The breadth of equipment you are familiar with is amazing! Some people specialize in vintage, some in modern, but you do them all. Not many folks have that skill level. The vintage folks tend not to appreciate the engineering that goes into modern gear, because all they see is the materials are not what they were, say, in the 1950's. Very cool!

I like the vintage tube radios only from a historical perspective. Worth preserving but I don't listen to my antique radios much. Turn them on to make sure they work and then unplug them. I do use a modern tube amp to listen to because I like the sound. Other than that i prefer new tech. Much cleaner than any of the old stuff. Even vinyl. A well mastered CD on a proper high end CD player will run circles around vinyl. I know I just got all the vinyl nuts out there all pissed off but facts are facts. No analog system can compare to digital because there are so many variables in vinyl. Temperature, humidity, when was the last time the record was played, number of plays, needle wear, needle pressure, needle size and shape compared to groove width. These all affect the sound. Digital is perfect every time. CD player quality makes a difference. A 500 player is going to sound much better than a 50 player.

Another VCR repair video - awesome. You must have a room full of these. I once was handed a Panasonic NV-HD670A (made in Japan around 1998/99 for Australia/NZ) to look at with a 'wobbly/shaky playback picture on screen' fault - lots of troubleshooting confirmed in the end that it wasn't due to any bad solder joints, but a worn direct drive drum/cylinder assembly turned out to be the culprit. Unfortunately, the lower cylinder was not available separately to the upper heads; the only way to obtain it was to order both parts together as a single unit, and usually at trade cost + shipping.. The lower cylinders are not meant to be repairable - the whole drum assembly must be replaced at the same time. This made the job easier as there was no soldering involved - not to mention quicker. Everything worked after a clean-up and alignment check. Audio - excellent. Picture - great. All modes functioned properly. It had G-Code but no one uses that anymore. Naturally, I removed the auto head cleaner pad as these can damage heads once they become dirty and hard, binned the old drum, and handed the machine back to the owner. Even today, I'm still learning something new each time. Your videos inspire me to dabble in small things on a quiet Sunday. Thank you. :)

And you were only telling us about this fault last week, a perfect example of "Crackus Solderus" :-D My frend had a faulty computer monitor, the crt type, it was going mad colour wise. I told him to look at the parts on the neck board for solder cracks. The silly arse ignored me and replaced the drive chip, made no difference. He brought just the neck board to me, within seconds i found loads of cracked solder joints, he took it back home and it worked perfect. He is mentally blind, it was crack city lol.

If the picture shows some lines, as if the head is dirty, but the head drum isn't dirty. It means the head drum has worn out, or it could also be a driver IC? Any video on your channel where you changed a head drum? Thanks.

Yes I have changed head drums on both VHS and Beta machines, and even did an 8mm.

I keep running into top end pro VTRs that have been badly cigarette hot boxed. The last one a few months back was a JVC BR-S622dxu. It's the largest most advanced dual SVHS/SVHS-C editor/on air broadcast deck I've ever heard of (maybe 55 lbs). It's head drum was actually orange with cigarette deposit, worst I've ever seen. I used some of that "special old stuff" to clean it because I just couldn't get all of it off using alcohol without applying too much force near the heads. Once clean it had that usual banding of rough areas I've come to associate with cigarette contamination. I'm guessing that's from abrasive smoke particles. But next time I want to try alternating between ammonia glass cleaner and alcohol to see if it works at least half as well. The heads themselves seem to have plenty of life left (good RF on it's meter) and the performance is outstanding. Some agree it's not the best svhs ever made for picture quality but it sure looks like it should be from the outside. Watch out for very thin and easily broken cassette mechanism parts, in case anyone's looking for or fixing them. I don't want one but it was great to see it do it's thing.

Why didnt vcr mafucturers use the head drum to their advantage by fitting fan blades to the top of it? could keep the whole pcb cool.

@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
@@Synthematix Sony did that on the beta units that had the 3 piece drum. Sl 5000, 5020, 5200, 54, 56. 5800 ect. The drum was the main motor that drove the reels via a belt (except for 5200 which had a separate reel motor) it was actually there to blow air on the drum to help move the tape. Air pressure into the drum would pressurize the gap between the fixed and spinning head wheel. VHS used the entire top of the drum that spun. Those grooves on the head drum are to provide an air cushion.

@12voltvids - A little idea just popped into my head right now regarding a way to engage your audience more (if you like)... Well since you have been teaching us all about general repair of TV's and VCR's. Create a video testing your audience to see if they been paying attention. Then give the correct answer in a secondary video, also test out the wrong answers on the appliance for comedic value, lol.

@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
@@MsCori76 Tape wont be making any comeback. I predict that vinyls come back will be short lived. VHS was such a terrible format and it looks even worse on a flat panel. The only good a VCR is these days is to play old tapes for digitizing. Dont even get me started on vinyl. My son buys vinyl like it is going out of style. Spending thousands of dollars buying special edition copies signed by unknown artists (crap I mean rap, no, crap) buys it on vinyl and then wants me to record it so he can listen on his phone. Not uncommon to spend 150 for some record that makes me want to kill myself listening to it while putting it on a memory stick. I told him he should learn to do that himself but it is too much effort, just like learning to drive or getting an education. One day he is going to wake up and it will hit him in the face. A guy I know was the same way with movies. 50 years old, living with his mother. Had an entry level technician job at another shop. Didn't drive either. Would buy every movie on VHS. Then when DVD came out he bought the same movies on dvd. Then when bluray came out he bought them again. Haven't talked to him in probably 10 years now. Would be about 60 if he is still alive. Last time I saw him he said he had just over 9000 movies on bluray another 15000 on DVD and he threw away all his VHS. Oh I forgot he had laserdisk on there too but he gave those to me. About 200 disks I think. Will have to count them. 3 big heavy boxes of them. Anyway one day his mother died. He was like a lost child. No savings as he had burned every dollar on movies, electronics and cigarettes. Mother he lived with didn't own her place. Rented. Last time I talked to him, about 10 years ago he was trying to sell his movie collection to pay the rent as the shop he was a tech at let him go as they were closing their repair shop. See lots of that with young people these days. Cost of living so high. Especially here. One of the most expensive cities in the world here. Behind Hong Kong, Tokyo, and New York, but very expensive.

12voltvids - I haven’t bought any new vinyl yet, only have the records I got growing up as new releases can be expensive & it’s cheaper & much easier to download music off iTunes Music etc for phones & other music devices. I can’t believe that guy spent all that money on VHS & DVD’s, most of my VHS collection is recorded movies & shows off the tv & I only have a small collection of DVD’s as I have FOXTEL with lots of movie channels & Netflix.........I hope your son eventually comes to his senses about wasting his money on all that vinyl.
