I am looking into getting the S5iix because of the features like recording to SSD. I have two 512GB Samsung T5 SSDs from my days of shooting with the BMPCC4K. Plus, I already have mounts for attaching the SSDs to a cage. Being able to shoot with these SSDs will allow me to record in ProRes and raw and not worry about storage space. So, I've already made the investment into SSDs and won't add to the cost of obtaining the S5iix. And the difference in price is well worth it.

Please share the solutions you have found for the ssd mounts. I'm struggling to get a decent answer and I think using an ssd is another good reason to buy the s5iix.

Built in Encoder for streaming is a pretty big deal like GH5ii. Honestly s5 ii X is only $200 USD dearer is unbelievable.

I agree. If I have a project that requires shooting in PRHQ, BRAW or all I etc it'll be a big enough budget to hire proper cinema gear and a crew as I do on all high end jobs. I probably won't be taking out a $3k hybrid camera in a cage with an SSD attached to the side of it. For 98% of the work I do the S52 has codecs that are overkill as it is.

I think the biggest reason people are returning s5ii for s5iix's is because even if you don't use these features right now it's nice to have and the fact it's only 200 dollars more, not 500 or 1000 which they could have easily done. and if you decide to sell the camera later youl have an easier time if it's the X version.

You make a fair point. Like s5iix will be my first mirrorless camera, and I'm trying to decide if i should buy it or the s5ii. And as much as I wont be using some of those features if I'm gonna spend about 2k on a camera and $200 more is gonna give me some stuff to grow into..then why not ya know?

I used prores Everytime I shot, used it today for shoot using SSD and love it with s5iix. Open gate full frame is a game changer! Still even love and use our gh5 also though with external recorders for prores 4k60

I didn't care about any of the other specs on the S5 IIx, but isn't all-i useful? You can create proxies, but how much easier are all-i clips to edit on machine vs. LongGOP clips? I do have a high end computer btw.

All-I is a waste of time for me. My iMac chews through all of the codecs without any problems without the massive file sizes. You probably won't see much benefit either by the sounds of it.

I watched a video the other day that compared the the AI to LG on action shots and there was almost no noticeable difference in quality and with M1 and M2 Macs these days the added compression / decoding is not really an issue. The only thing you would notice is the extra cost for storage.

You say you don't need raw video footage but raw footage is much better to colour grade and adjust, right? I don't understand how a professional does not need that

It depends on your use case. If you need it, then you know what's best for you. Most people think they need a lot of high end specs when they don't even have a workflow for it sorted out.

BUT, SSD recording would be neato except have you seen some people get dropped frames using with the Black Magic cams. That would suck!

The T5 and T7 shield works best on Pocket Cinema cameras. The regular T7 heats up and throttles down write speed.

It's not an easy choice! I think full frame for the studio and for low light and M43 for everything else.

AF and sensor size aside, would you say moving from a GH5M2 is a side grade or upgrade?

It's a big upgrade in every way except for rolling shutter performance. You get better dynamic range, shallow depth of field (if important), better lens selection with the matching S series. Those lenses totally changed my mind for L-Mount, it's great. It used to be that m43 had better IBIS, but the S5II is one of the best ever.

Literally lied in the recent video about SSD recording. The Sigma fp series can record photos and video to SSDs. What a dumb mistake from an L Mount partner.
