I have both cameras. IMO the GH5S is the better camera. It's just more usable in more situations. In V log you get max DR @ 800 and 5000 ISO. Whare as the GH5 is 400-800. The GH5 is usable until 1600 ISO. Once you add Speedbooster both camera really comes alive. But I prefer the GH5S. The GH5s is different to work with. In some conditions, you'll be at 5000 ISO with ND filters. It's not that is better than a Sony camera in low light. Its that you get that max DR in more conditions. Its like 2 cameras in 1. Also, I've shot maybe 10 photos with the GH5 and 0 with the S. So I've never needed more resolution. BTW keep the FPS @180 on the GH5S.

You guys definitely missed the Dual ISO feature. The single most important part of the GH5S. It's not just low light it to get max dynamic range in more lighting conditions. Also, the GH5 crops @180 fps and the GH5S crops @ 240. The GH5S tops out at 180 before the crop.

People keep saying that about the Dual ISO in the Panasonic cameras, but how often are you in a situation where you need a lot of dynamic range in low light? Only one I can think of is a concert. Thoughts?

When you're shooting productions or even wedding videos, You want the cleanest image possible. The GH5 has two choices for acceptable footage(lowest noise and most DR) 400-800. Whereas the Gh5S has 400-800,2500-5000. And you can even push it to 8000 in some cases. It's not about producing videos that have the most DR and the most color. It's about recording all that information and deciding how to best use it in post. Like shooting RAW for stills, Keeping the camera within its best range just allows you to push or pull it further.

Great video...it reinforces my decision to go with the GH5...I do a lot of documentary style, on foot, no sliders, dollies, etc. and that stabilization I just can't do without. Major game changer for me. Thanks for the comparison!

Some great info in this thread - here is another tip - when shooting at 120 -180 frames shoot shallow depth of field - this stops the codec from getting overloaded as its not trying to resolve as much detail into the Mbs available. At 120 and below the codec copes just fine and is sharp as. These slo motion modes are great for fake dollies and slide moves that you can do handheld in an instant -

I never intended to use my GH5s for stills but I'm taking some photography classes and I thought my t3i would be the better camera but the GH5s blew it out of the water. Then I noticed my images even look better than my classmate's A7riii. Even when we print. The GH5s is so underrated as a stills camera. Megapixel doesn't equal quality. Thanks for the video.

Good review! I own both cameras and another major difference is the color science in the GH5S is much better than the GH5. And the crop factor is huge too. That 12-35mm lens that most GH users own suddenly gives you a super wide option.

The price difference is $500 to $800 so GH5 for me. You can also buy a decent lighting setup and still make out better.

The price point does help to make the decision for some cameras, but we wanted to make sure to compare the specs to really see which one would be the most worth it given the price point.

The artifacts of the 240 fps footage seems not noticeable for online video. So I guess if your target is social media it won’t be a big issue.

the GH5 is not cropping. the GH5s is a bigger sensor. you also need to consider that a m43 sensor is 1/4 the size of a FF sensor so a 10MP in terms of pixel density is like a 40MP FF camera. Will they compete? obviously not, but it partially explains why a 10MP m43 image looks better than you'd expect. Also no camera's 120fps motion looks amazing. That said to the best results Panasonic VFR needs to be set properly. This is also the first I've seen of the GH5s getting softer as the ISO increases. NR needs to be set at -5 otherwise it's going become overly aggressive. It really doesn't look like the camera is set up correctly. cheers.

When we say "cropping," we mean it's cropping the lens circle. Also good tip about the NR. I think I set it to 0 because I didn't know it went below that. What does "negative" NR even mean? Haha. Also, I've seen some great 120fps out of cameras like the Alexa, Red, Phantom... Heck even the C200 has really nice 120fps in my opinion ;)

If you do documentery work, the gh5 is just a very versatile. If you have something where 180p slow motion is needed to show something, you have it. If you have to push it, because you whant to grab the Interview in a bad lit room, you get ist soft, but you get it.

The A7S II is an 8 bit 4 2 0 camera max and has limited record time. How low light do you need? Frankly I have the Canon C300 M2 and the GH5s and an old used GH4 and frankly the GH5s really gives the Canon a run for its money. As well, CINEGAL on KZbin has done a test with the GH5s and the Alexa mini and frankly , because she clearly knows what she's talking about, she shows how the GH5s can produce some pretty compelling images to rival the 40 thousand plus Alexa. The challenge with these cameras is the form factor so you do need to do something about the grip and beef it up a bit. Audio is obviously not pro on either of these but if that is the most you are giving up then I still think this is a huge bargain with either camera . You will need a speedbooster of some kind to make this a killer camera but now the VIltrox is under 200 bucks so its a no brainer. There is really no need to buy the Sony in my mind... 8 bit and limited record time just makes it impractical .. But that is just my two cents.

Hey Mikko - agreed. We liked the image stabilization too. It's one of those things you never knew you needed until you do...and then you can't live without it. 😪 it's a rough life.

False. You're no pro obviously. I've never used in body stabilisation. We use rigs all the time and the worst combination you can have is using a IBIS activated GH5 with a Gimbal like Movi for instance. Image is wavy. Not usable. Too much stabilisation kills stabilisation. So take that silly idea out of your head and do not give people false assumptions. It's because pro and semi pro wanted a GH5 without the forced stabilisation that the GH5s came up.

Disagree. I take the low light capability anytime against the lack of IBIS. IBIS can be replaced more efficiently by a gimbal, a crane, a slider. Low light sensor cannot. Period. GH5 is for people who want as you said a crossover and are NOT related to the video business. GH5S is dedicated to video pros that own loads of extra stuff to compensate for the lack of IBIS. Look ARRI and the like. IBIS or Low Light? Auto focus or Follow Focus? This is not the same club.

Maybe you should take a look at gimbal/slide cam footage comparisons with and without IBIS... And both GH5 and GH5S have a horrible low light performance anyway.

You guys missed one thing. The color is different between the two. GH5S actually has better color reproduction. Almost, ALMOST canon like colors.

GH5s over the GH5. I have had both but sold my GH5 and plan on getting a second. The IBIS is only good for relatively stable hand held, but if you want to try any sort of lateral sweeping cinematic type movements, the IBIS becomes very wavy and the footage is unusable. I have found myself in 10x more situations with poor lighting than places I need IBIS and that is where the GH5s is king. Remember a camera is a specific tool for a job, If I am going to shoot photograpghs, I go with my full frame canon w canon L glass. If I am shooting film, I shoot GH5 with voightlanders, they are the best thing for m4/3. With the Gh5s you can get away with "slow" glass as you can bump the ISO. With the GH5 or Gh4, unless shooting in good light or Voightlanders .95, you are screwed or will get to much noise.

@@TheSlantedLens I'm a new KZbinr with another channel called "britishnomad" At present I film with Lumix G7 but planning to upgrade. As you guys presented good scenarios thus for me GH5 with IBIS is important since I don't primarily use gimbal or a Steadicam. However I shall be using canon EF lenses with Viltrox adapter. So any stabilization is good so that I have less to do in post.. Great videos and keep it up. You two make a good duo.. cheers!👍
