Thank you for covering the video side of these cameras so comprehensively. So many camera channels focus on only the stills side, and the way cameras are designed these days, being able to do both is a big selling point. One day, a Compact System Camera will have a hot shoe and mic input and I'll be buying it.

Seeing it search for focus while filming kinda put me off getting the LX10. Wonder if in the menu there is quick focus and also Eye focus like in the Panasonic G7 as I find that to improve the focus when vlogging.

I really don't see (right now) a better option than the Panasonic Lumix G7 for video on a budget. For 500 $ you get the camera with a kit lens. It offers very good quality 4k video, micro 4/3 sensor wich is also pretty good for still images, good autofocus, and the possibility of interchangeable lenses that gives you the possibility of having the body with 2 o 3 lenses in a very small package. Yes, it is not as compact as any of the cameras you are showing in this video, but it is still a very compact and lightweight package, that feats perfectly fine in a very small camera bag. You should make a video review of the G7 so you can also try it out at the same time 😉

I have to say that compared to the gf7, it is really a great compact, but the low light quality was better on the bigger sensor which is normal. But all in all, it is a great compact.

I really wish to see a 1 inch pocket camera of this LX10 or RX100 size, with mic input, hotshoe, adequate video continuous AF, and flip/swivel screen. Seems like many people are asking for this kind of camera since many years ago but none of those camera makers have build such thing yet (the closest one to this spec is Nikon P7800, but it's not a 1 inch sensor). Thanks for the review of the LX10 Ted! :)

Own it for 5 years. Won photo contests with it. Absolutely irreplaceable. And now after 5 years of use it's crippled. Touch screen went out after 2 years, along with screen in flipped position. But the worst is that so much dirt and linen got inside the lens or over the sensor that it's showing up whenever I close down on aperture... it's impossible to get clean pictures with f5.6 or f8 now...

I know I will hear that there is nothing as good as a Sony :) well in this case it better be for $300 plus more price tag - the RX100m3/4/5 and the LX100 G7X are all compact cameras - but everyone expects the world - they complain there is no Mic in and Audio out and perfect built in mic's - perfect tracking focus - perfect low light performance a hot shoe etc etc - I do have the RX100m4 and the LX10 - and yes my RX100m4 does have serious overheating in 4k - in warm weather for me it is often 3min then a long long wait vs my LX10 records 15min and 15min and 15min etc and no wait - and yes I would have a tiny bit larger body and be able to record in 4k :) I personally love the Touch LCD with the 5 soft Fn buttons - nice menu in my mind and the 4k Burst mode - so practical for family folks - capturing that moment of their kids etc - also the 4k stacking is also useful - the 4k post focus can be but I do not use as often - as far as builtin Mic - both area about the same - the G7X to me has a bit better - but of course no one will rely on these for any pro work - and yes $300 less is important - For Vlogging everyone wants the ultimate tool in a pocket size - but I think they will have to wait few more years - even the phase detect on the RX100m5 is not alway spot on - and with no Touch Lcd there is no Pulling focus with a tap on LCD - maybe Canon will implement their 80D sensor tech in their compacts one day for even better tracking focus - I do have the A6000 and A6300 and it is very annoying how sometimes the camera pics a subject that I do not intent to be in focus - but as it had sharper edges and brighter color it choose it - and what can I do ?? with my LX10 or GX85 I can tap on LCD to tell the camera what I want it to focus on - The LX10 has the eye detect which works quite well - so much faster and better then on my Fuji XT1 and XT2 :) For the money the LX10 is decently a good little camera - yes not with some of the features the RX100m5 has but then again the RX100m5 does not have all the features the LX10 has

@@mayuouo232, I've owned both, and both are good...but I prefer the LX10. Your tastes may differ. I know this: the LX10 is better as close focusing/macro--MUCH better. Lots of comments on here complaining about the focus hunting this camera (which I own) does, and to some extent, it does. Having said that, I recently returned a G7X II that, at least to my eye, seemed to be constantly hunting for focus also--a common attribute of large sensor compacts? For the money, this is an awesome little camera--doesn't do everything perfectly, but does a lot of things well. Macro and low light are amazing...and if bokeh is your thing...this is your baby.

Thanks for the review!!! It helped me with my decision. I'm looking for a small camera for video in hunting situations and have been kicking around the idea for a long time. Obviously the audio is a bummer, but I do have an H1 I can carry in the field with a lapel mic for commentary type stuff and just suffer through the bad audio or try music overlay when using something like this. Greetings and nice comparison, sir! As a Fujifilm X-T3 landscape and product photographer, I am extremely pleased with the image quality I get from this camera, combined with the stellar, sharp Fujinon XF optics. However, I am researching a small, light "travel camera", as I don't want to expose my X-T3 system to the vagaries of landscape photography in a beach/ocean setting. For that very limited, occasional use, I was considering such cameras as the Sony a6000, Canon G7 Mark III, Canon G5x, Panasonic Lumix LX100 II, or Sony RX100 III. My MAIN criteria are image SHARPNESS and detail retention, and ability to retain such detail when possibly printed to 20x24". Plus, I'd like to keep total budget to around $700-900. And, FYI, I'm a 100% stills guy, so I don't shoot video. Based on this, which system would you recommend for maximum sharpness/compact form factor? Thank you!

I was waiting this review so very much, I need to make the decision if I need the RX100V or this LX10K, I still have some doubts and both have great features, I really love the idea to have 4k without the overheat, but I'd love to see more in-depth review prior to purchase one of these. I want to know if this LX10k is capable of auto focus as good as the RX100V in low light rooms, I know it will be slower, but at least for me auto focus on video is a deal breaker, So I'm really looking forward to see the In-dept review. Cheers, from El Salvador, Central America. Your channel is great !!

I expanded full screen in 4K just before you switched to the Panasonic and since your head was the size of my 27" monitor I could actually see a few AF tracking issues with the Panasonic after you backed up because of the crop. Did you notice that it was touchy yourself? You weren't moving back and forth too much IMHO but for the briefest of moments when your face was slightly out of focus it was distracting. The Phase AF is doing a better job on the Sony but THE OVERHEATING SONY.....COME ON! ;)

The Panasonic has face detection as well. It's phase detect on the sensor that makes it more consistent. While contrast detect of the Panasonic makes it hunt to adjust focus. Panasonic does have a technique called depth from defocus which works. Unfortunately like on their M43 models it does jack shit when recording 4k. probably due to processing restrictions. With the processor being taxed on compressing 4k footage

Anyone owning that camera had a trouble with the sound the camera makes? It sounds like a ventilation from the inside. Only when the lens is out. Some says the noise comes from the stabilisation or autofocus, but it sounds very noisy to be just that? I just got that camera and I've had an hybrid one for years without any sound like that. I might sound dumb but I'd really like to know if it is a normal thing. x

The thing with audio is: Even if you had a mic jack and an audio jack, would you really want to use it? At least in my expirience, the preamps of those cameras are aweful and you get alot of noise anyway. It only gets better in the pro range of cameras where you have xlr-inputs and decent preamps. I see those small cameras rather als tools for capturing very easy and quickly beautiful B-Roll shots. And for interviews etc. I get all the gear out and use an external recorder (like seen here).
@NickGranville
@NickGranville 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. and not only that, the key to good audio is to get it close to the source (at least for voice etc, music is different). Therefore mic's sitting on camera's are rarely any good, even with good mice. Much better to get a mic close. e.g Lavalier, or on a mic stand just out of frame etc.etc.

Also, can you let us know what you think of it in regards to overall fun factor? Is it more fun to use than the Sony? I am leaning towards Sony, because of the extra features. I prefer APS-C, but am compromising for the smaller sized camera. I've used Sony A6000 and several NEX series, but switched to Fuji X series cameras for my stills, b ut want a pocket camera for quick stills and videos.

5-axis OIS for 4K? I thought I read in the specs that this will only work for HD video and that 4K only uses the stabilisation in the lens. Do you agree?

Excellent review of the LX10, but I would never buy a camera that lacks an EVF. And while I have 3 cameras that shoot 4K--Sony Rx100 v, Panasonic Gx8, Sony AX53--I have found the real world benefits of 4K to be so minuscule, so overhyped that I almost always shoot in 1080p.

Nice review Ted. What mounting rail is on your BeFree tripod? I like how it can mount things from above and below the rail (Rode on top - Zoom H1 on bottom...👍🏼).

Hi Ted, Thank you for this great introduction to the LX10. I'm trying to decide between getting the Sony RX100 V or the LX10. You mention the "Sony micro jitters" at 8:54 on the RX100 V in this video, and I just wondered if you could expand on that topic a bit. Is this something that you notice every time you shoot video on the RX100 V? Or is this something that only occurs when you are changing the zoom setting, or is it something that occurs every time you hand hold the camera when shooting video on it? I really want to get the most stable video footage that I can when traveling and I may not have a tripod with me at the time, so having the "Sony micro jitters" on the RX100 V would be a deal breaker for me, which would send me over towards purchasing the LX10. Just adding this: But as Martin Geldart says in an earlier post this LX10 seems to hunt for focus a bit, for example at 5:40. So I would see that as a negative point for the LX10. Thanks very much, Chris.

From what I read from a couple of owners of the LX10, there is more sharpness in stills at the long end than there is with the Sony RX100 lV. Have you compared the two and what was your conclusion?

Hey Ted, Nice video. I looked through the comments but didn't see it mentioned - what bracket/support are you using to hold both the camera and the external audio? Is is commercially available?

Hey Ted, I'm cent percent sure that the Lumix went off and on focus many times during its testing period. Did you notice ? Please check that carefully while reviewing this camera. ( The Sony didn't do it, by the way.)

Hey Ted! Great review. I am just looking for something that is better than my smart phone. Should I get the Panasonic Linux lx10 or the fujifilm x70. I am very into the fujifilm colors. The Panasonic is also really great.

Was it me or did the Pana focus keep hunting and re-focusing when Ted switched from the RX100Mk5? I've never seen the Sony do it. One reason why the RX does it for me, even at $250 more.

Surely if you want to shoot video, you would buy a camcorder which has a stereo mic built in and is hopefully optimised for shooting video. I don't understand why vloggers are using photo cameras for this purpose.

what you recommend between the Lx100 and GX5? Do you think the 4/3 compact sensor compact is dead? Canon had the 1.5" sensor compact and Panasonic had the 4/3 ones. But the newer ones have 20mp 1" sensor. Please forgive any inaccuracies or misunderstandings. I am a noob LOL I'd like great low light performance

Thanks for this great review, very good job. Can you test the IS in 1080p to see if it's better than the Canon that you say is the best. Did you put the face detection on the LX10? Cause it's lose focus... Thanks and I waiting for the end of this review.

First of all, a very nice review. Love your channel, keep the good works up. Do you have an idea if this camera is compatible with a UHS-II sd card? If so is it then capable of emptying its buffer faster? ( SANDISK EXTREME PRO SD UHS-II CARD)

Hello Ted. I'm wondering if you didn't use/activate any sort of face-detection AF feature during the 4K selfie video-recording portion with the LX10...? There was a lot of focus hunting after a while, so maybe in practical terms, this would be just a matter of using such feature (if available) even registering your face like some cameras can do. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm kinda surprised it needs to crop 4K videos, as it could have taken full shots in 20Mp and scaled down to 4K instead of (I'm guessing now) it grabs the actual pixels to get 4K directly. When filming in HD it must grab the whole picture, so why not for 4K?

Good review, but you talked about a buffer in 4k photo... huh? I guess the buffer runs out at several minutes worth... also you need to use manual focus in selfie mode... the sony is better in this regard. And why did you slam the gx85 for not having a mic input yet you never seem to use it anyway with your "sparrow" rig?

What's the effective sensor size at 4K? I wish Sony/Pan would make a 4.5k 4:3 full sensor readout video file. This would allow for cropping and finishing in 4K and even panning in 1080p and 2.5k
