Thanks to the negative reviews this camera is now available for 500€ with the kit lens and the tripod. That's a very competitive price point: 200€ less than the the Sony Z-V1. Panasonic also released updates that solve some of the issues with AF.

I think Panasonic’s marketing department goofed by emphasizing the vlogging (which the ZV1 does better) and not pushing the general content creation in a tiny package (which the G100 does better than the ZV1). You cannot beat interchangeable lenses and a bigger sensor when it comes time to getting creative. Try putting a vintage lens on the ZV1, for example. The G100 can do true 1:1 macro, stop motion animation, shift lenses, long telephoto, ultra-wide and fisheye. The ZV1 is a one trick pony while the G100 has lots of tricks up its sleeve. Sadly, Panasonic failed to communicate that in any effective way. I love it, but not for most vlogging.

The GX80 has the same kit lens and has 5 axis stabilization. I would guess the IQ is easily on a par with the G100, except the GX80 is not really for vlogging, but it can now be had for peanuts.. Great reviews by the way.

Why would Vloggers want less focus, less stablisation, less video quality, and no headphone output? Is this a late April Fools joke?

@EugeneLazin
@EugeneLazin 4 жыл бұрын
@@TsvetanVLife It's not a joke. It's basically a smaller G7 with newer sensor. And G7 was used a lot as a vlogging camera. Want IBIS, go for heavier and more expensive G90 even G9. Also, with better lens this camera should work way better as a vlogging tool. And I think that this audio system that they have makes headphone output redundant. Because camera control levels automatically so you can record video without monitoring the audio.

It’s pretty comparable with the Canon M50 for the money. Face tracking video auto focus is actually pretty good on this one, and the digital stabilisation is one of the better ones, plenty of stabilised Pany lenses. It is what is, for the money it’s fine. If you want higher specs, there’s the G9...

Hi Gordon, thanks for the nice video. Always enjoying those. As for the camera I actually quite like the feature set of the G100. As an entry level G camera it makes sense to me. Viewfinder and swively screen are brighter and larger than the one of the only competitor EM10 III. The micro setup is great, if you are an occasional video guy and don't want to buy and fiddle around with an external mic. The body is very small and solid enough. Of course a G90 or G9 can do "more" and/or "better". If my GM5 would ever break I might buy this as a replacement.

Spatial audio and tripod are very interesting. Just checking the specs, the battery is the same as the LX100, and the US kit already(!) has $50 off the tripod kit so it's effectively free. The G80-series also works with the tripod, so that would be cheaper, with less 4k crop and IBIS - albeit without the aspect ratio control or the high-res low-reflection sensor.

6:53 the white balance is greenish as Gordon looks a little green. Also when Gordon rotates, you can see the image stabilizer jumping the background so it's trying to hold onto the background lock which is a hugely annoying thing with electronic stabilization and movies. The 3 mics seem to only help in the behind-the-camera mode.

It seems like it's in a bit of a no-mans-land, It's a good experiment of a new mic system and innovation is always welcomed, however, I feel it's not a sufficient USP to get it flying off the shelves. The lack of IBIS is understandable but I think too large of a flaw. The Panasonic G7 was my first tentative step into 4k and the m43 system and I could make up for the shortfalls for the most part with a gimbal and my years of using manual focus, I've even used it on professional gigs as the picture quality with good lighting has been that good. I hope m43 brings out something soon to shock the industry such as TOF focus, however, I think the R6 will probably get the shock title due to price point but certainly, it's an interesting time.

The G100 is not as good a vlogging camera but possibly better all round with the interchangeable lens and larger sensor. But that will set you back more when buying other lenses . I prefer the portability of the ZV-1 with the focusing system. Stabilisation, front recording light and general simplicity. I don’t use my canon m50 to vlog with anymore and it’s now my still camera that I may vlog with but it won’t be with me as often as the Zv-1

Since this is a video camera, they should have a) use the 16MP sensor that does not crop in 4k, b) do not invest any money and real estate in a EVF, c) definitely, definitely let the IBIS in. If I'm a vlogger I cannot think of a single reason to buy this. And if I'm not a vlogger - the same.

I would buy the panasonic even though I dislike the loss of that good IBIS they have in other cams. The reason is that it far more flexible. Sure you get a soso kitlens at least when it comes to speed. But you can add a Sigma F1.4 56 mm and it is a good portrait cam. You can add well a 20 mm f1.7 which is still tiny. A 42,5 mm f1.7 Panasonic is a very small good portrait lens. And we can go on and on an on. The IQ out of these combinations are just a lot better than Sony's kit lens will ever get you. Also an EVF or not is a big one. With the full sun an EVF is always nicer but also for action shooting (stills). Too bad you did not test how well this DFD works wiht action photo's but if it is as good the G9 than it is very capable. COmpared to a Em1.2 or a G90 it is also a lot smaller and a but lighter.

The Sony wins hands down. For a B camera or one where autofocus for product and moving host, the DFD is not good. I like the bigger sensor, but that is nullified by the slower Lens. Missed opportunity there due to costs. $50.00 more per camera for at least an F2.0 or F1.7. There is really no excuse. The G85 which still floating around is a great camera on the cheap new or used. @@ourtvchannel phase detect is not a panacea too. I saw a lot of footage shoot with fuji that has the same autofocus problems as Panasonic but with on sensor PDAF. Only Sony can do phase detect almost ideally. All other camera manufacturers have some half-assed version of it. Glad you like the ZV-1. Personally, I will never buy another camera that doesn't have a viewfinder. I tried it once and was very frustrated every time I was shooting in bright sunlight. I love to review pictures in the viewfinder to check focus, etc...You cannot see a back screen of most cameras in bright sunlight. I like a lot of features that the G100 has. I am very glad to hear they have improved the autofocus.

This may be the first non-Sony/DJI camera I’ve bought in the last 4 years.. I have several MFT lenses for our Inspire’s X5 that would work on this body. Super compact. My RX100 V is super pocketable but this could fill in between it and our full frame Sony’s. Thanks Gordon!

Thé sound thing is a winner, but autofocus is still not so good. I think camera makers are in cahoots to never give cameras under $1500 that has excellent everything. I am pretty sure that they disable features just to push us to upgrade. They should make their big bucks on lenses, not cameras as much.

Interesting audio options. (I just wish you had tested the surround mode by turning the camera all the way round while talking). The “tracking” mode certainly didn’t do a very good job of tracking you: I don’t know about the audio level, but the high frequencies were dulled a lot as you panned to the side. I could be wrong, but that didn’t seem to be as bad in the “front” mode. By the way, I did notice your hoarse voice - especially in the outdoor scene. You also didn’t look quite as happy as your normal self. I hope you’re alright. Best wishes, Gordon!

Kai is dressed in shorts for his video Gordon is dressed for the artic. Must be British weather. What I find interesting is that with the crops the G100 ‘s sensor is no bigger than the Sony. Then couple this with the much faster lens and the Sony is looking very good. I think I’ll stick with my G85 - better battery life, IBIS, no savage crops.

I would buy the Sony, The autofocus system is far better. Having an interchangeable lens is not an advantage if you intend to use the camera for vlogging. The Panasonic does have one major advantage: the ability to record vertical videos, but that could be solved with a firmware update, if Sony wanted. I would go for the Sony!

The dead cat option on the ZV1 negates any advantage of the G100 mics. But the biggest reasons not to consider the Panasonic are the lousy cropped 4K (with 4K crop it becomes almost identical to a 1 inch sensor), the ridiculous 10 minute recording limit for 4K, and the slow kit lens (getting a fast wide lens will double the cost and weight of the camera). Product mode, slow motion, longer recording times, built in ND, and that fast lens makes the ZV1 first choice. It is not even close. Panasonic fail with this disappointing offering.

Another m50 killer that brings up "wait a second, it does that and doesn't do this". There are always things that force you to hold on to your miraculous m50. It amazes me that Panasonic can't get it together with autofocus. How can it take many years to still not have it right. It's not Technology that started last week. Just hire a smart guy who knows stuff. Simple. I think the solution to our dilemma is to buy 2 or 3 cameras to be able to handle everything and every scenario and need. But they all must have great autofocus.
