A very balanced review. I have had my FZ82 for over 2 years now and have used it quite extensively alongside my M43 gear. The camera has a lot of features that have trickled down from the more premium cameras such as 4K burst mode, focus stacking full touch screen, WiFi app and the list goes on. My wife has a Song HX350 bridge camera that has none of the tech stuff, no touchscreen, no 4K. Picture quality seems about the same but you really have to keep the iso at base and reduce the NR in camera to get good images. Using the full optical zoom does show up the atmospherics that can destroy sharpness in an image so I’m selective on how much zoom I use. In the past year I have bought a TZ100 with the larger 1” sensor and although it doesn’t have anywhere near the zoom range of the FZ82 I now tend to take this out with me if I want to travel light or as a backup to my M43 gear. The picture quality is far higher and you can use higher iso without too much concern. The FZ1000 is a great camera and one I did consider before I bought the TZ. I will be keeping my FZ82 for wildlife and aircraft. To sum up I think the FZ 82 is a lot of camera for the money I got mine as an open box deal from John Lewis and saved a ton of cash. It’s probably the best featured budget bridge camera from a major manufacturer on the market and with a little understanding can produce some good images.

Thanks for watching Dave. I agree the little FZ82 is a powerhouse with so many features and superb value for money. Once you get the hang of it you can get some great shots with it. It has certainly managed to take photos that I simple couldn't get with my APSC Nikon because I don't have the lenses with enough zoom. I tend to not take the zoom past 900mm unless the subject is close as the image quality does decrease as you point out.

For the price, this camera seems loaded with features (massive zoom, RAW, filter threads, 60 second exposures). But like with any camera, there are going to be a few cons. You have captured many great photos with this camera, one of my favorites in this video is the night shot of the monument at 5:48. Seems like a fantastic travel camera when you don't want to lug your entire kit around with you. Great stuff and a really balanced review Andrew for anyone who is looking into a camera such as this.

Thanks for watching Paul. For hobbyists, travellers and occasional photographers it is a great camera. Sure it's not going to worry top end gear. But for those getting a first camera after a phone or a basic point and shoot then I think it's a good choice and has plenty of learning in it before people make the step to a more expensive camera.

Been there, done that...and it is my go to camera for traveling. A full frame Sony Alpha II is in the dust bin now because of the weight and shortcomings for travelling photography when you really need that super zoom lens to capture and compose things as you go around with much less effort.

That's a rather fetching portrait Andrew - good modelling mate :) That FZ1000 will get a lot of play this Christmas I imagine, nice purchase. A well rounded review, I've seen a load of great images from you with the FZ82 that belie it's small sensor and limitations.

Cheers Dave it will keep the kids off the fire! Dave F did several shots for his 'Men with Beards' project - this one was a happy smiley one rather than the serious moody monochrome images. Yes I'm hoping to give the FZ1000 a whirl over the Christmas break and see how it sits between the FZ82 and the Nikon D3300. With the mic input and articulating screen it will probably be the camera I end up using for vlogging. The FZ82 is too handy to have around so it won't be going anywhere. Next expenditure is a wide angle lens for the Nikon I think. Thanks for watching and congratulations on breaking the 1k subs with your channel.

@@lyndapassey2752 I don't Lynda, I went for the FZ1000 when I bought another camera. Sadly it isn't splash proof either but has a bigger sensor. The FZ300/330 is highly praised by those who own them as the lens aperture is constant through the zoom range so it works better in low light. The zoom is great on the fz82 though but it depends if you were wanting to photograph animals and birds or not. If you don't need that level of zoom then the fz300 may be the better choice.

Very good video Andrew , pretty much the same as my thoughts on the fz82, at first I wasn’t that impressed but it won me round eventually.I’m now about to jump into a Fuji x system and looked at trading in the fz. The offer of £100 wasn’t bad as I only paid 199 new nearly 3 years ago. But in all honesty as a second camera to throw in my bag on a daily basis I’d be a fool to let it go so it’s staying. I also want to thank you because your videos have enabled me to enjoy it more and I’m still learning to use some of the features on it even after all this time .
@AndrewWaltonPhotography

Thanks for watching Robb. That sounds like a good P'EX price but like you I'd decided to hang onto my FZ82 - mine looks a little worse for wear after an incident with sun cream that removed most of the print off the buttons, and despite the heavy use it has had it works perfectly. I'll still be creating more videos for the FZ82 as I'm not quite finished with it just yet. The Fuji is going to be a nice camera to move too, fantastic colours and film simulation pre-sets although I think you might miss the zoom of the FZ82!

Andrew good review I have the 82 and the 330 and use them both for video and photo's in 4k mode both do very very well i used them for filming moor birds in nesting season and the quality is great and I think this is were the cameras shine, The 330 has a better lens which is 2.8 right through the lens range and better build quality but the 82 has a better zoom but a tripod is a must with both camera's, Of course there are better camera's but the flexibility with the long and wide lens make these camera's very valuable, The photo's are harder to nail and i found i had a lot of none keepers at the start but with practice and getting to know the camera's you can achieve some great images.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you have said, especially with that last statement about getting to know the camera. This is essential to get good images out of the FZ82. I’ve had mine just over 12 months. During lockdown when out for walks I was taking lots of pictures on my phone but they didn’t always turn out how I wanted. So I started to look at cameras and spent an age deciding as I don’t have a lot of money and didn’t want to spend several hundred pounds on a camera that ultimately I couldn’t use. The FZ82 has been great for me a I’ve managed to get some decent shots out of it and despite its limitations I’ve been more than happy with it. Hey Duncan, which phone did you use? I bought the camera a couple of weeks ago but I think my Google Pixel 6 Pro takes much better pics. Lumix images are not so sharp and bright I think. Hi, I live in the US, originally from the UK and have worked in 6 US National Parks in the lower 48 states. This camera is fine for that type of application and all cameras have their drawbacks even the flagship Canon R5 with a 4oomm L lens. The big cameras are heavy, cumbersome, take a while to get to your face and shoot away where as these smaller units are faster, more discreet, lighter and easier to handle. Grant you the resolution is not the same but I have pulled some nice files out of the camera here ( FZ80 ) and I was impressed with the TIME LAPSE 4K CONVERSION. Long exposure on a 1-2/3 sensor is always a challenge but hey it still delivers. You can get some nice calendar and post cards out of this device.

I agree Peter. For the price point this camera is at few can touch it for the spec and versatility it offers. It's great for travel and hiking. I also have an FZ1000 which feels a great deal heavier and has a shorter zoom. It does have better image quality with it's one inch sensor but I still rate the FZ80/FZ82 for it's all round performance and usability.

It has certainly served you well Andrew. You've had some cracking shots out of it. I didn't realise it had such a small sensor - I guess that really helps with its perceived reach though. What do the images look like when you extract them from the video? I often find I get blurring, when I try to take a shot from video. A Very througher good review! Is the SD card reader on the bottom? I do think if a Pentax Q can fit it on the side any bigger camera should be able too. If you shoot on a tripod, it can be a pain to remove it every time you wish to view your photos. I would also say the other con is reduced depth of field as an old DSLR or micro four thirds camera with kit lens can offer far more. Often at a lower price (under £80 used at the low end) will offer far more subject separation. If someone was getting into photography the reduced aperture control especially on the telephoto end means you don't gain that experience,
@AndrewWaltonPhotography
@AndrewWaltonPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the card slot is located with the battery under the camera. I've not found it a massive issue as I tend to shoot on a 32gb card so don't need to change it often. I agree that the DOF is reduced with a camera like this because of the small sensor but for someone wanting an all in one camera it is good for the money. Here in the UK a used one with 2 year warranty can be picked up for between £140 and £185 from CEX (UK). Thanks for watching.

Hi Andrew. Cheers for the review. We bought a FZ80 camera for my son who is into car photography and this we thought would be a good step up from his phone. Well featured for its price etc. Sadly it has been quite a disappointment especially for us who are not professional photographers. We had hoped that in full auto (idiot) mode we would get photos at least as good as my son's phone or mine but no. The photos are always grainy/noisy. Not the point and shoot we were after. It may be an ISO thing but now we are getting into the technical stuff we were hoping to avoid. Another English bloke has hours of info on how to use this camera properly which i think says it all. I am going to get in touch with a mate who is a professional photographer and see if he can help otherwise my son is staying with his phone. Bit of a shame really. Cheers.
@AndrewWaltonPhotography
@AndrewWaltonPhotography Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I agree that in auto mode, the camera will often take the path of least resistance and raise the ISO in order to maintain shutter speed and aperture. It forgets that the image stabilisation is very good, so you can run very low shutter speeds and still get good images handheld. I tend to cap the ISO at ISO 400 (I did a #shorts video on capping the ISO, which might be of benefit. ) Phones are coming on all the time. For a wide shot of a static subject, they will give most of my compact and bridge cameras a run for their money (the software algorithms inside phones that improve the image quality is something the camera industry should have looked at for compact and bridge cameras). However, they do fall down when you want to zoom in. My Samsung S22 advertised its 3x optical zoom like it was something amazing, but compared to a camera, it is a bit pathetic, really. Is you son shooting static vehicles or motorsport? If it is static, then I would try and shoot at ISO 80 on bright days and use aperture priority mode. For moving subjects, use shutter priority mode but you might have to use higher ISO in order to maintain a higher shutter speed (alternatively, try the sports mode in the scene mode menu). I hope this helps. Andrew.

FZ80 is the most suitable camera for a travel or when you have to cover long or short range targets, because people does forget that the macro mode in this camera is really fine and the 20mm focal is a great feature. However, it's suitable to change settings on contrast and brightness and NEVER use the automatic modes, that produce the exposure of a cheap phone.

Thank you for a great video. I learned a lot about my little camera. I'm a beginner. I've only used the intelligent auto setting. I was debating about whether to get a better camera but I realized I have to learn all of the features of this one. I'm looking for a video on how to set this camera up to take photos of birds. Do you have one?
@AndrewWaltonPhotography
@AndrewWaltonPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Barbara, whilst a more expensive camera with even more expensive lenses can give better results there are still ways to get good results out of the FZ80/FZ82 especially if you have been shooting in auto mode. If you can learn now how to use the camera in Aperture/Shutter Priority and Manual then you will be a better photographer when you do make that upgrade. I don't have a specific video on setting up for bird photography but I would suggest using shutter priority mode (S mode on the dial). If you watch my Bird Photography II video, those images were taken in shutter priority mode. Where possible with the FZ80/82 it is preferable to keep your ISO set to as low as is possible (as lower ISO values result in less noise/grain in the photos). When shooting in Shutter Priority, the thumbwheel on the back of the camera controls the shutter speed. If you find that the images are blurred then you will have to increase the shutter speed. If the image look too dark at the correct speed then you can either try altering the ISO (upwards) or the cameras exposure compensation. If this sounds a little to daunting at first there are a couple of scene modes, 22: Freeze Animal Motion and 23: Clear Sports Shot which might help you get some suitable photos until you feel more confident with the camera in Shutter Priority. I hope this helps.

I had one for a couple years and enjoyed taking awesome pictures of the moon. However, other subjects were hit and miss, eventually mostly miss due to soft focus. It's interesting that you prefer the earlier model. Most of the specs are identical bar the 4k video ( 1080i for the fz70) and the extra 2 megapixels the sensor has to provide on the fz80. I wonder if 16.1 megapixels that the fz70 produces is the better compromise? The sensor is a tiny one, so the pixels will be a tiny bit larger on the older camera. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂.

very informative video. How does the FZ82 do with flying birds for still images?
@AndrewWaltonPhotography
@AndrewWaltonPhotography Жыл бұрын
It's no replacement for a DSLR or mirrorless system for fast moving birds. I have photographed a cormorant flying along side a boat and also raptors at a display (IE you know where the bird is heading.) Wild birds are less predictable and the contrast based focus system can make it harder to lock onto your subject. You could use 4k photo mode and extract a still that way, it works well but the images are only 8mp. If you are a serious bird photographer then a DSLR/mirrorless camera and an expensive zoom lens is the way forward. For those of us who just shoot for fun then it's an ok camera. Check out the KZbin channel, Simon Watts Wild Presentations, he has used the FZ82 to great effect for bird photography.

This may be something as simple as dirt getting trapped in the telescopic parts of the lens. Try extending the zoom and blowing any dust away. If the message still persists, then it might be worth trying a factory reset (I did do a short video on this). After that, if the fault persists, it is probably best asking a Panasonic Service Centre to look at it.

Hi Blue Yorks, you probably won't notice any difference between the 16 v 18 megapixels in still images. The wifi is really handy as you can use the Panasonic Image app to control the camera (focus, zoom, shutter, [ as well asrecord video, and transfer images]) - ideal if you want to take photos of a subject close to the ground (I demonstrated this in my lensball video where it really helped) - the touchscreen is also really handy especially for pinpointing focus. The 4k is handy to have but I still tend to shoot 1080p. 4k photo is another feature which can help you get a shot - you can shoot a section of video and then save individual frames as jpegs. Handy for action shots - there is a downside in that those images are only 8 megapixel stills. Thanks for watching.

Hi Sherri, if a factory reset doesn't fix it then there maybe a more serious issue with the camera. I have heard of other people's cameras having developed a similar issue, some have been sorted out under warranty. Sadly electronics do seem to have a short lifespan these days. Try the reset and if that doesn't solve it then it maybe time to send it off for repair. Most camera repairers offer a free quotation for the repairs so you can decide if it is worth the expense or to buy another camera.

I bought mine one used almost three years ago for 130 euro. You can't go wrong for that price. Image quality is acceptable (cell phone like), but in low light situations results are very mediocre. Cranking up the ISO only makes it worse with more noise. Also for bird photography it's not the best camera as the aperture is quite slow. But I really love the portability and it's a very complete camera for that amount of money. I also use it for macro photography which it does surprisingly well.

It's a good little camera for the money, as you say and I've said it does have some flaws. For bird photography that's mainly the contrast based auto focus if shooting moving and the noise caused by the ISO issues. Static birds in trees or waterfowl are good to shoot with this camera though. It is a good camera to learn photography on, ideal for beginners.

@alanrees4837 I tend to stick with SanDisk cards (ultra or extreme pro) a class 1 c10, 120mb/s card is my fastest (ultra). This is probably overkill for photos, but it is handy if you want to shoot 4k video. Prices for these cards used to be high, but my local supermarket was selling a 32gb card for around £12 (128gb was £20). I prefer to buy a couple of 32gb cards rather than one 64gb card just in case the card fails. If you split your holiday photos over two cards and one fails, you haven't lost all of your images. I'd recommend a rugged card safe - I have a beeway branded one from Amazon (also sold under the JJC brand), it wasn't expensive (about £8) and will keep your cards safe. @AndrewWaltonPhotography Жыл бұрын
There are several things to consider. The FZ82 will film in 4k 30fps which is good but so will most mobile phones theses days. The advantage over a phone is of course the zoom lens. If you are filming for longer than 30 minutes at a time then this camera will split the footage into two files (which can be sorted in editing software later). A dedicated video camera may be more suitable (4k camcorders from Panasonic and Sony are available) and you get a zoom plus unlimited recording and greater battery life. The FZ82 has a small sensor so it's not fantastic in low light - would you be shooting in low light, inside stations etc? Outdoors on a bright day then the FZ82 will do a good job. It very much depends on your budget, If you can stretch to a FZ1000 with a one inch sensor of one of the Lumix G m4/3 series cameras then they will give you better results. What are you currently using?

As i film on my iphone the microphone can be abit glitchy, if the microphone is decent on the fz82 then it should be ok. You have helped enormosuyl though, as the grainy iso in low light has dissauded me. Can you tel me where the little windnoise baffles came from? It makes me MAD that even an expenisve vid camera films are ruined by wind noise. Yoiu'd think they would have a button to press to "filter out" that frequency. Thanks!

Hi Steve, thanks for watching. Sadly there is no mic jack on the camera so you are stuck with the onboard mics ( I think I mentioned it in the cons of the camera). However, there is a Wind Noise Canceller setting on page 5/5 in the video functions in the camera's menu. The wind 'muffs' are Rycote Micro Windjammers, I got mine from Amazon but I can't see them listed at the moment. The FZ330 is similar to the FZ82, more expensive, but has an external mic port, and has a faster lens (although with half the zoom) so slightly better in low light.

@@AndrewWaltonPhotography MY sincere apologies! I just found an email that you replied to me above on 21st January! I am so sorry not to have responded. Appalling of me. I was a bit pre-occupied as I was off on a once in a lifetime trip to The Arctic Circle; hence me wanting a decent new camera to record the Aurora Borealis etc. What with all the other purchases (mostlyy thermal!) and other prep I missed your email. Sorry. In th end I bought the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 mk 2. I was (am!) still trying to figure it out, but did manage a few shots of the Aurora. Your review here nonetheless helped me in my decision, you deserved my acknowledgement at least. So here it is, a trifle overdue. Thank you very much indeed. Contritely, Steve .

I just bought one of these for $260. I'm an architect, not a photographer. I can compose a photo as I do a lot of 3d imagery. I bought it purely for that fact that I find it a faff trying to use an iPhone taking pictures on site. I'd much rather have a a real camera on a tripod and either use the rear screen or use the app.

Bought one a couple of years ago when the image stabilisation broke on the Sony bridge camera (HX400V) I'd had about 5 years and wasn't worth fixing. By comparison this Panasonic has been a very poor choice of replacement. Shooting anywhere near the furthest optical zoom produces very soft, noisy images - even in low ISO modes without using digital zoom, and the image stabilisation for video is very wobbly - especially noticeable if you're shooting a stable object - even on a tripod. Sure it has a lot of interesting features - slo-mo and timelapse are fun to give a go, but the very basic thing of capturing a decently sharp image or video in good colour is simply beyond this camera. Bridge cameras a generation or two older are much, much better at that. From time to time I put together video montages of my best nature photography, not a single one will have come out of this camera. The only thing attractive about it was the price, in hindsight it would have been wiser to spend the extra £80-£100 on the Sony/Nikon/Canon options.

I've got to say I've not had chance to experience the HX400V - it must have been a good camera. I've been happy with the IS within the FZ82. I'd agree the images at full zoom of distant subjects are softer, anything past 900mm and the sharpness tails off. I tend to shoot RAW and reduce the amount of noise in the images in post. Like any small sensor camera good light is essential to get good images out of it.

This camera (lumix) is twice more expensive than my Canon. Is it worth money for me ? I mean will i see a difference and upgrade ? A good point, I have no experience of your Canon, but it very much depends if you need to get closer to your subject. I see your Canon has zoom plus which I presume is a digital zoom. At full reach the zoom plus reaches the same distance as the FZ82 does optically. I hope this helps.

I'm also a bird photographer and "upgraded" from my Canon SX730HS to the FZ80 purely because I wanted a viewfinder. And it was a complete game changer. That said, I find the Lumix more complex to use ... more interwoven settings is my personal gripe, wherein changing any given setting can interfere with some other setting in unexpected ways. With the exception of the Lumix's viewfinder, I prefer the Canon.

I like to take 'point and shoot' photos and videos of boats, planes, cars, etc.. when picking up, if i accidently swipe a finger on the touch screen I've changed 15 settings and lose the shot! or I hit one of the 20 damn buttons and wheels all over the camera then have to stop (miss the shot) and go re-set the camera for 2 hrs.

Creo q la fz-82 no tiene rival en su relación precio/calidad. Su único inconveniente serio en mi opinión es el tamaño del sensor, pero si tener un sensor de 1" significa perder capacidad de zoom prefiero quedarme con el sensor de la fz-82.

How long does the battery last from full charge when recording continuously in 4K mode?
@AndrewWaltonPhotography
@AndrewWaltonPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
I've not tested this myself but I understand that the camera will shoot 4K (30fps/100MBps) for up to 15 minutes. I'm not sure if the battery is exhausted at this point or just a limited reached in the camera. If you need to run 4k for hours then a 4k camcorder may be a solution.

@@AdiPullen if you want to shoot 4k video go for something with a high write speed marked U3, with a video speed greater than 30mb/s. I hour of 4k footage is about 45gb so the larger the card the better. For photos it's more about the write speed, I have 45/95/120mb/s cards and I've not noticed much difference as they're all faster than the camera. Brand wise I have SanDisk, Toshiba SD cards. I recently got a PNY SD card with a used camcorder and that seems to be reliable too.

Nikon p600 vz Lumix Fz80. ?
@AndrewWaltonPhotography
@AndrewWaltonPhotography Жыл бұрын
When I bought my FZ82 (almost 3 years ago now), the Lumix was cheaper and had a better specification apart from the fixed rear screen. The FZ80/82 can shoot RAW, the Nikon only shoots jpeg. The FZ80/82 can shoot 4k and 1080p video, the Nikon only offers 1080i video (upscaled 720p). Those factors plus being £150 cheaper made the Panasonic seem the logical choice. Since then I believe the p600 is no longer on sale here in the UK.
