This is by far the best review of any compact camera I have seen on KZbin. The reason: your explanations are clear, concise, terse and intelligent. This is an object lesson to most other reviewers who let themselves get in the way of the review, or who do not properly demonstrate what they are talking about. @@MaartenHeilbron Hi. ive noticed in vlogging, even when the camera is set to face detection it does sometimes have trouble locking on and instead focuses on the background behind me. Can you please tell me what settings are best please? For example is face detect better paired with afs, aff, or afc? Thanks in advance.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
@@TheyCallMeJesse I would suggest manual for blogging, as the distance from camera to you is fairly constant. If you need auto focus use continuous, with a single spot placed on your face. That way when the face detect fails, it defaults to the spot and not the background.

What a fantastic review. Love that you START by diving right into what it looks and sounds like rather than spending a lot of time baiting us for the rest of the video or diving right into the technical. At the end of the day, the first thing I want to know is a) does it look good and b) does it sound good. AFTER that, if I'm still interested, I'll want the tech specs, menu dives, etc... which is exactly what you did. If this camera were just a little less expensive, I'd jump on it as a replacement for my amazing Canon S120, but given the quality and features, I suspect it will stay up in that range.

Thanks Marteen, your knowledge, presentation and humor is much appreciated. Your archives are a huge help and will remain so for future photographers as long as these devices keep working. I don't think I'll be able to pick out jpgs from 1" vs. MFT (or newer smartphone magic) consistently in a blind test. Not sure it matters either. Having tested the ZV-1 this summer it's peculiar to end up here and find the same point and shoot hall of fame still unmatched, most of them seem to be at least five years old now: LX10, LX100 (II), ZS/TZ100/200, RX100, GX 5/7 II/III - is that all? The same basic challenge re. image quality, handling, features remains to this day. As I commented on Hugh Brownstone's (3bmep) LX100 II review there isn't really anything else like it and even the smallest MFT or APSC combos will never be as compact nor with a better spec'd control surface. Leica renewed it this spring as D Lux 8 as you're probably already aware. Your excellent RX100 series demonstrates a related hard fact, one may add a grip and then figure out how to setup the front ring and the tiny buttons and/or touchscreen as preferred. I've tested something similar on the TZ100 now and it's doable though not entirely pleasant but miraculously (decent +200mm collapsible zoom!) it fits more or less any pocket ever made. I was also glad to learn that a fixed LCD isn't that much worse in practical use. Millions of photographers before us seems to agree :) I'm curious to try out the LX10 one day, they are quite rare around here now so it may never happen. Shame about the mic jack and HDMI limitations, even the TZ100 feeds live view (not clean, but almost). I'll probably end with a RX100 VII, they are steady at €1000-ish on MPB to this day, not sure why Sony abandoned that series.

Thanks. But with the look at the size and the comfortability of the camera. At the moment I have the Sony RX-100 I. Until now it did quite a good job for me. But I want a camera that can record in 4k, so I'm considering one of those mentioned. I guess the GX850 might be the best camera, but always carrying the lenses is a killer for me. At my travels I was was used to take the camera in my pants pocket which made me pretty fast in preparation of taking videos and photos. So the question should be: which camera in compact camera size would you recommend? I would tend to the LX 100 because of the big four thirds sensor but i don't like the accessory flash which you have to install first.

Hi Maarten! Thanks a lot for the video, learned a lot. So the last week I have been trying to figure out what camera to get and the competition is between the LX10 and the G7X mark II. Important, I don't care for video features, only stills. The reason I would prefer the G7X is the nicer grip in the front and possibly better interface (I see myself as a beginner). The reasons I would go with the LX10, are some things I've read but are difficult for me to confirm, so hopefully you're view can clear this out for me. Some say the LX10 delivers sharper images, also has better and faster AF and is way better in for macro photos. I will mostly shoot outside during hikes, all the advice is welcome, thanks a lot! :) Also, can I shoot in RAW when in Auto mode with both of these camera's?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words, they're always appreciated. They are both good choices, and you're stated good reasons for preferring each. I'm surprised to hear that some think the LX10 is better for macro - although it doesn't have a "macro" mode, the G7X-2 has a much closer (5cm) focus distance, which I think gives it the advantage. (I return cameras after the review, so I can't take them out to compare.)
@Wouter64317 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the quick response Maarten, and yes credit where credit is due, your review is the most detailed on KZbin. And well the LX10 would, if I'm right have a focus distance of 3 cm. But apart from macro, you also feel that the images of the Panasonic are sharper than? If that is the case, I will sacrifice the better grip and DIY something for it :)
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
always my pleasure. Someone more discerning than me might perceive some difference, or maybe it can be measured with a studio chart - but I just reviewed my images from both and find them equally sharp and detailed.

A very nicely in depth look. I wonder when manufacturers will start to add mic ports or usb to mic adapters? I’m currently deciding whether to add to my camera collection. I’m enjoying creating photo diaries of my children’s lives. I have a fuji x70. Colours are amazing and so is the picture quality. Focus can be a little iffy. Don’t really want a mirror less camera. So deciding between the LX10/15, LX100 and G7xii. Currently swaying to the LX100 because of the larger sensor. Tough decisions

Great review! Just ordered mine yesterday to have it for my Daughters Graduation. Smartphones are good for a pinch but if you want to enlarge they look like crap. I probably won't use 70% of the phones functions but the 4k film looks to be promising when you can pick a frame after to chose a pic from it. I know the pic will only be 8 mp but will it be OK to enlarge to a 5x7 picture with good quality? Also, I found to aftermarket add ons for a ND filter. Magfilter and lensmate. Which one is a better choice?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. That is a useful feature, however, the shutter speed for video (1/60) is rarely ideal for capturing a still - so I would not raise my expectations too high, there will need to be a compromise. Enlarging 8Mp to 5x7 is not an issue. I'm afraid I have no experience with either brand. My only recommendation is to stay away from variable ND and to do a custom white balance after the filter is mounted. I find even the good ones have some colour shift and it varies depending on the lighting situation.

Hi Maarten! Thank you so much for producing this great, informative and instructional video. I just bought the LX10 in 2019 for a dive trip. This little camera gets amazing reviews by the dive community. But they are not good about sharing their knowledge for settings or camera features and how to use them inside an underwater enclosure. So, I am reaching out to you hoping you can help me with a couple of questions. 1) Long around 7:51 minutes into your video, you are talking about the great focus features of this camera. Being able to move the focus area around on the screen is of particular interest to me. But I cannot find how to do that without using the touch screen. Obviously the touch screen will not be available to me underwater. Can you advise me on how to do this with buttons, the menu, or the controller? 2) I would like to figure how to set the camera up with back button focusing like is on my Canon 5D M3. Is this possible? It would be fantastic to be able to move the focus area to exactly where I want it, and then to be able to have the camera focus before pushing the shutter. The small creatures, and fish obviously move around a lot! Basically, I would like the ability to focus, recompose and shoot. But I can't figure how to manage it on this little camera. Again, can you advise me? Thank you so much in advance. Yours have been hands down the best video instruction I've found.

Excellent review Martin! Question: I have the LX10 and, on aperture priority mode (A), I'm not able to adjust the aperture value by using the rear dial. I can only ajust it using the aperture ring. Is that OK? I thought I could use both. Thanks.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. Answer: Yes, that's the design - there's not even a customization possible to use the rear dial for aperture. Of course, traditionally, there would be a (marked) aperture ring on the lens.
@marianoboccalon88307 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your prompt answer Maarten, I really appreciate you have the time to do it. Regarding the LX10 I'm a bit dissappointed I can not configure that dial. Anyway I'm looking for a new camera with a better image quality than the lx10. Which one you recommend for street & family indoor photography with practically the same portabiliy of the lx10? I'm becoming a fan of your reviews!!! Keep doing them!
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Maybe a Fuji? They have several pocket sized cameras with APS-C sensors, and might be what you're looking for?
@marianoboccalon88307 жыл бұрын
Yes, Fuji has several options. Do you think I could see an improvement in the image quality (mostly on .jpg) between the lx10 and a Fuji X70, for example?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Well, you'd have to look elsewhere for detailed comparisons (dpreview, CNet) but in my view the larger sensor and Fuji's better than average lens quality would improve image quality.

What a fantastic review of all the features that can help decide whether or not to consider a camera. Awesome! Like many before me have said - clear, concise, focussed, and in a soothing, reassuring voice. This sets the benchmark for product reviews. One query: The FZ300 has in its flash menu the ability to wirelessly control an off camera flash. Does this have it to? I'm not expecting it in this camera segment, but would be great to have considering there is no hotshoe.

I want to upgrade from iPhone to learn about photography to shoot manual, I like the aperture ring on this camera but not sure if this is a great camera for that purpose, was plan to get XE3 with 16-55mm F2.8 but the best camera is the one with you, so I guess this is a great camera for that purpose too since its small, has aperture ring and should be great quality and has zoom lens, right? How about the 24mm wide in FF term, is it really as wide as 24mm on FF? Shoot indoor tight space, architecture and landscape is no problem?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Nearly all cameras are great for the purpose if you've been shooting with an iPhone (not that there's anything wrong with that). It's not usually a problem - but do consider the 16mm if you're worried.

Can you recommend the similar or a good camera to buy in 2024/2025? Thankyou so much

This style of small camera based on a 1 inch sensor seems to be out of fashion. The Sony RX100 models are mostly the best of this group, but this Panasonic model and the Canon GX models are worth considering. As they are older models, maybe a used one will keep you in your price range.

Maarten. Thank you for this review. May I add a perhaps enhanced comment. I was seriously looking at the Ricoh GRIII and have done much research before it has even been released. Let me compare and I will let your followers decide. LX15: 24 - 72 zoom lens, check. 1.4 aperture, check. In built flash, check. Touch screen, check. No heating up of the touch screen, check. Tilting, although not fully articulated screen, check. Longer battery life, check. In camera RAW processing, check. 4K video, check,. Half the price of the GRIII, check. 20MP, who needs 24MP for social? Check. The LX15 is even smaller than the GR III but the GR is slightly slimmer. In body stabilisation, check. I have done pixel peeking with the LX15 as I have it and there is some noise at higher ISO`s. The real test will be image quality but I find it hard to spend £800 when it appears that the LX15 is far superior in many ways. Time will tell. And I look forward to your review of the Ricoh GRIII.

Thanks for your note and the detail ... it's not on the to-do list as my relationship with Ricoh isn't very good, but may be improving. Not sure why you feel these two warrant a side-by-side feature comparison.

Great video! Is this camera good for portraits? Because I am in desperate need of the best portraits camera (better if compact) at max 400 euro
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
Cameras with small sensors and fixed lenses are rarely ideal for portraits. I don't think the best portrait camera can be purchased for that price. For portraits, the ideal camera would have an APS-C or larger sensor with a 50-85mm prime lens with a wide aperture (F2 or larger).

Hello, if I can ask, which one would you prefer, Canon G7X Mark II or Panasonic LX10? I have never recorded a video with my camera, so Canon should be a better option in my opinion, since it has better zoom for all around camera, but this 4k Photo futures seems to be really interesting. I'm also thinking about GX850, but I has no image stabilization and lenses with IS are really expensive. I found Olympus E-PL7 but I seems to me to be too big for everyday camera. Which one would you choose please?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Olympus EPL9 too big? And I think you may be putting too high a value on image stabilization. I would not dismiss the GX850 on that count. Honestly, I'm not sure which one I'd pick from the G7X II or the LX10 - both have their good points and deficiencies. Make the choice based either on features or otherwise go with the one that feels better in your hand or that you like the look of best.
