Growing up with camcorders, from Hi8 to MiniDV to HDD, using them for skateboarding and just documenting time with friends and family, I’ve missed the freedom and flexibility in recent years since the mirrorless revolution. I’ve been considering grabbing a camcorder again, your videos (especially on the HC-X1500 & it’s equals) have been really helpful. Thanks for those!

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you find these videos helpful. If you are hoping to gain any amount of bokeh in your shots, telephoto and close focus techniques aside, the 1" sensor cameras show separation of subject and background much more than the 1/2" sensor class cameras (even considering zoom and close focus). People seem to ask about that a lot, which is why I mention it. I love the portability and size of the 1/2 inch sensor cameras, and don't worry about low light too much. I just film where I desire, mostly looking for environmental light. Wedding receptions, however, generally do need additional light when using a smaller sensor camcorder. That is something I learned the hard way. Cheers, and if you pick one up, let me know how it goes and what you got.

Wow, you are the very first I came across the community to explain the differences in usability to a total newbie like me. So many paid influencers tell us to use smartphones with not so handy accesoires like gimbals. Then if you move around the gimbal can't cope and ruins your recording. Also with small photo 📷 you cannot zoom like a camcorder The you have the ones that promote a single video cam, sometimes in some way of slight comparison with one other. Now I found this one really explaining the differences in usability. Great job! Thnx

I got a GH3 with three great lenses but want to find a really great camera for 2023.. I am considering one of these HC X camcorders.. but not sure what really are the difference of the X2000, X20 and the X2... is huge price difference... but what can one do that the other cannot really? any advice? I want to do street documentaries but in a more cinematic style ... As I want a more cinematic style I am also considering the GH5S and the Black Magic Pocket 4K But I am not sure they are good at the street compared to a camcorder, but I already got the lenses that fit them, and the cinematic look is important to me, I want to use Poetic mood in my documentaries mixed with ability to catch what is going on in the moment sometimes. I was thinking I need at least 12 bit first for great color grading, but perhaps 10 bit is fine... but grain in low light and get too high gain is not fun and I like to make work that I can sell. I did a lot of gerilla journalism when I was young working in Washington D.C. so always loved camcorders and broadcast cameras... But now I want to create something poetic and not a news reportage.. can these two worlds of a war worth camcorder with cinematic abilities be met?! 😀😇 thanks if you got time to give some ideas...

I've done a lot of videos on the X1500/2000 x Hcx1/ux180 and this video. It explains all of the history and how Panasonic is combining camcorder lines. If you didn't watch this video in its entirety, then it will answer some of the questions that you have. Also check out the videos about the HCX 1500 and 2000. Camcorders don't do as well in low light as micro 4/3 cameras or APSC cameras or full frame cameras. It's because generally speaking camcorders have a 1-in sensor. HCX 1500, 2000, and AGCX 10 each have a 1/2.5 in sensor. This makes them worse in low light than their 1 inch counterparts. So asking about having high quality low light from any of the camcorders with these sensors or form factors, will be difficult. If you are in doubt, get a camera with the largest sensor you can based on your budget. Budget is another thing to consider. You got the cash, spring for a full frame camera with interchangeable lenses, and then you can have the best of both worlds: low light, multiple lens choices, 12-bit color, even raw, high bit rate internal, you ask for it you can get it in those packages. Specifically, you can pick up a Panasonic S5, the original, and an atimos Ninja, and get Apple ProRes raw output to the monitor. You can get the Ninja for around 500 bucks or less, and I have seen The Panasonic S5 on sale with a free 50 F1.8 lens for $1,300. Generally it's $1,600 for the body only and $1,900 for the body and lens. If you're stuck on the camcorder format, that's fine too. The HCX20 is probably your best bet for what you're asking for. It's got the 1-inch sensor, 10-bit color Up to 422 sampling, and it's got excellent autofocus and capabilities. It's a great camcorder. The highest bit rate it will record internally is 200 megabits per second in 4K 60. Again, a camera with interchangeable lenses will record in much higher internal bit rates and codecs. You will also get a 20 time zoom, excellent audio inputs, and it's pretty big for a handheld camcorder. And it's decent in low light especially if you use post-production software such as topaz or neat video. HCX 1500 or 2000 will compare very similarly to the HCX20 with the difference being synthesized and zoom range and overall size. Everything else will be almost identical. You'll get a 24 time zoom, a smaller size, and the exact same image processing and codecs. If you were asking about the HCX 1500 compared to the 2000, skip the 2000 if you do not need a 3G SDI port. The HCX 1500 and HCX 2000 are the exact same camera. I've done plenty of videos about this. This includes the AGCX 10. All three are the exact same camera. The only thing you're paying for are different video out capabilities. So, save yourself $200, and pick up the X 1500 for about $1,700 and then pick up the top handle for the X 1500 for about $300 and spend around $2,000 total. Compare that to the x2000 at $2,200, and you'll see your paying $200 more for a 3G SDI port that 99% of people don't use. However, considering that you come from a broadcast journalism background, you may need the 3G SDI port. You may actually use it. In that case you're actually getting a really good deal because most companies, canon especially, charge about $500 extra for a 3G SDI port. So pick your poison. Note that I use the X 1500 with the top handle all the time. The image quality is excellent especially in daylight, and you can get some beautiful background blur if you've zoomed in and focused close on a subject. Otherwise pretty much everything will be in focus. It's low light capabilities are rather limited if you were to consider filming a dark wedding reception with this camera. However, when I have used the camera at the oceanfront at night time, where you might do other broadcast or journalistic type of things, like talking to people on the street, or standing at a dark pier watching people fish, stuff like that, I have found the image quality and low light capabilities to be adequate to good, some even may say excellent. I think it does a great job. See my low light at the pier video with the X 1500, it'll blow you away. So, as long as you understand how to use your camera and the iris and the gain, and you test, then you'll be fine with anything that you choose. I find that people that know they need camcorders, really need a camcorder. People that just think they need camcorders, really need an interchangeable lens mirrorless camera. You'll have to decide. Please use my Amazon links if you choose to buy one, and keep me posted. I'd like to hear how your journey goes. And if you're still around the area of course I'm in Virginia Beach, let me know. I always like talking to industry pros you know chew-the-fat as they say. Cheers.

Will Panasonic be releasing a new version of the Panasonic HC-X2000 (x1500/xc10) ?
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
They probably will, but not anytime soon. It seems that most Panasonic camcorders go through a three to four year upgrade cycle. It also seems like each camera division upgrades within that cycle, so there is an upgrade every year through the different camera lines. That would put us about 2 years away from an upgrade to the camera lines for the hcx 1500 2000 and cx10

Thanks for the video. How do you think the CX350 and HC-X2 images will compare to each other? I really like the CX350 but I had to really bend the image to get the highlights under control. I kind of hope the HC-X2 might be a chance for Panasonic to improve image quality three years on from the CX350. Also, do you see an updated version of the CX350 ever appearing? Seems like there might not be much they can add outside of more quality.
@RobertHamm

The CX line is their "broadcast focused" line of cameras. The HCX.. line is panasonics Household Consumer "peosumer" line of cameras. So, yes, Panasonic will upgrade the CX350 at some point. It seems like 4-5 years is the upgrade path for the CX line of cameras. Also, it's important to know that the UX like of cameras has seemingly merged with the CX and HC line.. so, we will have to wait and see what that means.

Thanks Robert. I'm a long time UX180 user for KZbin ultraHD 60fps MP4 vids. Thinking of upgrading. I guess most applicable changes for me would be 10bit and the global sensor (which you only mentioned once at the end). You think those things alone will make a big difference to the quality of the captured frame by frame video for filming fast moving action like I do?
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your question. My thoughts are, yes. You will see an improvement based on your use case, but it may not be the improvement you expect. Here are some considerations: 8-bit to 10-bit color is a game changer with regard to color gradients. Doing from a supported individual color reporduction space of 16 million colors to almost 2 billion colors is a serious enhancement. However, this only matters if you see color banding on a regular basis OR push color hue and phase a lot in post production. If you usually have an image you like from your UX180, and you are used to exposing correctly and not going harsh color grades and exposure corrections, then 10 bit may not help you as much as it sounds like it would. You won't get any new resolutions, but rates, or frame rates. You will get access to HEVC which is slowly becoming the industry standard and is (in my experience) a better codec for preserving detail while saving smaller files. Read up a out HEVC if you haven't. It's a good reason to upgrade. It can be harder to work with in post production, but I haven't noticed anything terrible. You will still have some LONG GOP options. The sensor is excellent. Panasonic gave the camera a great sensor with a fast scan rate and a "global" shutter. Yes, I mention that once.. but this is because the marketing material is kind of a mixed bag of, "is it or isn't it". I read that it was, I've also seen comments that it is an "electronic global shutter".. whatever that means... And so, I don't know anymore. Panasonic certainly isnt addressing it currently. No matter, though. The sensor is great and provides a great image. You will always benefit from a newer sensor as newer sensers generally have improved dynamic range and associated processing. So, it's better all around. Lastly, ease of use and user experience. The upgraded screen, improved processor, augmented face detection AF, and other upgrades will make using the camcorder more efficient and enjoyable. You will pay for all of these upgrades. If your UX180 is providing you the image you want, though, then the reason to upgrade would be the additional features, not the image quality. So, will the imageook better, yes. But how much better has more to do with your individual use case. Please post a link to a video you ahvw done. I'd like to see what you work on. Cheers!

@@RobertHamm Thanks for the quick and awesome reply Robert. This is probably my favourite example over many years of filming and it shows the challenges of filming my subject matter. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoe7anhqnZuVoLs I manual focus with focus assist and use fast zoom throughout the flight. You will see colour banding especially in some segments where the sky is solid blue. I hold the camera unsupported because tripods and monopods can limit movement from panning from ground to almost directly overhead in split seconds...so the OIS has to work quite hard and is sometimes noticeable. I am filming UHD 2160/59.94 150M MP4 in F3:Spark. Can you please share where you go the muff for the integrated mic on your UX180. It's actually a good mic but terrible in any wind outside? I do use a Sennheiser on one of the XLRs but would be good to have useable audio from both. Thanks again and any critical feedback based on my vid appreciated !
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
You can get the wind screen here amzn.to/3NI3btQ I put some gaf tape around the internal mic area so that I can pply two drops of super glue, one on each side of the internal mic, and then attach the wind screen to the camera. It will fall off a lot if you don't do something to hold it on and this keeps the camera from being damages. As for the banding and upgrades.. 10 bit video will get rid of all of the banding and the upgraded processor will help a lot with ghosting when watching slomo video. You could also change your time interpolation settings in your editing software, you could also choose a non interlaced export format. There is a lot of stuff that goes into what I'm saying here that I'm not saying because of brevity. However, I didn't notice the banding on my z fold 2 and had to check out your video in my production 42" monitor to see it more closely. That being the case, my observations of your video are really "nit-picking". Your video is great and to free float the camera with manual focus like you did at that RC air show is a difficult feat. You did it excellently. Ask me how I know.. (I've been recording the airshows from NAS Oceana for years. It's not easy... especially on a tripod). I think the biggest advantage a new camera will bring is better screen that you can actually use in the sun, faster processor to help with changing lighting, upgraded image stabilization, a better video codec (with HEVC), and finally, the 10 bit color. I would rank them in that order from most benefit to least. I don't think I mentioned it before, but you will get a bump in bitrate to 200Mbps from 150Mbps when filming 4k 60p. If you ever drop to 30fpa or 24, then it will bump back down to 150Mbps. Good work on your channel, and good work on your subscribers. I know it takes some time and effort, and I'm happy to see that your hard work and love of what you shows through. Cheers.

We do online conference and corporate live streams, and our company got a few ux180s. Do you think it's worth upgrading to the hcx2 system? and I've always been curious about why panasonic doesn't offer 12g sdi in their camcorder line.
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
In your case, probably not unless you would benefit from the 10bit codec. That is unlikely considering the bandwidth needed for online conferencing, it would just be crunched to 8 bit in most programs anyway, especially if streaming. So unless you make content for download delivery that includes lots of color gradients, then the 180's should serve you well. There are better reasons to upgrade on the UX front: the screen, face tracking, and stabilization are quite a lot better. Those reasons could be why you should upgrade. The screen on the 180 is horrible and very reflective.. so if you work outside, then the HCX2 would be a lot of help. Not to mention that you could use the screen at the same time as the viewfinder. As for 12G SDI.. it's a bandwidth thing. Again streaming in 4k won't work without a strong bonded internet device and good signal and or satellite uplink.. Many news stations still broadcast remote feeds in 1080, do no need for anything more. 3G SDI is the standard for remote live stream reporting and Panasonic is going for that crowd.

Great explanation about the Panasonic line and how this 2 camcorders sits in. The big question is how is the low light capabilities and autofocus. Autofocus from Panasonic is not their strength in camcorders nor mirrorless.

Thank you for explaining. I have the GH5M2 and wonder if the HC-X2 is a good choice for a 4 camera 4K studio. Probably yes. We also want to use them outside, so the 4K 50 frames (in Europe) is indispensable. By the way, your beautiful photos on the screen behind you do distract from your great story. I think 4K reduces artifacts that HD sometimes shows, and of course the post-crop option. And it's beautiful on KZbin.
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
I think so. I use the HCX1 and HCX1500 for a lot of my studio videos. I recognize that these cameras do not offer the same low light and shallow depth of field performance as larger sensor cameras. I have other cameras I could use. Generally, I prefer the ease of use that a camcorder provides. In studio use, the low light performance isn't important because I have plenty of lighting. Shallow depth of field can be accomplished by zooming in on something and focusing closely (when I need that). The only buying suggestion I would give is this: if you know you need a camcorder, then you need a camcorder. If you think you need a camcorder, then you probably need a camera. Camcorders are versatile tools, but they do one thing well- video. It's easy because it's all in one. Long lens, pro audio, ND filters, full size HDMI port, lots of codecs and video options... But that's all it does. Your GH5m2 is a beautiful morrorless camera. I really like it. It will give you better results almost every time and with any lens. But the result may not be as dramatic as it sounds or looks like on paper, and it comes at the cost of trying to find an equivalent set of lenses to cover the same range as the X2.. so, with that said, keep me posted on what you decide, and thanks for your thoughts on the background monitor. Cheers.

@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
I can't say exactly because I don't have a DVX200, but generally speaking the DVX would still be better in low light due to the larger sensor. This would be especially tru when comparing to the HCx2000 range with the 1/2.5" sensors, and marginally better or the same as the new HCX2. I've seen that sensor perform very well in low light and Panasonic rates it around 13 stops of dynamic range. That's pretty good regardless of sensor size. The new cameras would have a leg up with 10bit color. That is helpful more in post production. If you get your color and exposure right in camera, then the final image quality will be very consistent between them (low light and DR being advancements that the newer sensors will bring). Cheers.

Hello, i have the HC-X1 and a Sony RX100M7, how about the "Sharpness" of the picture of the HC-X2 ? My Sony Rx100M7 does very sharp 4k video and in comparison my HC-X1 4k looks blurry or too much Grainy, i was unable to reach the settings like Sony RX100M7 have a perfect balance for have a great sharpness without too much noise than with the HC-X1, sharp picture mean full grainy or no grainy you get soft like "blurry" picture. (I not mean HC-X1 is bad but the Sony RX-100M7 do it better , if you have a good settings files or settings for having perfect balance between sharpness without too much noise, i am interested)

Better, but both cameras require a setup. Cheaper consumer cameras generally have fewer options and a baked in preset. So they may look better but not actually be better. It's all about how you set it up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5e8qXWdjZanatE

I've been wanting an improved version of the UX-180 / HC-X1. Looks like they might have done it. I hate HEVC. How many recording modes are like what the old cameras did?
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
I like HEVC for a delivery format whenever possible. As an acquisition format it seems to be pretty good too. If you want additional formats you'll really need to look at the CX 350, or other cameras. You can use other formats but the bit rate is a lot lower. Also, the hcx2 won't give you 60 frames a second in 4k. That's a detail I found out a little bit after I made this video.

@@RobertHamm Thank you. I realize HEVC is "better" but I dislike it. The HC-X2 spec says this is avail: "MOV: [4:2:0 8bit] UHD 3840x2160 59.94p/50.00p 420LongGOP 150M: Average 150Mbps (VBR)" That sounds like h.264 which was avail on the HC-X1? Hopefully?

Which ones good to buy that has shallow depth of field and a good picture for filming?
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
Well, shallow depth of field isn't something that camcorders are known for because they generally use a small sensor compared to APSC and Full Frame cameras. Between the two, you will be able to create background blur more easily with the HCX2 than the The HCX20, but it won't be anything compared to what you could get with a larger sensor. The number one tip will be to zoom in. With either camera, zooming in and focusing on a close subject will be the best way to get blurry backgrounds. However, if you are looking for blurry backgrounds as a main feature, you may want to consider a camera, not a camcorder. Cheers.

The 3xCMOS 1/3 from Sony would be much better for this purpose than the 1" from Panasonic? Thanks for any help you could give me!

If you can get the Sony, pick it up. The 3x CCD is a big advantage even though the sensors are smaller. You'll get a ton of different features, a more robust build, access to songs XAVCL codec (and others) and two extra audio channels (up to 4). If I were buying with that budget, I would very likely get the Sony.

Mark it an 8 and you're entering a world of pain. A world of pain. No. I've never heard that I look like Walter. Panasonic is pretty good with these current generation of 1" sensors. @@RobertHamm hmm....I have been always a Canon guy since the original XL-1!! I have a XF300 I want to replace and I definitley would like better low light-I know a 1" sensor will never beat my c100 mk2 with a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 but a camcorder that is decent in low light (think wedding reception when there is limited light-I always bring a LED light but never enough and I don't want to blind the guests either!)...The XF400 has the same sensor but lacks the real XF factor my old XF300 has. The XF605 has the right form but is very expensive. The new Panasonic HCX2 is $1,500 US cheaper than the XF605. If the pic quality in both 1080p and 4K is the same in low light that would be good. But I think Canon has better AF than Panasonic. However, I don't need ALL the extra features the XF605 has since I won't use it in a TV studio...I wish someone could compare them with real footage. Yes, the Canon has dual pixel phase detection, so the AF is better... How much better will depend on what you are doing. Panasonics face detect and AF have always been good for my projects on their camcorders. Pannys camcorders seem to be a bit ahead of their mirrorless cameras when comparing AF.. the mirrorless cameras offer more AF modes, but the camcorders seem to stick on all the time. I use them for weddings and other things and they work great. As for the 605, yeah. It's a great camera. You gotta pay to play with Canon. I would be happy with either.

No, I don’t own one, but I would. I think that the CX350 by Panasonic is a great comparison. In face, Panasonic was in that camcorder class prior to Canon. Yes, you may be expecting too much in terms of low light performance. Camcorders are good as all In one decides. Compared to your GH6, they will be noisy and have less dynamic range, especially in low light.. but also compared to your GH6 the camcorder has a 24x zoom. There isn't one for the m43 paltform, and definetly one that would cost around $2k. So, it's a bunch of compromises. No matter if you keep the camera or not, it's probably time to consider some video denoising software. I use it on almost every project regardless of the camera I use. @RobertHamm Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and watching so far in. I didn't mean to be confusing, but I was trying to discuss these camcorders and their position in Panasonics lineup. In the video I discuss the differences between the cameras mentioned in the title. But just hearing about them isn't helpful without knowing the history of how Panasonic merged their camera lines. If you have been using the cameras over the years then you would want to know how they came about and what you were loosing/gaining as an upgrade. This being the case, my buying suggestion is that most people don't need to upgrade, unless there is a specific feature that the newer cameras offer. This means that someone with an HCX1 who may think they need the HCX2 for new features might not need the upgrade. So, that level of detail is required. But remember, I offer full refunds for videos that aren't helpful, lol. Donsodering the video is free to watch, it would seem like you got what you paid for. I hope you don't mind a little humor. Cheers.

@@RobertHamm On the contrary, my use of camcorders goes back to about 1979 - when I carried a battery powered VHS recorder with a battery belt and a shoulder mounted camera connected via an umbilical cord. Over the years I used a number of different camcorders, including, from around 2001 to 2006 a Panasonic shoulder mounted one (can't remember the model) with 3 hour DV tapes after which I switched to Sony camcorders, the VX 1000 and its successor, again I can't remember the model. I then gave up making commercial videos and just had a Panasonic palm sized camcorder for domestic use. During the past couple of years I have been using Nikon mirrorless cameras - Z6, Z7ii & Z9 for both stills and video but I don't like using the cameras in this way as they are primarily designed as still cameras and, unless one wants to invest in all sorts of accessories and rigs, don't really make good video cameras - in my opinion. This is why I am interested in the HCX2 / 20. I am not interested in getting back into broadcast so think the 20 will suit my needs rather than the 2 and when I saw the heading of your video thought I would get a good in depth review of these two models which is why I was so frustrated that the vast majority of your video was all about history and other models. I kept waiting for you to get to the point as suggested by the title. I have been out of the market for about ten years so am really not interested in a history lesson, just user experience with the model(s) I am interested in and might spend a little cash to buy!
