only want Panasonic lenses because Panasonic's "Depth from Defocus" technology which lets it focus much faster only works with Panasonic lenses so the Olympus lens I tried before I knew that would hunt a lot. If you're in manual focus, then there would be lots of other options.

Yeah, I find it's not as much of an issue if you're shooting slow-motion, but if you're shooting regular with no stabilization, you want to use a camera strap tight or tripod or something to help it be stable. The wider you are, the less you notice, though!

@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
Hey Kiran! I guess it depends what you're using it for. The 7-14mm is a better pure vlogging lens (and you'll find it autofocuses much more smootherly than the 9-18mm) but the 12-35 is better for cinematics and making more "filmish" stuff. You can still vlog with it, but it's not quite as wide.
@KiranReese7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the answer! Yea I vlog a lot, but I really want the blury backround. because of the 7-14mm f.4 hasn't this backround I would probably use the 12-35mm f2.8. Is the autocus good on the 12-35 or is the 7-14mm faster? What would you say, what shall I buy?

Thanks Justin, some great tips, especially those focus settings for vlogging really seem to improve things! One question though, why are you shooting AVC, not MP4? Better quality video or easier to process in post?
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
+Mr Gijs I like shooting at 24fps and there's no MP4 option for 1080p. 4K takes a lot longer to process and edit. So AVCHD is the only 1080p/24fps option which is odd. Anyway, that's why. But lately I've been shooting 30fps MP4 sometimes too. Whatever I feel like in the morning. :)

Hello Justin, I ve using my g7 to vlog with the kit lens one a small bendy tripod like yours and to be honest my nr 1 problem is not focus but stabilizing, the OIS on the kit lens is not holding up when shooting with one hand and I'm thinking of buying a lens with the upgraded OIS. Did you have the same problem with the kit lens;
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
+Christos Bardas (MMA Greece) Hey Christos, I never noticed huge issues with the OIS on it, but they can only handle so much. The bigger your bendy tripod, the more stable it will be, but I shot all my Mexican vacation vlogs with the kit lens and a Gorillapod SLR Zoom which wasn't that big. I did VLOGS 25-80 or so with the 12-35/2.8 which has the Power OIS which is better than the Mega OIS in the kit lens, but it's as much money as the camera. Really, really nice lens, though. Just to confirm, have you double-checked that it's switched on in the menu and not just set to vertical or something like that?
@TheBard848 жыл бұрын
I ve been thinking that maybe i missed something on the menu. Its kinda new and i came from a canon DSLR where you just flicked a switch. If its not a problem can you tell me where to go in the menu and check?
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
Yup! Go to a camera (not video) mode, go to your Menu and look on Page 7 of your camera settings. There's a setting there called Stabilizer. Make sure that's turned on. You can set it to just vertical if you're doing a lot of panning, but otherwise, just leave it on.

Thing about 60fps is that you can slow it down for slow motion and then it looks especially smooth. But for regular-speed motion, I don't think one is any more stable than the other. 60fps just looks "smoother" because of all the extra frames but it's weird.

Never tried but it doesn't sound like it you can. Mine always go through editing before going to KZbin but I guess if you were using KZbin for editing, that would be a problem.

Ive been wanting to get the pancake 20mm f1.7 lens for my g7 But the glass is sooooo small :S is it really gonna give me better low light performance :S I mean if the aperture is 1.7 but on such a small diameter.. isnt it taking in less light then something like the 14-42 f3.5 that has much bigger glass, or is that wider glass just needed for the zoom? :S
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
You need more glass when you're going wide at low apertures than you do when you're zooming. You gotta bend all the light at wide widths. I used the 14mm f/2.5 pancake and was super impressed by it for how little glass it was. The 20mm f1.7 lets in about 4x as much light as the kit lens. That's a lot! Plus it'll blur the background waaaaaaay more. I wouldn't be afraid of it!

I do have a question. I am a Canon user and i want to shoot 4k, but in order to have a Canon with 4k, I would have to sent $3,000 or more. So i decided i woul buy the 80d ($1,700) because the AF is GREAT. But now i am seeing that for $700 i can shoot 4K?! So, will you recommend this camera for KZbin or any type of video work? wha about the quality in 1080? Is it like canon? Thanks!
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
I think you'll find the 1080p and 4K quality to be outstanding. But the autofocus isn't nearly as good as the 80D. I did 160 VLOGs with it and it's fine, but it's not the sweet dual pixel system in the 70D/80D system. So it's a tradeoff.
@DemonJolt7 жыл бұрын
Justin Reves But, it also has 60fps, which the 80d doesn't.
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
DemonJolt 70D only does 30fps @ 1080p but the 80D can do 1080p60fps.

Apeture priority in video works? So the camera holds apeture and picks the shutter and iso? What I want is to set shutter and aperture and let camera pick iso. So M mode with auto iso, is this possible?
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
+MalikPhotography unfortunately no. Manual doesn't do auto ISO which is rather unfortunate. Definitely something I see a lot of people wishing for. But there's Aperture and Shutter priority in the video mode in which you can lock ISO.

@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
Try and find a 14mm f/2.5 used and the GMW-GWC1 wide angle converter. Should be under $500 used and it's a great combo. Did a couple vlogs with it. Better in low light and blurs the background more. Currently loving using the 15mm f/1.7 and the GWC1 converter but that's a bit more.
@Rugit07 жыл бұрын
@Justin Reves Thanks for all your help. Just a few more questions what is the advantage of the 14mm over the 14-42mm kit lens. Also which wide angle converter would you buy on a budget?
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
The 14mm lets in twice as much light as the 14-42mm and blurs the background twice as much. Plus, you can't put the wide-angle converter on the 14-42mm or else you sit a tiny bit of the edges at 14mm. So you can make the 14mm effectively an 11mm which is cool. I would only buy the Panasonic one because it just works and it's not that expensive.

thanks! do u know why when im getting this light/dark effect, when i point at a light source everything around it gets dark but when i point elsewhere it turns normal, same thing happens if i point at something black
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
Unicorn I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but try adjusting your "metering" settings with the different options. If it's set to "spot" then the camera will try and keep whatever your focus point is as the thing with the proper amount of light so if you point at something super bright, it will crank down the light to compensate. You can set it so it takes the whole "frame" into account so a single light won't cut the whole scene. I use "spot" so that whatever I'm focused on (typically my face) is the right amount of light.
@gregking66288 жыл бұрын
If I set the camera to Aperture Priority so that it automatically controls the white balance and ISO, is there any way to always have the shutter speed set at 1/60? I'm not sure if it will or not, but I don't want the camera changing the shutter speed while I'm recording.
@JustinReves8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, no. It's my understanding that the camera will try and follow the shutter speed rule of double the frame rate, but if you're in a bright situation, it's impossible for it to do that if you're shooting at a wide open aperture as it would be way overexposed. The only way to control both shutter and aperture is to do it in manual, but unfortunately, there's no auto ISO. GH5 is the first panasonic to have auto ISO in manual. But just know that if the camera is at 30fps, it should be doing 1/60th until it gets too bright or I think it will drop down to 1/30th if it can't crank the ISO any higher.
@gregking66288 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. At least it will automatically maintain 1/60th shutter speed in most situations then. Thank you!
@SteveMichalak7 жыл бұрын
Hey Justin, why do you prefer AFS over AFC?
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
+Steve Michalak In video, it's actually AFF. And it's supposed to sense when something changes and then adjust as opposed to AF-C which will always be adjusting focus and be more distracting because contrast detection has to go past focus and then come back. That's the theory anyway. It mostly worked.

My G7 seems to AF relatively well as you show ... BUT .. only when handheld moving around as you are doing in the video, where the entire frame view changes drastically. However, when I place my G7 on a tripod and move objects into the single point focus area, I can't get focus in AF as I move objects back and forth. The only AF setting that works for me while the camera is stationary on a tripod is the AF tracking ... But, the problem with that is that I don't always want to focus on 1 thing like my face. I may want to hold a different object up to the camera a bit closer ... and I want focus to move to that area. Do you have an AF test when the G7 is sitting on a tripod without movement? I can only get AF to work by tapping on the camera thus resetting the frame view. Arghh!
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that’s simply the Achilles heel of Panasonic. It’s basic contrast autofocus which struggles in those settings. Slow and misses lots. It’s amazing at so many things but that isn’t one of them.
@MAKUvisuals6 жыл бұрын
I've had similar issues... Try using AFF mode, 49-area, and make sure continuos AF is ON in the menu area.

During the focus test in this video, you can see it hunting for focus constantly. I love my G7 but I don't think it's autofocus modes are usable while shooting video.
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
It really just depends on your expectations and how often you need it to refocus. I used the G7 for 150 VLOGs and it was fine. Not perfect. The odd time the focus was annoying and ruined a shot, but I made it work. It’s certainly not like my Sony now. But if you’re careful, it shouldn’t get in the way for a certain style of videos.
@JimLeonard7 жыл бұрын
Which autofocus method did you use for your vlogs? Face tracking, or something else? Which Sony do you have right now that has decent autofocus for video? (If it's in a video and I missed it, please refer me to the video -- thanks!)

What resolution do you have your settings on because if you watch my first intro video, im filming with the g7 but it only comes out as 480p but it was finalized in imovie as 1080p, and the video quality isnt good at all, do you think you can help? thanks.
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
You should just try it again and double-check the 1080p setting in iMovie. Whether you shoot at 480p, 720p, 1080p or any other resolution, once you put it into iMovie and output at 1080p, the video file will be 1080p and KZbin will show 1080p in the settings because it respects the video file. Could look crappy, but it will say 1080p. In your case, KZbin thinks it's 480p. Either an issue with the upload or with the file, but the camera settings appear like they were fine. Click on the video file on your computer and hit CMD-I to bring up the info and see if it says the resolution is 1920x1080. If it does then the file is fine, it got output at 1080p and it was just an issue with the KZbin upload. If it says 853x480 then the file only came out as 480p. If you uploaded directly from iMovie to KZbin, next time just output the file to your computer and upload it after.

Thanks for the link. Your settings are very similar to mine. Except for the contrast and the focus settings. Since most of the times on my videos Im a little bit over the left slide I use follow face focus. But I really need a prime lens because Im not so happy with the stock lens. +That Horror Show I didn't have any luck with the face tracking. You can still set the point on the screen off to one side and just keep yourself in that part of the frame.
