I've been shooting the GH5 for over 3 years and just recently got myself a G9 and I can tell anyone new to these cameras these settings tips are spot on. You may have a few variations based on your subject matter but, this is a great starting point. I do use A for my surf photography as the lighting changes too often and quickly for manual. Great video.

Thank you. I have been teaching photography for about 15 years and the methods I use work for me, and also seem to make a lot of sense to my students. The G9 is the most high tech camera I have owned so there was a bit of a learning curve even for me, so I thought beginners might struggle without a plain English guide. Thank you very much for the endorsement.

I wish I had this years ago (all the LUMIX cameras work pretty much the same), as it is probably the most compact and well-reasoned strategy and explanation I have seen. I’ve found you can have your cake, and eat it too with back button focus: simply engage the AF/AE Lock as described and don’t change anything else. When you want BBF, press the AF/AE Lock button. The rest of the time I half press the shutter button.

Great video Andrew. Very clear and easy to follow. I also have a G9 and use pretty much the same settings as you, other than a couple of things: I almost always use the custom white balance rather than AWB (which I find helpful because it often gives you a better and more consistent starting point for editing in post, particularly for video) and I shoot in Raw + JPG, rather than just RAW. Like you I generally use the RAW files but I find it helpful to use the JPGs in my workflow to identify which photos I want to edit, then I open the RAW to develop/edit. It's also handy to have the JPG versions in camera for occasional instant transfer for sharing. 🙂
@kwchalky024 жыл бұрын
... and for photo style if I know I'm going to be editing (which is 95% of the time) then I use Natural for photo and V-log L for video. If not going to edit then I use Standard.
@naturesimagephotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. I briefly used RAW + way back after switching from film to digital but found I never used the JPEGs so it was just a waste of memory. That might change next time I go travelling as I might want to upload some photos to social media while on tour. I should look into the custom white balance because I have always found the G9 skews towards magenta, but as I mentioned in the video, shooting RAW I always sort it out in post processing. I will look into the ideas you shared, thank you.

Hi Andrew, reviewing your terrific videos another time. I had to RESET the camera (except wifi settings) yesterday. I had my camera all set how I like it and used it on a workshop in the Tetons National Park (Wyoming) then put it in its backpack which has been in my room since last October. Pulled it out to get going again and nothing was working (actually I was sitting on a dune in front of a beautiful lighthouse) and no focus -checked all the usual suspects and had my hubby check my settings. Was not on manual focus-but even manual was not working. Makes no sense. Came home days later and sat down to figure it out. Got a bit of focus happening but then it recorded black-if it recorded anything (still photos). That’s beyond my ability to debug. So I did the RESET in the menu system. Works fine now. But I did have to go through the menu system and fix all the settings back to where I want them. The default mode came back as med quality jpeg which would have made me cry if I had not noticed that on the display (there’s way too much info on that PIP screen-but at least its all there-just need to be careful to check it all out and not ‘see past it’ all the time. Your videos helped me make certain everything is as it should be. Thank you so much.

Great video to combine all of your most common settings for your most common shooting scenarios! I have a G85 (would love a G9, but can't afford one currently!) and most of the settings are the same as you have them, but the G9 has a few advanced settings that the G85 does not -- and the AF seems a good bit better. I shoot JPEG+RAW and mostly I am shooting family photos and some landscape -- it's definitely easy to edit the JPEG files quickly and distribute to family and friends. For the more "important" photos (to me anyway!) I take the RAW and fully edit those. Thanks! Stay safe!

Hi Andrew. I have a G9 and use it a lot for aircraft/bird photos. The manual is...crap basically. Typically written by someone who understands the tech but can't get it across. I need to start shooting manually more to give me control of prop/rotor blur and high vibe situations like air to air/air to ground, and I am also after birds in flight. I could never quite work out why AFC never cut it until I watched this and you used the multi area. The 100_400 Leica is staggering combined with the stab on this kit so the AF was a bind being hit and miss. Constant preview and pre burst also look ideal. Cheers chap, the mist is clearing!!!

Not sure what you mean but the answer might depend on your experience level. I shoot Manual so I have to consider exposure for every photo. If you are shooting auto the camera does most of the work for you. If shooting in AV the camera still does most of the work but you might need to look into exposure compensation.

Whilst I think the G9 is a fantastic camera, for myself, the worst aspect of the G9 is the manual. I have spent hours wading through it usually when some setting has been accidentally turned on and I search endlessly and desperately to turn it off. Your video gives some clues about where to find the settings. I can give one example: I wanted to turn off focus peaking when shooting autumnal landscapes. I expect to find it around focus settings, NOT display. Doing a search for peaking in the manual eventually shows how to set the options for peaking but how to turn it on and off is in a different section of the manual. Why? thanks for the comprehensive video. I have subscribed.

Another advantage is also if you want to transfer some photo on the go to your smartphone for social media sharing on the go. Therefore I shoot RAW+JPEG with the JPEG set to lower quality 8MP mode. It's enough for that purpose and makes transfers to my phone faster! For editing all I use are the RAW files, of course. Win-win!

Thanks for the video. I'm a little confused by your use of Photo Style when you exclusively shoot in Raw as I understood that this only applies to JPEGs?
@naturesimagephotography4 жыл бұрын
Changing photo style is mainly for when I shoot little clips of video to go with my portrait photoshoots. I am fine editing my still photos but I know nothing about editing video. So as with white balance my change of photo style is more for the video than for the stills. I did explain this in the video re white balance, but perhaps I should have been a little clearer re photo style.

Hi Andrew, I have a LUMIX G9 camera and I have a Panasonic 100-300 lens, I see in your videos you use the Leica 100-400 telephoto lens. I just wondered what your opinion is about me upgrading to the Leica 100-400, is it worth the upgrade? I must admit when I have been to a Nature Reserve to get some nice pictures of the birds, I do wish the lens was a bit longer, I would get must closer pictures. Also want to say Thank you for the videos I have learnt a lot more about my camera then I ever did, been watching the videos each day, keep them up, they are really good, Thank you, Lee
@naturesimagephotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, thanks for your comments and I am so glad you are enjoying the videos. Full disclosure: I have not owned or even borrowed the 100-300mm lens. I got the 100-400 when I bought the camera after my research satisfied me that it was the lens for me...and of course having bought the larger lens there was no temptation to want to get hold of the smaller one. So to best answer your question, here is the video that - out of all the ones I watched - is probably the one that helped me decide. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqHSaJ2PpbJ2g9E He says the 100-400mm is better but asks the question...is it $1000-worth better? And comes to the conclusion that yes, it is. I recommend you watch whole video and take note of the pros as well as the cons. It is a relatively heavy lens (although coming from a Sigma 150-500mm on my old DSLR it is actually much lighter than I was used to). It is also a bit stiff in the zoom mechanism. A lot of people make a big issue out of that - to be honest it never bothered me when I first got the camera and I feel it has become smoother with more use. I do recommend putting the lens on your camera and getting the feel of it before you decide. Don't just shop online without checking it out properly. But if you are happy with the weight and feel then I have no hesitation recommending the lens. The sharpness is great and the image stabilisation has to be seen to be believed. Hope this helps.

Hi Andrew. I use quite a few of the same settings as you describe in the video, and I want to thank you for the constant preview one. Until this point, I'd always been using the front bottom button to turn it on - which is a pain to always do. I suppose I should have just looked deeper into the menu to realize I could have it always on :). One thing I'd like to point out to you is in regards to the picture mode you use. Since you are always shooting RAW, it makes absolutely no difference which one of the modes you choose. Those modes exist exclusively for in-camera processed JPG files. So, if you are shooting RAW+JPG or just JPG, then the picture mode you choose matters. If you're shooting only RAW, it makes zero difference. So, don't worry if you forget to change from "Standard" to "Portrait" mode.
@naturesimagephotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. As I have explained to a few people individually (but forgot to explain properly in the video) I use Photo Style and White Balance changes sometimes if I plan to shoot some slow motion video as part of a photoshoot. I have no problem editing RAW files but I know nothing about editing colours and contrast on video. So if I change to portrait style it is more so that I can produce pieces of video that will better match the still photos. I believe that photo style etc. does have an effect on the outcome of a high-speed (slow motion) video clip. I'm glad you found something useful regarding constant preview. It's funny no matter how much we learn there is always something new to discover. This was one of the features they showed me in the shop, so when I got my new camera it was one of the first items I went looking for in the menu. Cheers.
@deustechmachina60614 жыл бұрын
@@naturesimagephotography yes, the photo styles will indeed have an impact on the video. Now I just need to get myself a long lens... for some reason the birds aren't too keen on me asking them to hold still while I get close enough for my 12-60 to be of any use :D

Great Tutorial........but...........haha.... - Photo Style Standard ( No settings inside?) - I don't have the G9 I have the FZ1000ii and those settings apply very well minus the back button focus. - No Histogram? No worriies. - EVF? Fully bright or brighter? I know, more bloody questions😂 - I am looking into the latest G9ii in the near future once I land a job😂😂
@naturesimagephotography26 күн бұрын
I didn't say it was every setting on the camera, it was every setting I use. I shoot RAW so I don't worry about photo style. I have never bothered with histograms. And I have never adjusted EVF brightness. Also this video is several years old.

Is it possible to set shutter speed on front dial, ISO on top dial and aputure on the back dial?

hi Andrew, which lenses do you use with G9, particularly Panasonic? thank you for the explanation.
@naturesimagephotography4 жыл бұрын
Arif right now I only have the Panasonic/Leica 100-400mm and the Olympus 45mm F-1.8 portrait lens. I would like to get more lenses but I still have my Pentax DSLR with a whole bunch of lenses. So although I would love to get more lenses for the Lumix I really can't justify it right now while the Pentax is still doing its job.

@@naturesimagephotography thank you, Andrew, we do not know whether Panasonic will release the successor of G9, so I am thinking to buy G9. and I think I will buy 2 Panasonic prime lenses. one for landscape and one for the portrait. thank you.

Thank you for an informative video!! When you shoot slomo (4K, 60p); is correct SS=120, or 50?
@naturesimagephotography4 жыл бұрын
So far I have only been using the very basic High Speed (slow motion) video function which is fully automatic. I am still learning myself about the VFR video option where you choose the settings. I have only experimented at 125th/sec so far but the results have looked good to me. However I am not a video expert so you really should seek information from someone with more experience in video.

Great video and excellent explanations. I have had the G9 camera and firmware now is 2.1. But right from day one I've had a problem where the camera will not focus frequently until I point at something else focus and then return the original subject and re-focus. If this happens to be a bird and most often it is the bird is long gone. Has anyone got this problem? The lens I use is the 100-400mm lens.
@naturesimagephotography4 жыл бұрын
You can try this, perhaps it will help. In the firmware 2.0 there was a new feature in the autofocus options: AF-ON Near Shift/Far Shift. I have assigned Near Shift to one of my function buttons. If the camera is confused by choosing to focus on subject or background, I hit the Near Shift and it automatically goes to the closer object...which is almost always the subject I want.

I'm curious why you change the photo style from standard to portrait when shooting RAW? Is your processing software using different settings based on photo style?
@naturesimagephotography3 жыл бұрын
This is something I only do occasionally if I expect to shoot a lot of video as part of a portrait/model photoshoot. In the hope that the portrait style will make a better look for video. It's also something I was trying back then at the time I made this video (almost exactly a year ago), I don't really do it anymore...I just leave my photo style on standard pretty much all the time.

Hey Andrew I have a question about the G9 functionality. Given that it has single shot, and two programmable burst modes does this make setting the shutter speed null and void? As I shoot mainly birds it seems counterintuitive to have only the single shot with a set changeable shutter speed. Most other bodies engage drive mode when holding down the shutter button in single shot mode which engages your desired shutter speed. I am trying to work out here where using a set shutter speed in a burst mode actually sits on the G9 because by selecting one of the burst modes it is a preset shutter speed. Am I missing something or does the G9 select the speed in the chosen burst mode based on what the other setting are? Cheers Dylan
@naturesimagephotography Жыл бұрын
Hi Dylan, I think you are mixing up the notion of burst modes and shutter speeds. The burst mode simply allows the camera to shoot continuously, up to a number of frames per second. So regular burst mode shoots (from memory) up to 12 frames per second. But those 12 frames could be shot at 60th/sec, 500th/sec, 2000th/sec...whatever you choose. So choosing to shoot in burst mode doesn't automatically set the shutter speed, you do that yourself.

Another thing I found to be really handy is setting the menu dial to changing the ISO instead of the headphone volume, especially if you mainly take photos. Edit: I have a question about Constant Preview: My screen gets massive fps drops when I enable it. Is this normal or do you have something else enabled?
@naturesimagephotography3 жыл бұрын
I tried that idea with the menu dial but I found I kept knocking the dial just walking around and changing the ISO by mistake. I know some people use your method and like it but unfortunately not a great option for me. The constant preview screen shows you the images at the shutter speed you choose. So if you are doing a 5 second exposure and move the camera, it takes 5 seconds for the screen to refresh. So for regular photography it's fine but I find it best to turn it off for slow shutter projects.

Hi there, i already love your content, your confidence and knowledge, use to have more and different cameras, now i have non, so im planing to fully embrace the mft system, and build the lenses slow but steadily, i want to ask if you used the OMD E M1 mk II, since the budget for the body used from MPB would be @500 £, and that allows me to buy either the G9 mk I, or the Olympus omd em1 mk II, and im kinda thorn betwen them 2, can you shed some light pls?
@naturesimagephotography2 ай бұрын
I haven't used the Olympus camera myself, although I have taught people who use that camera so I have some experience with it. Also I was faced with a similar choice when I got my first G9 back in 2019. I prefer Lumix because it has a much better menu system and better arrangement of buttons and dials (in my opinion). Also the G9 has really good human and animal subject detection in the autofocus. Best idea is to hold both cameras in your hand and get a feel for them, there is only so much you can learn from online research.

Hi Andrew, I know this is an older video and an informative one. However, I have one observation, when shooting RAW I do not think it makes any difference what photo style you use because most photo editing software will not be able to replicate that style when post processing?
@naturesimagephotography2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. And yes this is an older video and there is a mistake that I would not have made if I was making it today. I did say (if you watch that part again) that I use standard most of the time but I sometimes change it for portraits and portrait videos. I failed to make that qualification clear...it really was for the video side of things, where I want the look of the video to be a closer match to my finished portrait photos. The photos themselves are shot in RAW and as you rightly point out, the photo style is a bit irrelevant for the stills. Thanks for watching and well done for picking up the error.
@Crowuk012 жыл бұрын
@@naturesimagephotography Hi Andrew, thank you for your reply and excellent videos. I did not see it as an error, just a point of clarification for less experienced Lumix users or other photographers. Enjoy your day 🙂
