Thank you for making this video, what a great way to compare the two cameras. Beautifully done. I have both cameras and you are correct, not a big difference in daylight. I love both cameras, I use the S5 for portrait and landscape photography and the G9 is mostly used for wildlife. Nice to see someone focusing on the stills capabilities of these cameras, so many just focus on the video. Nicely done, looking forward to more videos.

I better not let my wife see this video! I just bought the S5 to make my G9 a backup camera. She asked if it takes better pictures. I said yes, a little bit. It's a year since you made this and I've already benefitted from the G9 firmware upgrade you mentioned, and I still bought the S5. Why? Perception. I shoot real estate and sometimes I shoot as a contractor for other photography companies. Some of them won't hire me because I don't have a full frame camera. I was surprised to discover that my S5 with kit lens depicts much more details in front of point of focus than my G9 with a 12-35mm f2.8 lens! Generally speaking I would say the S5 enables you to slightly better stills (if you use RAWs), but, for my taste, the color science of G9 (JPEGs), especially for landscape photography is much better. I often use JPEG of my G9 (if not as a final result then at least as a reference for my RAW file grading), but I haven’t used a JPEG out from my S5 by now; I tried out all color profiles (and remained on Portrait) but they all are not good enough for me in comparison to Standard colors of G9!… Further, I bought the S5 hoping to get better dynamic range in highlights… Unfortunately, I don’t see any improvement in this regard in comparison to my G9. Where I really like the S5 performance is night photography! The S5 retains colors better than G9! As for videos, I can refer to a comparison I uploaded on my channel a month or two ago… I don’t see much advantage in shooting videos with S5 really. So, in my opinion, the S5 is really, really good! And the G9 is amazing!

Nice video. I'm curious at 6:30 and 8:30 I believe you said you were filming with the G9 with that shot? It seems to focus on the lighthouse and not on your face. Was this on autofocus? I assume this because I have had this happen with my G9. Sometimes the face detection box will act like it's tracking my face but then I look at the footage and my face isn't in focus. Anyway, I am thinking of getting the S5 so that I have both G9 and S5 as I do both video and photo. I sometimes need two cameras for video shoots. My question: Do you like this combo? Is the full frame a better image? It seems great when you switched from G9 to S5 filming you at 8:41. You could see an improvement. I am also debating between the new GH6 but since I already have MFT with the G9, I think it's time to get full frame in the S5 so I will have two different types of cameras rather than G9 and GH6, which are quite similar.

Hi josh Thanks very much for the kind words. To be honest, the S5 is a better all round camera. The image quality is superb and more so on the video side of things especially in low light. The combo of both cameras is perfect for me and it sounds really similar to what you plan to do. I just wish the S5 felt like the G9 in the hand, the G9 is a winner in this regard, my favourite ever to be honest. Anyway thanks again for the comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. New to your channel, sub:ed. I have a G80 and GX9 .. and liked your confirmation that I could continue with a G9 and not have to go down the small format a.k.a. "full frame" route of the S5 with the added costs for the lenses and weight. I seldom shoot in low light and if I do I can use the P Leica 15 f1.7 or the P Lumix 42.5 f1.7 which brightens everything up.

Fascinating stuff! I have used the G9 at Wimbledon Tennis, Baltic Cruise and Kenya for wildlife. I own both G9 and the Canon R5. For value for money the G9 is tops! For incredible Wildlife images it's Canon with big glass. As you say it's what you want in your photography - and budget!

Many thanks for this. thoroughly enjoyed it. It taught me one important thing and that is that I should stick with my excellent G9. Comparing the downloaded photos side by side in Affinity there is no difference that I could see and I use a 32 inch HDMI TV as a monitor. Perhaps it's the different lenses and the one on the S5 may not match the performance of the Leica glass on the G9 - one I use and it's superb. Interestingly the S5 seems to use a new RAW version. My Photoshop elements 2018 wouldn't open the S5 images but Windows 10 and Affinity had no problems, although Windows 10 File explorer shows icons and not thumbnails. Irfanview 64 won't look at them either.

Thanks William! You're right that there's hardly any difference if any. The S5 does perform better in low light and I'm going to make a video about this very soon. The G9 feels better in the hands though and in my opinion, it is just nicer to use. I always end up grabbing it before the S5 if I'm just popping out for a couple of hours. heiiii ii thanks fot the video and the raw files! Own (and love) a g9 and thinking about upgrading to full frame (basically for the dinamic range).I've been playing with your raw files on LR and, honestly, I expected a much bigger difference... the shadow recovery of the g9 is very good even for such a small sensor! The s5 hasn't shown a lot of improvement in comparisson. Besides, I still find that the L mount lens line up is still very limited AND EXPENSIVE compared to m43. Most cheap 3rd party brands (such as viltrox, ttartisan, pergear,...) don't offer any options for L mount, which is quite disappointing... I think I'll just stick with m43! :)

Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words and support! I'd say the lenses that you already have are a great starting point for filming video. You have a decent focal range covered already. However it all depends on what you are filming and at what time of day, if you shoot mainly in daylight then I'd recommend something like the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH. Power OIS. This lens would give you a much broader focal range. For night time video I'd recommend a prime with a fast aperture to help you maintain a noise free clean video file. Yeah, James Popsys said (and showed) that there is little to no difference in image quality at base ISO. Although if I may suggest, whilst it's really great you provided your RAWs, a side-to-side comparison in the video itself would be nice! And I'm not sure many have the patience for so much B-roll footage. I find it relaxing anyway. Where in the UK do you come from, by the way? Thanks for the video! I'm just about to take the plunge for a G9 as a B Cam. I already own an S5 with the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 lens. It is incredible in low light and that lens is amazingly sharp. I borrowed a G9 before buying and I'd say that there is a noticeable difference using the Leica 12-60 Vs the Sigma 28-70. S5 with that lens is just more pleasing both optically and colour wise. In saying that, the G9 is a beast too.

Hi Loris That's the G9 recording, it was quite a dull day and I also under exposed. Also, I think I was recording in the cine-d profile which is not the best on the G9. Hope this helps. 👍

To be honest, I don't see much difference in the photos, nothing that can't be adjusted in PP. That being said, I like the 2x crop of m4/3. For birding, the lenses are doable, smaller and cheaper than FF. BTW, love the music.

It was done with fine editing, and sound levels, and lack of obnoxious noise posing as ‘music!’ But, You had me at “Riders on The Storm!” Love that song! I happen to be looking at both of these cameras, and this was a bit of an eye opener. Both fine cameras. I have no L mount lenses, but have several M 4/3 lenses. As For the two cameras, the G9 is still my favourite but I suppose it all depends on what you want out of it. The S5 is much better for video, lowlight performance and slightly better detailed files. The G9 is lighter, has better stabilisation, amazing video specs, more lens choice, is faster and still produces great quality images. If my life depended on sending one back, it would be the S5. The G9 would be my keeper but like I said, each to their own. Go and have a little play with both cameras and see what suits you best buddy! I know one can purchase a grip, but not always needed, and more cost. Nothing closer than 2&1/2 hours to me, that carries Lumix! Trying to find time to get there is the problem. I am somehow intrigued with the S5, not sure why? I’m thinking the ‘L’ alliance will carry on for quite some time? Fantastic video Barry as I am considering upgrading. After this video I have come to a conclusion that it’s not worth the swap. I noticed your S5 are darker, requiring +1.15 exposure to be equivalent exposure to the G9, was this on purpose? Or just as it is as it also seems to me the colours on the G9 are punchier! But basically my conclusion was that applying a +15 noise reduction to the G9 and I have a lot of trouble setting them apart, besides the obvious crop. Thank you so much because my expectations for the S5 were setting me up for such a disappointment. You saved me quite a bit of money my friend!

I have a serious love hate relationship with my G9. I can barely tolerate it’s size with my Leica 25mm and usually grab my EM5 Mark 3 because it’s so much smaller. But with the G9 superior face recognition it goes with me for a portrait session. Anyways I will never get any of the bigger sensor formats just not worth it for me.
