My apologies about the weirdly rotated shots... they were correct in LumaFusion when I exported. Must be a bug!

I love my G85 as well. I've had my camera for 5 months and for the price I love it. I'm coming off a Nikon D5300 which was too bulky, had no IBIS, and no EVF. I love seeing the exposure in my EVF and my stills are top notch. I agree about the Stabilization as that allows some ISO 200 tack sharp shots with very low shutter speeds. Is the G85 a perfect camera - No! But for the $800 price tag with the 12-60mm kit lens you can't beat it.

Nice review and great photos man. I am pleased with my G85 as well. I mainly use my G85 for vlogging and my youtube videos. I still only use my kit but rented the 8-18 for my trip to Thailand and loved that lens. Considering it to be my next purchase.

Great balanced review! For me, this G85 was a perfect intro camera into the world of interchangeable lenses. I now know it's limitations and strength. I kind of treat it as some form of trainer equipment, like having one arm tied behind my back compared to everyone else. Will make you a better photographer for sure. Good job on upping that video production quality, haven't been to your channel for a few months, but great to see you making improvements. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us!

Thank you for posting. More people should make reviews like this. This way we know if the product is holding together ... in particular the touch screen. I plan to buy the SmallRig Cage to protect it as much as posible.

OrlandoPla Thanks for your reply. A screen protector would have helped me out... I hesitated buying one because I thought it would interfere with flipping and folding the LCD back against the body, which I never really did. Lesson learned!

Oh hey, G85 WV user here! Currently using my G85 in a SmallRig cage with the Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster, Sigma 18-35, Tokina 11-16, and Canon 85 1.8 and I love it! Crane 2 is in the near future, and I don't see much need to upgrade for a long time.

Good honest review. We need more long term reviews like this to make the public truly understand the pros and cons. I hope m43 hasn't hit a wall in advancement because it seems like it's just 1 sensor generation away from solving a lot of the problems you mentioned. If it can provide at least 1 more stop of better low light, better DR, maybe a few more megapixels, etc., then users wouldn't feel the need to move to FF. My problem with m43 is that their lenses are as expensive and sometimes even more expensive than the FF equivalent. So dollar for dollar, it doesn't make sense for me to invest in my m43 gear when I can invest in my FF system instead.

Yeah, the price levels of top-spec m4/3 glass are pretty insane right now. Thankfully there are some value performers on the lower end that hold up pretty well. The 42.5mm f/1.7 is a great example.

Good to hear someone who is not full of superlatives for the gear that he uses. I have G85, and my problem is with the low light performance in videos when we cannot lower the shutter speed. I shoot on shutter priority of 50 or 125 as per the fps. My experience is that for professional shoots it is not safe to go above ISO 800 else you might be heartbroken while editing the footage in post. For low light videos the only option today is full frame, but the costs are just beyond reach for most professionals. :(

Thanks for your honest 1 year review! When I post my G85 photos on Facebook I get nothing but compliments and people asking, "what kind of camera do you have?" I think if people are constantly asking, "what kind of camera do you have," you are trending in the right camera direction. The biggest thing that struck me from going from my Nikon DSLR to a G85 was the weight loss. I love carrying around my G85 and I find I'm taking more pictures just due to the compactness of the Panasonic. I, for one, will never go back to a mirrored camera again.

what camera can you recommend? I'm currently heavily debating between the 77d and 80d..mostly for video and I've heard good things about the battery of 80d vs the 77d. Panasonic g85 seems like a great one as well, especially the size. Any honest opinions are welcome :)

As much as I hate saying that...Panasonic\Sony\Canon\Nikon\whatever.. should learn from the mobile industry. (don't kill me) Add a fake bokeh effect! Copy the best! There is no need to carry a full frame camera with huge and heavy equipment just for the smoother blur, you can get that easily with software! "But it's not perfect" you say - right! They should improve it and release firmware updates! "But it's not just the shallow DOF, what about the dynamic range?" - Again, right! But you can see already how a tiny 1/2.6" sensor with Google HDR+ algorithm destroys even APS-C cameras when comparing dynamic range (SOOC jpegs). Why? Because Computational Photography is the future, that's why. So.. Panasonic, move forward. Make the leap into better software rather than losing a race with Sony about hardware.

Same here, enjoy my G85 in good light and for all video, but I have the same reservations about the image quality in low light and the lack of shallow depth of field. Mind you, now in January 2020 a full frame Nikon 610 is so cheap that I've decided I can have both and have the best of both worlds.

Your assessments are right, many raved reviews about m4/3 but it has its limitations like you mention on this video. If one is not careful, taking shots indoors and you need to lift shadows, you get noise, however, APS-C OLD camera like Sony Nex-5n is much better, in terms of dynamic and noise performance.

exactly how I feel as well with my G85. The noise and shadows are my only concern with this camera. Unfortunately the G9 does not solve that issue at all and the points are not important enough for me to carry around a Sony A7III with big heavy and expensive lenses.

Recently upgraded from G7 to G80 mainly for video and manual nikon lenses usage. Nice to find a real "review" which says almost the problems of m43 system. I already have a D610 Nikon but I totally dislike the AF system, a pain with low DoF. I'm Sony smartphone addicted and thinking about a drastic change, going from m43 and Nikon totally to Sony Mirrorless FF system. The only downside? Overpriced gear and expecially lenses -.- but I felt in love when last week for the first time I kept in my hand an old A7. It fits perfect, perceft body balance even with smaller grip! So i'm really frustrated about everything. The G80 was my goal as compact stabilized camera, I like it, but of course is not a top still camera, even if nice. Nikon is expensive too, I can get decent result but I'm gonna hate my D610, f/b focus, slow af.. etc, great picture but too much work on pp, I don't like stock raw. Selling only my Nikon gear can't get even close to half price of a new A7III. :/ What's your thinking?

@rjkral
@rjkral 5 жыл бұрын
731 Woodworks I am torn between M50’s and g85 also. What did you decide? From what I can tell, M50’s 1080p is softer, g85 features are better (eg 4K photo features and easy frame grabs from video). Also I HATE the delayed review after taking a shot on M50. M50 is lighter though and a touch smaller. M50 far better auto focus in video.

Agree with you about the sensor, no great improvements in the last few years. found the green lifting the shadows too. in great light they are great. low light, just ok. not a FF. but so far they have not been able to beat physics. lots of bells and whistles in the new models, but without a better sensor they all give about the same results. nice review.

Thanks for a solid, fair review 👍 If I want to do more portraits, outdoor and in, with flash, getting a shallow depth of field, would you recommend the 25mm or 42.5mm prime? Thanks
@derekaggs11
@derekaggs11 6 жыл бұрын
In most cases my 25mm gets more use than my 42.5mm. Particularly if you're using fill flash, the 25mm would be better as it would allow a closer working distance where the flash would be more effective.

Keith, I have the Mitakon 25mm f/0.95. It's not the best lens for cross-frame sharpness but central sharpness is great and the manual focus is a boon to video shooting.

Thanks for the super quick reply man. Yeah I was looking at that one exactly, I'm aware that it can be a little soft around the edges! I branched out a little recently and am considering buying the Panasonic-Leica-DG-25mm-f1.4-lens instead due to its AF capabilities. Do you think, with the micro FT system, it would probably be a better solution to go for the faster MF Mitakon considering it would most probably give you a better shallow DOF? Or do you think I'm probably better off going for the Leica considering the AF is there and I might not lose too much DOF? Lets just say I love photography, but, to some degree, I'm focusing on videography with regards to equip. Cheers

I'm a bit pissed off with my G80 [EU] after 6mths, the bottom left hinge cover for the LCD has come off, without any knocks or drops, the camera has been very well looked after - this piece of plastic covering just came away for no reason. The rubber on mine is also sdimilar to what you showed in the video, it's peeling away a bit under the shutter. Other than that I love the camera, but now I'm thinking it's not so well built as I first thought.
@derekaggs11

Uncaged I’d be pissed too. Were you able to glue it back on? Too bad the build isn’t GH5/G9 level, but it’s nice that the front plate is magnesium and the weathersealing is up to par.
@Cagey7531
@Cagey7531 6 жыл бұрын
I could do that but that would void the warranty, the store i bought it from will take it back and send for repairs, I just hope they don't try pull some 'user error' BS. Luckily I did find the piece that came off in the garden [I had been shooting some macro] so last resort, i could glue it on, as it is a non movable part. But the grip starting to loosen at front is concerning too

In terms of resistance and durability I have 1 question : how far is it waterproof? If you, by accident, submerge it for a moment does it run any longer?
@Pytte

you would have to dry it out then, the ports are covered by some rubber, but submersion would get water in there.. I dont think it would make any permanent damage though.
