I just received my camera the 28th and hadn't read your review yet. It's a very useful review that helped me get started with the camera. And I must say my experiences with the camera so far completely conquer with yours. It's an addictive camera. I was in great doubt about getting this camera because it would mean stop using my full frame system that I used for years. I tried Sony A-series but I felt the same way you do. Not my cup of tea. Clearly designed by brilliant technicians, but not by photographers. But his camera clearly is. It fits like a glove. I was a bit worried about the image quality. But again I was positively surprised. Yes, there is a bit more noise at high ISO's, but nothing terrible. And who cares. The image quality is very good and more than enough for me. And finally Panasonic got the color science right. I don't have to tweak the colors like I had to do with earlier Panasonic models. I'm a happy photographer. Thnx for the helpful review ... Oh, I just got rid of all my full frame gear ...

I have used MFT cameras for 10 years. Just got a G9, and am enjoying learning the new features. Thanks for the detailed user review. You questioned the value of video shutter speeds below 1/framerate. This allows video recording of static scenes in very low light, such as a church interior, without needing high ISO.

Brilliant. Best reviewer in Europe. Cannot agree more about the closing conclusion, for me Canon and Pana are the most fun and organic to use . An extension of us. They trashed 6dmarkii and when I saw the latest video from Jared Polin, filmed on it, I thought I never saw a better color and contrast in video from any dslr . But back to this, I think you are exaggerating when you say A9 "destroys " this in sensor. That used to be back in the days. Nowadays the best micro four thirds cameras have better dxo scores than 5dmarkii or Nikon D700. The best cameras are in the 90 -100 points scores and the second wave are in the 80 points range. G9 is in the 81-83 range in my opinion

10:30 regarding the spot AE and focus at different points. The only way to do this is to use AE lock with the backbutton for spot AE first, and then focus using the shutter button. obviously using the same spot, but turning the camera to what you want to focus on after locking AE where you want to control exposure..

I had been waiting for the Sony a7R III to finally come out and was all set to buy when I heard about this G9 so I did a lot of research on this camera, saw a lot of reviews in the early stages after its release and I was so impressed I took a leap of faith and pre ordered 2 bodies. After watching your review, and before I have even received the G9's I am even more confident now that I made the right choice. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this and for the excellent work you put into it. Absolutely love your work. Cheers!

That's the camera I wanted and was waiting for but the Olympus em1.2 was a better choice for me because of the phase auto-focus instead of dfd. I use mostly Olympus pro lens that I prefer to Panasonic equivalent and the em1.2 auto focus work well with either Olympus or Panasonic lenses while the g9 dfd works well only with Panasonic lenses ans even there the em1.2 seems better based on test with the g85 I had and the gh5. I have better performance using a Panasonic lens on a Olympus body than using a Olympus lens on a Panasonic body so decided to go for the em1.2 which I like a lot so far.

I learned a lot from your video, and i was really happy about the back button focusing, i used to use this on my Canon 7 D mark 2, it was great to use that function. Once again ,thank you for a great video clip. Regards Joe.

This Panasonic G9 is a great camera for sure ! Thanks for this very thorough review, I always really appreciate your reviews and this one doesn't disappoint. I would love to get this camera but I think I won't even use 10% of all its features. I hope Panasonic soon releases a successor to the G8/G80/G85 with some nice features from the G9 (20mp sensor, 6k photo, bigger evf, better jpeg engine/color/AF but without 60fps/20fps burst, joystick, wheel, less buttons...) in a smaller form factor and at a more affordable price (around 1k€).

Thank you Ivan for your thoughtful and logical review. I shoot mainly with my Leica Q for everyday photography so your closing remarks resonates with me. At this point I am looking for an interchangeable lens camera in addition to my Leica and I'm considering the Panasonic G9 and the Fuji XH-1 for light video work but mainly shooting wildlife, sports and auto racing. I would appreciate your thoughts. Fuji X cameras are familiar to me as I have owned XT-1, XT-2 and X70.

Thanks for figuring out how to move the ' playback ' to the right side. Were there any unique steps to do this ? My left hand was injured at birth, so for me I would constantly need to reach over with my right hand to activate playback. Where you able to make the original playback button into some other feature ? Have you thought of creating a ' separate ' button into being your focus ? Besides other advantages this would solve the overly sensitive O. E. shutter. I will do this once I get my G9. I'm now using the Pani Fz2500 bridge camera - 1 in. sensor, 24 ~ 480 zoom which, do to it's versatility, I will keep. Understanding my way around the Fz I hope will help in making a quicker learning curve onto the G9. Your video's are well done & thanks again.

I've been eyeing and considering the G9 as an upgrade to my G7. This video reinforces my thoughts to get the G9. The only other consideration is to see what the rumored GH5s is all about. If it is $2500 USD, I will be buying the G9 at $1700 USD. I just purchased the Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 lens. I need to find some money in my budget. Thanks for your review. I appreciate your assessment and opinions.

I am enjoying the G9 and what it can do. The usability is so good with the button layout and My Menu is excellent. The EVF does have a little pincushion distortion but I've gotten used to it. Also what appeared to be an overly bright EVF at first is now "just right". Incredible how the human mind adjusts.

I have the 12-35mm f/2.8 and 35-100mm f/2.8 lenses purchased prior to the Nocticron. I still like the versatility of the zoom lenses but no question the Nocticron is super good. I did a photo shoot the other day with just the Nocticron and I found I was able to cope with it for photos and videos.

@Kassyni Savior, I could have used 400mm when I shot the moon the other day. 100mm just isn't enough. I used the High Resolution Mode to shoot the moon - then I cropped to still get a decent resolution image which I posted to social media. I've shot birds and animals but the longer end of your 100-400mm lens would be ideal.

Product quality consistency can be ensured by the manufacturing process which is highly automated for most elements and parts. However, final assembly is often done by humans. And quality control is a human labor intensive step. Fortunately, I've had reasonably good experience with Lumix products so far (G7, G9, 3 lenses). As for camera firmware - like any software, there are bugs which get released into the field. My G9 periodically hangs while doing WiFi transfer of images from camera to computer. When this happens, I have to remove the battery as well as the SD card to "reset" the camera to work properly with that SD card. Yesterday, it happened again and also ended up deleting the image file on the SD card. Fortunately, it was just experimental stuff I was doing. For photo shoot outings, I use USB attached transfer since it would typically take too long over WiFi.

Thankyou for a really interesting and enjoyable review. I can see that people are a bit skeptical about the size of the camera but its sounds like that improves the ergonomics. I can really relate to this after finding my gx8 was the first camera that made me feel like getting out of bed in the morning to go and take pictures. Perhaps Im just lazy but its good to be in zen and want to practice. The innovation looks really interesting. At the mo I have the 12-35mm 2.8 mark 1. Is it worth upgrading to a mark 2 or the 12-60 to combine with the camera re stabilisation and focusing. It also sounded like the hi-res mode was something you considered useful rather than a gimmick. Same question again, would lens choice a difference. Thankyou again for taking the time to put this together and share your experience. S

No focus pull for you! (or anyone else on G9) ;) I guess Panasonic wants to clearly distinguish G9 and GH5 and I don't blame them for that. Overall AF in video is snappier on G9 though so I think a simple touch screen-finger-focus-pull might be enough for casual use.

My Em1.2 like I said when you reviewed it does not have the problems you decribed. I wonder if you got a bad sample (which I always find a lame excuse actually, but since I have no other possibility...). First of all i do not even own a steady tripod, just a 100 euro manfrotto and even the 19 euro mini from Man. They worked very well and I have shot in the field with 8 bft winds and with the 100 euro manfrotto pointed at both leaves and brick houses it was clear the brick houses were still sharp 50% of the time. And to add to that: these wee long exposures 4 seconds or so which I proved by the clouds which were like a 30 second exposure...The Em1.2 in my book is very good for landscape, still life. Also with some movement like leaves and surely water, but not with people or so that move in it.To be clear: I would advise almost everyone to go for the G9 since the handling of the Em1.2 like my EPL5 is well...horrible. But that is personal. I love the interfacing with Panasonic cams. I really dislike it with Oly.

Thanks for the reply, that is good to know. I read in the DPR forum and found a similar report from someone that handles the camera in store about the pincushion effects. www.dpreview.com/forums/post/60549465

Hi, I really enjoy your channel. Since you test a lot of equipment maybe you can help me with my decision. I´m currently thinking about changing system from Panasonic but I´m not sure. Currently I use the GX8 with 15mm Leica and 35-100 F2.8 and shoot almost everything from landscapes, portait, Family, street etc. and also want to try some wildlife. I´d like to expand to at the wide angle and the telephoto-side. So far I´m not really happy with the high ISO Performance when shooting Family/Event indoor and also long exposures at night/astro looks not too great. But everything else works fine for me and I´m happy with camera handling. Especially weight and size of camera and lenses is really great. Do you think G9 will give me better results or should I consider switching to Fuji or even Sony? I think the your point of enjoying the use will be very important to me.

For proper high ISO performance only full frame will do. Canon and Nikon are big and heavy. Sony is smaller but lenses are (mostly) big and handling is not my cup of tea. If I were to buy FF from scratch now I would be tempted by D750 + 3 primes, 20/1.8, 35/1.8 and 85/1.8. These are high quality, not so big/heavy and acceptable in price. 20 would be nice for wide field astro and interesting family shots perspective, 35 as a good all round lens and 85 as a classic portrait lens. All of them at f/1.8 on full frame and in low light = love. Don't know what your budget is but try not to sell Panasonic stuff, use both systems (whatever you buy Canon/Nikon/Sony) and see what works best for you. You might want to go in general direction of FF + primes for low light and ultimate IQ and Panasonic + zooms for daylight, tripod landscapes and convinence. For example new panny 8-18 is by all accounts magnificent wide lens and weighs only 315g. It takes filters and is weather sealed - would be perfect on your GX8. Just don't overthink it, you will never find perfect gear for all occasions.

Thanks for that quick reply. I was really hoping that there may be one System to fit it all but Splitting in two Systems is liekly the least compromise. I had an an eye on the 8-18 for quite some time and would be a great Combo with 35-100 and gx8 as compact and versatile kit. I probably would sell then the 15 mm 1.7. The pricing on the d750 is getting attractive now., but the combo you mentioned might cost me still 2500 Euro which is a lot and does not include the 8-18mm. I will have the Fuji XT2 for one week on loan soon and get my Hands on. I know it would always be a compromise but I want to check if I love it and if it be enough love to compromise some potential better IQ. But I know myself and I will likely desire to get full frame anyway. You right, I should not think to much and I follow your advice from the Focus shift video and drink a beer while enjoying life!

What do you think about the d500 and what would you recommend as APS-C Nikon lenses?
@Camerahoarders
@Camerahoarders 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I too wish one system would be good for everything, but it's hardly the case (unless you shoot only one photo genre). Can you loan some full frame for a few days to play with it? Once you start using ISO 12800-25600 on regular basis it will be hard to go back to crop. X-T2 is really nice cam but I'm not sure it is that much better than micro 43 to justify having two systems with (relatively) similar performance. I haven't used D500 but that is hardcore sports camera. I got the feeling you are after ultimate IQ, not burst or AF tracking (what is where D500 shines).

Anyways, try X-T2 and see if you are happy with the results. The main problem today is that it is hard to choose... there is just so much good gear available.

A tutorial on setting up that 'drug mode' would be useful, if it isn't mentioned anywhere, it would be good to know how to do it?

Hm, I'm not sure what you mean by drug mode? Red night time LCD maybe?

Camerahoarders sorry (auto correct disaster). You mentioned a way to slow down the frame rate (I believe it was) and get an effect like being drunk (it was at a fair or similar event, all blurry and odd looking). A more detailed look at how you got that would be interesting.
@Camerahoarders
@Camerahoarders 7 жыл бұрын
Oh that! Well it fairly simple. If exposure time is longer than selected 1/fps recording setting, each "long exposure frame" will be spread over more than one individual frames in video. In manual mode just dial exposure time as low as you want it. Some cameras allow that, some don't.

Camerahoarders I am just waiting on a G9 so I hadn't heard of this feature before. It is something fun I can try out. Thank you for pointing it out...

G9 + 12-60 f2.8-4 or 1000€ more expensive om-1 + 12-40 f2.8? What would you suggest? Would like to focus more on video part besides photography. Thank you

For Om-1+lens price you can get Panasonic s5 II +20-60mm which is superior camera in most ways. Otherwise G9 is hard to beat at current prices.

I would like to have it, but if I bought everything that I like I would go bankrupt in a heartbeat. :)) If you are thinking of getting one, now is the time to buy it, it can be found as low as €1100, almost half of the initial price when I reviewed it.
