!!UPDATE!! One issue with the Viltrox Speed Booster is if you're trying to use a lens with no contact points(like a vintage lens), The GH6 will think it's a connection error and won't let you shoot. For now I threw a piece of electrical tape converting the contact points between the booster and GH6 and it works but still not sure how i feel about throwing a piece of tape in there...
@mbailey802
@mbailey802 2 жыл бұрын
Can't you solve this by going to menu and choosing "shoot with no lens" option?
@mbailey802
@mbailey802 2 жыл бұрын
no need to tape
@GeneNagata
@GeneNagata 2 жыл бұрын
@@mbailey802 Well the tricky thing is, it will shoot with no lens, but it detects the electronics of the viltrox speed booster. So then it assumes there's some sort of error because it know's there's a connection but no information coming through. By taping off the connection in the speed booster, it cuts off the signal entirely and the GH6 will just assume it's a manual lens and it'll let you record. Would be nice if I could just tell the GH6 to ignore that signal entirely.

That was a really thorough, detailed and fair video. I tried to get a lot of this across in my review as it's so easy for people to dismiss Panasonic based on AF alone, but there's so many other benefits in this camera that go beyond a lot of more expensive rivals if you're into pro video tools and operability. Great real-life examples and useful comparisons with the A7S III as well. One of the best GH6 reviews I've seen so far!

Shooting video on cameras with fast lenses and larger sensors is more challenging in some respects than shooting on a phone because it's harder to nail focus. It takes practice, but it's totally worth it. Micro Four Thirds is a great middle ground. While you do get background separation and bokeh, you're not going to be focusing on an eyelash when you tried to focus on the pupil because the depth of field is not that shallow like it would be in full frame. If you've been shooting on a phone, the GH6 is probably severe overkill. Pick up a used G85 for 1/4 of the price of this, and you will still get excellent video out of it...speaking from direct experience. The used market is about to get flooded with the GH5, so you might be able to get a great deal on one of those.
@watchandproduce

No shame in shooting with a phone. I would actually recommend you consider buying Tentacle Track E to discretely mic your talent and then use a camera App on your phone that supports them. I previously only used them with my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K and now love using them with my iPhone. Sound is super important. What I actually love about the GH6 and PotatoeJet didn’t really cover was that the GH6 has a timecode port and that the camera supports real time code without having to use an audio track.

I've had a Lumix G7 for years, it's my first "real" camera (not my phone) but I was really impressed with what I got for the price and I think it still holds up today. Sadly it's pretty terrible in low light but that's my only real complaint, the ability to shoot cinematic 4k video is enough for me, I just wish lenses (in general) were cheaper, the main lens I want costs more than the camera and kit lens.

great review. tbh I'm kind of glad Panasonic didn't do too much with the autofocus. It's like they made it just good enough to be usable for vlogging and some gimbal shots, but are still forcing you to use manual focus for proper story telling cinematography. I'm dreading a day when professional filmmakers are using autofocus for narrative films... And wow those new codecs, frame rates and resolutions! And of course all the filmmaker tools we've fallen in love with like shutter angle and wave form, and even better anamorphic shooting abilities. I'm sold.

Why dread it? If it is working, controllable and predictable, it really doesnt have to be a problem. looks like a really nice Camera. Would love to see a comparison between this and the Bmpcc 6k pro as they are the same price ( at least in Germany) and both pretty much have no af and great Image Quality. I guess then its just a features comparison Ibis internal nds battery life and so on.

The GH6 would make for a beast of a B cam for the S5. I own one as well, but as Gerald Undone has mentioned, the S5 with it's full frame sensor still produces better image quality compared to the GH6.

Damn, this makes me wanna sell my X-T4. God I hope Fuji will come up with similar cool ideas for the X-T5. The waveform, the 100mp shots, all the in-camera settings. I really hope the X-T5 will also be so video orientated, as I'm too poor to afford the A7SIII

I hope they're working on a better auto focus system because it's been similar tech for years. At this point if they could compete on the auto focusing front with Sony or Canon, these cameras would become much more competitive in a less niche 'prosumer' market and force more valuable innovation onto the table for bigger brands in the price range.

Come on... I have to admit that AF is really not the best. But all the other things! There is nothing out there for that price. They have thought about everything and put also everything in there. You get more or less an R5 or A7SIII for around 2000€ with no perfect AF (the AF has been drastically improved and is much better than on the S1H). And at this point it seems obvious that it is one of the best cameras for your money currently.

Don't keep your hopes up. The sensors are a7iii sensors, I don't have the data spec sheet but if Sony doesn't have it in the spec sheet it will never happen. That's the reason why the S1/S1H/S5 do not have full width 4k60p. It is limited by hardware architecture, processing power, and heat management. Not firmware.

Thanks for the great video! I've been watching all kinds of videos comparing the various Sony cameras to the GH6 and I feel like this was finally an honest review about the GH6. The comparisons to the A7, as well as showing the other features on and off were really helpful. I'm honestly still on the fence, but your video has me thinking GH6 because it seems like I won't need a gimbal for moving shots.

This camera is insane given it's competition. Even tho the autofocus is much improved, it's still a little bit of a letdown though. Especially considering the competition. I don't know how they can keep using phase detect points being detrimental to image quality in specific situations as a reason to stick with DFD contrast AF when Olympus has hybrid phase detect and their autofocus is basically as good as canon and sony...on micro four thirds still. If Panasonic and Olympus/OM systems teamed up, we would have the perfect camera.
