This camera is objectively a better video camera than the A74 and its cheaper too. The AF might not be as good but it will improve with updates. Almost all other specs are either on par with the a74 or just plain better (like ibis, exposure tools, resolution options, & other menu options). I'm a Sony user and don't plan on switching due to the amount of sony lenses I already own. But pound for pound this camera is really good at that price.

Only problem is that you lose PDAF when you are shooting in slow motion for certain resolutions ... it ends up switching back to the contrast focus, which we all hate ... oh and 4k slow motion footage is cropped ...

As an A7IV shooter, I am impressed with how good the S5II is, and it’s their first gen PDAF. I see no compelling reason to go back to LUMIX, but for someone looking for a competent hybrid shooter, this seems to be well worth a hard look.

I've been using a Lumix G9 for 4 years. It does everything I need and of course I want a new camera. I have been seriously considering the Sony FX30 and abandoning Panasonic. But the S5II is intriguing. For $200 more, it offers far more capabilities than the APS-C FX30. Something to think about. I was really impressed with the lack of focus breathing of the S5 II combo. I know Sony has solved it in software with some of their lenses but I was surprised you didn't mention it because it was very gross on the Sony. Finally, your wife is a peach.

I think this is an amazing camera now, and agree that it will get better with firmware updates. Lumix cameras always do. I would not hesitate to buy it over the competition, not for any one reason, but for dozens and dozens of reasons. Since AF is no longer a deal breaker, it is time to focus on all of the other hybrid features the S5 II offers creatives. THIS is the camera I wish I could have bought in 2013 when I first started looking at mirrorless cameras.

I think the Lumix S5ii is at a point now where it's good enough for some applications. As a filmmaker where I can ask an actor to just 'do that scene again' this is absolutely good enough. But for something mission critical, like a wedding, I'd maybe not be as confident. The IBIS on the Lumix is probably the deciding factor here. From what I've heard and seen on youtube it's incredible for in camera stabilization.

Really good review! One thing I've noticed on all reviews of this camera, no one seems to like the port doors. I like them. I don't know what Sony or Canon are like, but I'm coming from Nikon, and I have to say the Lumix port covers are far better. Lumix has a metal pin for the hinge, with Nikon, it's one piece. It has a plastic hinge that eventually breaks or tears off. I waiting for my camera to arrive today. It's actually the 2nd one. The first one came from Amazon Renewal, and it turned out to be Japanese market camera, so I sent it back and the US model arrives today.

20:23 I believe it was a spec that it takes a while to start the camera at the beginning of the day. A Japanese KZbinr (theTakaTube) verified that if the camera is turned off for more than 12 hours, it will turn off completely to save battery power and will take longer to start up. It is similar to the difference between putting a computer to sleep or shutting it down. Just as you would put the computer in sleep mode if you want to start working on your computer immediately after a break, you can turn the camera on once beforehand if you need to start shooting immediately.

Could you do me a favor? I’ve asked a few people but can’t get an answer…. With the original S5 the focus peaking (manual focusing) would work well (on the rear screen) when shooting 1080, but when shooting 4K the peaking would not be as apparent. This is a known issue and I’m wondering if this is still the case with the S5 II

Considering the price, flight, hotel, etc. This is at least $10-15K per KZbinr, there were about what, 50 channels? That's a big investment for sure, but considering that they have such a good value and product, it was a risky but probably rewardful investment for Panasonic.

Great comparison, thanks! It looks the S5II is really improved a lot on autofocus. However, I have just bought the S5 4 months ago! ;) Since here must be a lot of S5 fans, I would like to borrow a little space to ask some questions, which confused me these days: I have connected my S5 to Ninja V and carry the camera on a DJI RS3 gimbal. As the S5 does not support blue tooth connection with the RS3, I connect the S5 to the RS3 with a USB-C cable, to use the red button on RS3 to start/stop recording. When I switch on all these 3 equipment, the monitor on S5 is off (How can I turn it on?), the Ninja V is on. At this point, the red button on RS3 does not work (why?). If I unplug the USB-C cable between S5 and RS3, both monitors on S5 and Ninja are turned on, but obviously there is no way to control the camera by using RS3. If I disconnect Ninja V and then connect S5 and RS3 with the USB-C again, the monitor on S5 works, and I can control the camera using the gimbal. It seems the 3 devices cannot work properly at the same time. Did I miss any settings? Many thanks in advance! 😄😄😄

Okay great video, just wondering why are you comparing a video camera made with a photo camera? Why are you not comparing s5 mark ii vs. Sony a7s iii? On KZbin, you can find hundreds of videos comparing first S5 with Sony A7s 3. Because of 1000$ difference? I will pay that 1000 for the differences that has Sony a7s3 over s5 ii. in 2023 4k 50/60 only in crop mode? Go back in 2018. I’m with Panasonic from GH4 era. I do have 2x S1 and 2 x Gh5, this release of s5ii make me realize how good is a Sony A7s iii.

Panasonic fall's into the old saying "A Day Late, And A Dollar Short", I have invested too much into Sony bodies and glass to switch. I started out with Canon ten years ago, then switched to Panasonic back when the GH-5 came out, then finally switched to the Sony A7III, then the A7SIII, and now have those plus an A7IV and an FX3. Add the thousands and thousands of dollars of glass ( probably around $14,000) on top of the thousands and thousands of dollars worth of camera bodies (around another $14,000), and like most I am now too invested in Sony to ever switch. Long term Sony out smarted the competition by creating both better bodies and glass years ahead of the competition. I do like the ergonomics of the Panasonic and their video centric options like shutter angle. But I am a one man show, so I need the reliability of Sony.

It blowsmy mind that cameras like the Sony a7IV can't load/display LUTs in camera..... The Sony a7iv should have remained $2000 like this or $2200 like the S5IIX that's coming. The S5IIX is gonna be the interesting part of this release. Those are the features people have been wanting.

No, any A7IV comparison AF test concludes that Sony is better. You made a mistake somewhere.

Ok, things based on your and several other people’s reviews so far Panasonic must: 1 - Continue improving AF algorithms, especially concentrating on Eye priority, 2 - They should figure out how to give us good eye autofocus and animal eye tracking in all the modes, including 4k60, 1080p120, etc., 3 - Absolutely must give us USB webcam option (UVC), ridiculous that it’s not a default in 2023, 4 - Give the ability to use both H264/H265 (and 4:2:0 or 4:2:2, whatever we prefer) in all the modes, 5 - The option to close the shutter when switching off the camera for sensor protection. The camera has already got the shutter, just put a software update and give people that option, like cmon. All of that must come free even before the delivery. Sure, have your another S5m2X model and charge 200 more for ProRes and Raw outputs, that’s pretty sensible, but above mentioned should be in S5m2 by default. Really good video, thank you for this detailed comparison vs Sony!

Last option is the worst. Cleaning sensor is less pricey than replace your shutter because dust kills it. I have A7IV and I don't use it.

@@rafanaluzie2062 Let’s agree that if you don’t wanna use it - just don’t use it, but I’d like to have that option. Replacing the shutter? Why the hell would I be breaking my shutter if all I want is for it to protect the sensor. I’m not a moron to poke my fingers into it.

@@Frytech if dust will be on a shutter, it can be a problem and can fail and scratch the sensor. It's not about user but more about enviroment. Cleaning sensor is cheaper and faster if you need it.

love the review and your wife (I assume it's her) is really funny. When I rented for test Fuji and Canon to check the autofocus, I asked mine to do the same. It was so difficult to convince her and she was all the time bored throughout the test. Please tell me the secret, did you spike her drink? :D

Sony keeping the focus on the person while they're holding up an object in front of their face isn't necessarily an advantage. If I'm holding something up to the camera IN FRONT OF MY FACE, it's pretty obvious that's what I want the camera to focus on. Otherwise I'd just use manual focus. Isn't "Product Showcase" literally the killer feature everyone loves on the Sony ZV-1? Isn't the S5II behaving more closely to that?
