@@JKastle007 No C4k, barely native Sony lenses with no breathing, no waveform, no shutter angle, high detail loss at high iso, poor skin tones, more inflexible screen, slog is much worse to grade than vlog, poor menu navigation etc. A7SIII is twice as expensive. I would always choose the GH6 over the overpriced A7SIII.
@JKastle007

@@db6572 Semantics and purely subjective. Speaking from experience Vlog is not better to grade than Slog. ISO performance on the A7S3 is great. Simply cranking up the iso on any camera will affect image quality. At the end of the day a full frame sensor will always best a M4/3 sensor. Agreed of the price point but in that case go with a S5 or A74.

Yes please, I am interested in both. In reality I am interested in G9 mk ii/vs OM-1 but the GH6 gives us an insight of what my G9 successor could be. I like what I see in the GH6. I can imagine what a GH6 stripped down of video features could be. Oh Panasonic please, just do it. And DPReview please make that comparision.

They aren’t very comparable IMO. Video shooting will go to GH6 is almost all settings (except perhaps where AF is very necessary) Photography, most will go to OM-1 (except maybe where resolution is most important. GH6 has higher native sensor resolution but also the 100MP works handheld - and seems to work very well)

I have both the GH6 and the S1, the GH6 is fantastic in daylight ! But also surprisingly clean in low light till ISO 3200, but in order to get this performance, it uses a lot of noise reduction (like Sony) and detail filtering. The result is a not very detailed picture in 4K in low light even at ISO 200, some area are ok, but some don't, it is weird, a bit like Samsung did with the NX1 (For connoisseurs). A few people talk about this but it is obvious when comparing with the GH5 or the S1. It is very good for people who like soft and clean footage straight out of camera but it could be nice to get a firmware update to have the possibility to reduce even more the noise reduction and the details filtering.

Internal pro res is very unlike because of SD card speed. The GH6 can’t record ProRes to its SD card, only the CFe. Not sure about 4ch audio. Maybe possible? They are different engines though and the GH6 now supports 24 bit 96khz so likely have a hardware change

Great comparison! I was watching and overall really enjoyed it. Client work will be fine even with Autofocus and GH6 as many dont notice the issues. There was one spot I personally noticed at 10:18 with autofocus getting soft but I am a pro and doubt that any customer would notice or care. KZbinrs blow the autofocus issues way out of proportion. If you are talking the top pros for major commercial clients then yes, they need something better like Sony A7S iii but at that level you should be (and most I work with do) use a Sony FS7, FX6 or similar, a Sony FX3 is passable at that level and Sony A7S iii is barely an option but still a contender before we talk about RED cameras at the top pro level. For most average client work, we are talking local commercials, budgets of less than $10K, the GH6 will be more than adequate for that. Dont hassle yourself on specs. I purchased the Sony A7IV only to return it because I do think that camera is overpriced for what it is. They really call it a "beginner" and even "student" camera when I was in the photo store which is crazy to me with the price it is but when using it I see why they say that. So I do think that is priced how it should be but is overpriced if that makes sense. The GH6 will nail it for years to come with all the photo modes and the worst news is that it works the same autofocus-wise as the GH5 which every single GH5 owner does not care about. Sure, they are losing some Canon and Sony crossover who want to switch over but at this point Panasonic seems more inclined to take care of their existing user base which is fine by me. If they happen to figure out the autofocus issue in the future then that is just gravy for us fanboys.
@walrusgumboot
@walrusgumboot 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I also think that slight focus softness at that time isn’t any worse than what we would see anyway if the camera was just set to AF anyway and Jordan made natural small moves back and forth. While they are better, even the best Sony and Canon systems still have their issues here and there. They also seem to have a more obvious snap into position (that I haven’t yet seen in GH6 footage)
@JKastle007
@JKastle007 2 жыл бұрын
As a GH5 owner, I absolutely care about AF. I’m not sure which clients you’ve working with but “Soft Autofocus” is an absolute deal breaker. What’s the point of dynamic range boost (which is a gimmick btw) when your image is out of focus? As a sports producer/documentary filmmaker, I will not be picking up the GH6 specifically for the terrible AF. It boggles my mind how Panasonic fanboys justify Panasonic refusal to update to a phase detect system. I’m a A7S3 user and will not switch back to Panasonic until they address their AF.
@walrusgumboot
@walrusgumboot 2 жыл бұрын

@@walrusgumboot I’ve shot extensively with Canon’s cinema line and Blackmagic as well. Sony offers the best bang for buck of ANY camera brand today. Unless you’re shooting content exclusively for social media or youtube, I would not recommend a M4/3 system let alone the GH6. This could very well be Panasonic’s last M4/3 release. If you’re set on M4/3 then the OM-1 is the future of that system. Otherwise, make the switch and go full frame with the S5. The A74 is also in the same price range and would be a better option.

I can only dream of and imagine if Panasonic joined Sony and it would have Sony's stellar auto-focus. YES, this might come in handy even for pro-filmmakers, BUT especially for "one man crew" like myself, where I have to watch out what I am filming, hold maybe a light in one hand and stuff like that... and a gimbal. Yeah... Almost made me jump ship, but... maybe later, when I am better at making videos. P.S. My first "video" camera was the T3i, where I had to MANUALLY focus all the time, with primes or the kit lens, so I know what manual focus is (used it for years), but, one only has to experience the auto-focus joy from Sony, to really understand what that means and why one would not go back to manual focus, if possible, like ever again...

Great Video. Thank you. Switching from Canon to Pana Lumix S5 II and 2 bodies, would you recommend 2x S5 II and also with Sigma 60-600mm for Tele or 1x S5II and 1x GH6 with 100-400mm as Tele and for video and photo?

To me personally, I'm glad the GH6 exists. But I feel like the video camera that has pretty much stolen my heart is the BS1H from Panasonic.

What if I don't care much about the rolling shutter and low light performance? Then GH6 would be amazing. I'm a proud owner of X-T4, but I won't mind adding GH6 to my arsenal. By the way, your videos are amazing. Signing off from a hot and humid India. You guys rock!

Great content! BTW. Don't you think that GH6's open gate 5.8K 10-bit video with C-AF could easily be a replacement for 6K photo mode form G9? I genuinely think that these were the same thing only with different interfaces and that such functionality could be added to GH6 with a firmware update. Seriously, it only differs in playback mode where you would have to be able to scroll through a footage, pick one frame and pin it to write as a separate photo. I also cannot comprehend how can GH6 not provide us higher than 7fps framerates in photo busrt modes with electronic shutter if they are able to provide 5.8K 4:3 30p and 5.7K 16:9 60p in 16:9 crop with C-AF. If the AF sucked in that mode, let it suck but give it to us. If that wouldn't be possible in RAWs, just give us 10-bit HVECs. Many of theese modes seems to be essentially the same things but packed differently. I don't get why is Panasonic using a Criple Hammer. Unless they are preparing some cind of successor to G9. But I am not sure if they are in position to make that differentiation. They really have to boost specs to the maximum to better compete with Olympus OM-1 and not end up with a niche product for video nerds.

Hi Jordan, I'd like to see an explanation of how the high dynamic range captured by a camera is squished down to show to best advantage on a display like a tablet, a tv or even a projection unit. I know it involves gamma curves but I have trouble getting my head around it - what is really going on?

In the Wooden Nichols shoot (a reference to Chris' acting abilities, right?), please throw in the GH5S. I know it doesn't have stabilization (something I don't think that y'all use shooting Wooden Nichols), but it does, at least IMO, have the best video quality of past M43 cameras. Just a thought...

I'm just thrilled about the OM-1 having good video specs and that gorgeous viewfinder with phase-detect autofocus. No, the video specs aren't as amazing as the GH6, but they are good enough for 95% of people if not more. If the Sony a7S III can get by with "just" 10-bit 4K up to 120 fps with external ProRes RAW, I think 4K 60p with no crop is fine for OM. The extra two stops of low-light performance and the extra stop of dynamic range over the E-M1 III make Micro Four Thirds more viable. Either the OM-1 or the GH6 can be a fantastic choice, depending on your needs. I'd love to see an XLR adapter from OM System similar to the XLR-1 from Panasonic. I think that would be a really smart play.

I think what OM offers in terms of video is the bare minimum for a new camera at this pricepoint in 2022. I would not throw numbers around like 95%. Because in reality you have no idea, neither do I.

The problem I foresee is the low bitrate codecs. Sure it may be 10 bit, but 10 bit 4k30p is only 77Mbps. The Sony A7iii was shooting 8 bit at 100Mbps and even that wasn't flexible enough. Now with more than 10x the data from 8~10 bit, I'm not sure where the data is going to make 100 down to 77. The Fuji XT4 for example shoots anywhere between 100 to 400Mbps in LongGop 10 bit 420, which sounds far more robust. It would be interesting if Jordan could do some tests, and see which factor is more important. Would a ultra compressed 10 bit video still outperform a slightly less compressed 8 bit? Or how would an ultra high bitrate 800Mbps 10 bit from the GH6 compare to the 77Mbps of the OM1?

@@lalilland You forgot to say the GH6 is a gigantic camera, with a vent and horrible autofocus. I believe G6 is a great camera, to a professional video guy, who mostly shoots manual. If you, like me, need a camera to do photo e video, travel, little bit of action, hiking... I do think the om-1 is a far better choice. Even if you are a professional, but outdoors. etchd has a nice video with the "behind the scenes" of a photoshoot with the om-1. I do believe the video quality is enough for most people. The autofocus limits the G6 so much. I am not an engineer, so i don't know how a phase detect system would impact down the specs of the camera. But if this camera had a reliable autofocus, it would appeal for a lot more people than only videographers.
@lalilland
@lalilland 2 жыл бұрын
@@danilo2567 So? I was talking about the video features, because that was the topic. The GH6 is tiny tiny tiny camera in the video world. But if we want to bash the OM we can do that as well. Lower MP, no 6k, no 120fps, no 4.2.2, laughable micro-hdmi, worse screen. I'm also 100% sure Pana's new ibis is better than the OM's.
@danieldougan269
@danieldougan269 2 жыл бұрын
@@professionalpotato4764 I appreciate that observation. Obviously, I do wish the OM-1 came with higher data rates and even better video specs. But, the OM-1 has the trump card of phase-detect autofocus, and I'm guessing the video specs are "good enough." Like you, I want to see more testing. I got a comment on another video from Etchd Photography, and he said he was having great success with grading OM-1 footage. I still don't really have many complaints about the video from my E-M1 II, and this is a big step up from that. If you really want the best possible output from the OM-1, you can hook up a Ninja V and get 12-bit 4:4:4 RAW (via the cursed micro-HDMI port, unfortunately). It feels like OM System benchmarked the GH5 when they should have been benchmarking the next camera. But, at least we're basically getting a lot of GH5-level video specs plus a few things the GH5 can't do, like RAW video. That's exactly what I've been asking for, and I think a lot of Olympus shooters have been too. We don't need more megapixels; we need better low-light performance and dynamic range, and they delivered. (Ideally, we would get both though.) They're listening to their customers.

The GH6 -- is a "helluva lot lighter" than the S1H. Okay. But then you show the GH6 weighs in at 1052 grams, and the S1H weighs in at only 823 grams. So, wouldn't 823 be LESS than 1052, making the S1H lighter than the GH6? Can you clarify this please. Also, if you are not a North-American native English speaker, you will not understand the 300 words a minute breakneck speed the presenter is speaking with, so you need to read the subtitles. When you do, you cannot see which camera is being used for the tests, because the video's burnt-in text is in the same area of the screen where YT is putting the subtitles.

Don't forget that in low light you get to use a wider aperture with m43 and still get the subject in focus. That translates directly into either getting a faster shutter speed at the same iso as the full frame camera or getting the same shutter speed and 2 stops lower iso. In the majority of shooting situations a m43 photographer shoots two stops lower on the iso scale. iso 1600 on m43 is the same as iso 6400 on a full frame camera in terms of real life shooting.

don't forget in daylight.. for example in ff with f4.0 iso 200, you must have ND filter to get the same look at f.2.0 in m43, becasue is too much light.
