The tip about using an external battery is a great one to share. I also hook up to a battery bank and can video for hours and I’m only limited by the size of the memory chip. The original battery and OEMs are way too expensive and short on time. Losing the power on a shoot is so frustrating, so I value the USB power cord feature of Panasonic camcorders. And thanks for informing us about the sun shade and audio, and the various add on options. This was the perfect video covering much of what I wanted to learn about higher end Panasonic camcorders without going into 4K models. Looking forward to seeing test footage with this camcorder.

Nope. No time marks / "burnt in" timestamps. Thats (badly) only available in the more expensive models nowadays ...

I discovered that if you record as AVCHD some kind of timecode down to minutes is stored as subtitles. So when I play in MPC-BE I get the timestamp overlaid which is perfect. It even works for timelapse videos

Well - I got it from the official Panasonic replacement support. It´s called SKY0602. For UK parts / delivery go to: www.pas-europe.com/ -> Click on "4K camcorder" -> Click on "HC-VX870EB" for example. Then you can see the replacement parts below. It´s listed as "LENS HOOD UNIT SYK0602" for £11.36 each. ^^

@AustrianGeek5 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Naja. LG

How do you get lens hood
@AustrianGeek5 жыл бұрын
There is for example the international replacements parts shop (and for the US I guess): panasonic.encompass.com/item/10293413/Panasonic/SYK0602/ - BUT: It seems like they don´t send under 200 dollars internationally. For India I would check out that site and search for a nearby service center (select digital AV and your location): www.panasonic.com/in/support/service-center-locator.html and try to ask if they can order it for you. You pay a few bucks more at those local stores - But those service points should be able to order it. Or just order it here - They have one pcs left: ebay.to/2m5emUz (27 dollars incl. shipment = 1934 rupies). Its taking some time to ship but at least its cheap ^^.

Link please to the power bank. Can't find it.
@AustrianGeek4 жыл бұрын
Hello there. Its just a cheap one from Amazon: amzn.to/2Ztky9K - You can go for every other power bank with 2A (or higher) 5V Output (the linked and in the video shown one offer 2.1A Output). You don´t need a super big one as the V770 / V777 is not consuming that much power (the original DC adapter uses 1.8A at 5 Volts). Just go for one which fits your needs and which you can also use for other devices in everyday situations. Or go for one, which is quite easy to mount to a tripod / which has a small bag included which you can hang from a tripod for example. Or which you can velco easily to a shoulder rig / your actual setup. Hope that helps to decide - Best wishes from Austria ^^.

Can you film and charge the camera at the same time?
@AustrianGeek3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I am sure to be honest, if its also charging the battery (as I don´t have the camcorder anymore). But IF its also charing the battery, it will be doing it very slowly (the DC adapter outputs around 9W of power and the camera consumes around 6 to 7W - So there is a maximum of 3W left for charging). I always used the internal battery as a "buffer" in case the external power faded / skipped. And the battery levels held up (so I guess the battery at least doesn´t get drained and it even held the charging level by powering the battery). Hope that helps. LG

Hi, can you show a video showing how to fit the sun shade onto the Panasonic V770 Model, because Panasonic says it does not fit. Thanks
@AustrianGeek7 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Actually I don´t have one of the Panasonic V / VX / VXF models here, to show you the mounting process in a video - Sorry. But it´s possible / working flawlessly (you can see it fitted on the V770 camcorder through the whole video) - Btw.: I also used the V770 in this shape for quite a while without any problems. So I know that it works for sure. Panasonic just doesn´t list the V770 / V777 models as officially compatible to the sunshade, because it´s not an original accessory (which you normaly get within the package for example). But as the body is the same, the lens is the same and also the sensor size is the same, it´s usable without any problems also on the V770 / V777 models (and also the V750 / V757 - Same there). ^^
@waynethompson38867 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks, I shall order one before the model & shade accessory get discontinued. Thanks for your help, and your accessory review video was very good.

Thx for the kind words. NORMALLY it should be still available for a longer period. I also tried one of the replacement sunshades I still have lying around on the new Panasonic VX981 / VX980 - Also fits like a glove. 1:1 still the same sunshade. So it should be still in their lineup of replacement parts for a while (as the VX981 / VX980 is quite new on the market) ^^.
@waynethompson38867 жыл бұрын
I havent bought the V770 yet I was going to order it today, however for a £100 more I can buy the PANASONIC HC-VX870. This model has 4k SHOOTING AND COMES WITH THE SUN SHADE HOOD IN THE BOX. So I think I will spend the extra and get this model.
@AustrianGeek7 жыл бұрын
Sure - Also an option. But (if you didn´t buy the VX870 aleady): Also check out the used prices of the newer VX981 model. It´s offering basically the same features - But adds 24P options to the 4K and 1080P recording modes. Sometimes thats quite nice (especially in 1080P mode), if you´re filming in darker situations. The VX870 only offers 60P in 1080P mode for example. And for that (higher frame) mode, you need more light to get a good image - As there are more frames per second recorded (with each frame getting less light). So you´re getting a better image of the VX981 in darker scenes (at least if you use it with the 24P mode) ^^. If you plan to shoot in 4K only, it´s not that important though ^^. Have fun shooting!

@AustrianGeek7 жыл бұрын
Hmm.

hi there, Just want to make sure that I am not looking at the wrong camera. The 770 and 777 do not come with a manual Focus ring but yours seems to have one or is that part of the sun hood?
@AustrianGeek7 жыл бұрын
I am sorry to say that - But it´s just the sunshade (mounting ring). The smaller panasonics always only offer the tiny control ring at the side (which you can also push to change different settings). Btw.: If you plan to shoot something which isn´t moving, you can also make a "push AF". Just switch on the AF for a short period of time and switch back to MF (in the touch screen menu). That way the camera focuses to the right point (and it´s then staying there as soon as you switch back to MF / manual focus). Though: MF is not really necessary that often. Only in low contrast scenes (when the AF struggles to catch the focus point). Otherwise the camera recognises faces for example nicely - But also the focus depth is quite huge (because of the small sensor). So not THAT much of a need for manual focus. On 1" devices its more important (Sony CX900/AX100 for example). Though skip on the AX100 - It´s completely oversharpened (for no reason) - And you cannot control the sharpness internally. The CX900 is good though. Just mentioning it, if you plan to upgrade to a 4K model in the future ^^. LG

As long as you use the supplied USB to DC cable - Sure. Though: I would suggest that you go for a power bank with an battery status LCD. The one in the video only comes with 4 LED indicators - And that´s just not precise enough (as its literally a 25% jump in battery status for each LED). Can you compare it to the TM900. I'm considering an upgrade from the tm900 to the v770 or v777.... Will this be an upgrade or should I stick with the tm900
@AustrianGeek7 жыл бұрын
Sorry. But I don´t have the TM900 here for a comparison. Just an V707 - Which is even older. Overall the V770 / V777 is quite ok and good for a 1080P camcorder. BUT I didn´t like a few points about it. So I upgraded to the VXF990 / VXF999 model (got it for just 450 bucks as a b stock from a dealer ^^). Why the VXF990/999: 4K is nice to have, SD card slot is mounted sideways unter the LCD screen (and not at the bottom of the body which is sometimes quite annoying), it offers an integrated flash-shoe (so theres no need for the plug-in adapter form the back) - PLUS: It offers a viewfinder and headphone out sideways (and not under the LCD screen). The 4K image is also quite nice - At least if you dial down the sharpness to -1. Just don´t oversee in general (and thats true for both - V770/770 and VXF990/999: The older models (like the V707/727 or your TM900) are built more robust. The newer models are quite "plasticky". So try out the models if possible before buying them. I also had to modify my VXF990 to get a more stable mount to use it on my gimbal. The older models are also out of plastic - But they are coming with thicker walls / just more material. Btw.: I would go for the VXF990/999 if you can find a used one at a bargain. It´s worth every cent over the V770/V777. Btw.: Also supports 24P and constant / all time slow motion (no need to press the slow motion button on the screen all the time like on the V770/V777. Hope that helps ^^.

Well - You need to be patient. From time to time there are used ones available on Ebay for example. About VXF990 vs AX53: Well - The Sony doesn´t offer full manual control. That´s the point why I didn´t went for it. And because I use the VXF990 on my Zhiyun Crane gimbal - So no need for better in camera stabilisation ^^. Beside: The VXF990 looks more professional too =)

How long does the battery take to charge and how lone can you record on that charge ?
@AustrianGeek7 жыл бұрын
Well - The internal charging isnt the fastest one. Sorry - Never measured the exact charging time. If you want faster charging you can also go for an external charger. About the runtime (its around 1.5 hours or so with the small included one). I use the double the size VBT380 model though most of the time (no 3rd party - the original one) - And that´s running WAY longer (around 3 to 3.5 hours). Altough I switched to the 4K VXF990 model (and its important if you record all the time or not). With the V777 / V770 model you should reach around 3.5 to 4 hours easily (with the original VBT380 battery). Btw.: Search for a good / like new VBT380 battery directly from Panasonic - Those are of a higher / better quality compared to the 3rd party batteries. Bout mine used on Ebay for example for around 40 bucks ^^.

@AustrianGeek3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Its always emptying the external power source first (as its like you connect the external wall plug power supply - Then its also taking the power from there first and maybe even charges the internal battery as long as the external power source is strong enough). Its switching then from the external to the internal battery as soon as that one is empty. You can also plug it in from the start. Its as mentioned like powering the camcorder from the original wall plug adapter (thats the nice point about it with the included USB Power-Plug as main power source ^^). LG

According the image quality? Well - They are quite similar. BUT dont oversee (if 1080P is "enough"): There is the newer V800 / V808 model from Panasonic - Which is offering the newer sensor, better stabilisation and the wider lens. PLUS: At 24P mode it seems to offer the full sensor readout (which SHOULD give you better image quality overall compared to the V770 / V777). Well - If you shoot in 4K (and downsample to 1080P in post) then you get a noticeably better image yes (with the VX980). Also essential is the sunshade which is already included - But not with the HC-V770 (costs about 20 to 30 bucks extra and efforts to get it overall). PLUS: The VX980 supports 24P - The V770 not (there you only get 60P in 1080 mode - With the VX980 you get both - 60P and 24P for more cinema-like recordings). I think it´s worth the higher price ^^.

Did you try the external Mic? I just got the V777 used from ebay, together with a Rode Videomic Go. That one works fine. But for some Videos I'd like to use a clipon Lavalier Mic. The one I have works perfectly recording Voice on iPhone. Sadly there is no sound recorded when plugging in to the V777. What can be the reason behind that? How to recognize a Lavalier Mic that could work? Thx for your help
@AustrianGeek6 жыл бұрын
Sure. I used multiple directional mics (and also one of my sennheiser lavs on it). About your lav mic: Keep in mind, that the pin layout is for your iPhone and for other 4-pin devices (also tablets and notebooks with only one combo-port for the mic input - BUT also for the headphones left and right channels output). The point is: The V777 has only a standard 3.5mm 3 pin stereo-mic input. To be precise, the pin layout is (counted from the tip / end of the plug): "Left (MIC) - Right (MIC) - Ground" (so you can even use stereo mics on it). On your lav on the other hand you have the combo port pin layout for your iPhone. So you should have 4 pins (beginning from the tip / end of the plug): "Left (headphone) - Right (headphone) - Ground - MIC (mono)". Therefor you don´t get any signal to the right pins. You need one of those cable adapters - Then it should work. To make it easy, go for the "RODE SC3" adapter: amzn.to/2IR8ENf Its exactly what you need ^^. With that you can also use the LAV on any other mobile audio recorder with 3.5mm 3-pin input. Have fun shooting! LG

Wow, Great Info. Panasonic helpline was not helpful at all and just said „not tested/certified accessory“ pointing me to one of their mics (130€ / $150) If I understand correctly, what I need is in general a TRRS to TRS Adaptor. Thanks for your fast answer, seems I know now what to look for 😊👍

@@TelespielTobi Well - Typical manufacturers support. They want to sell their own stuff ^^. So they recommended one of their standard 3.5mm (3 pin) mics. Yep. You need a TRRS to TRS adapter (with the right pin layout). As mentioned, the easiest way is to go for the Rode SC3 as its quite cheap (not super cheap - but affordable) and gives you a short adapter with an angeled 3 pin plug (which fits everywhere). Standard adapters are often too bulky (the ones without cable). Btw.: Also go for the SC3, as the pin layout of normal TRRS to TRS adapters is for connecting stereo audio (output) only (often the mic is then just not connected). What you need though is a re-reouting of the mic to the main pins ^^. LG

so this WILL fit the PANASONIC HC-V770 Full HD Camcorder, 20X Optical Zoom, 1/2.3" BSI Sensor, 5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S., HDR Capture, WiFi Smartphone Twin Video Capture (USA Black) PANASONIC ?

In short: YES - The V770 is just the NTSC model - The V777 the PAL model (here in Europe for example). Btw.: Don´t oversee - The sunshade is called "SYK0602" and not "SKY0602" as I said in the video ^^. Have fun shooting (!) LG

what software do you use to combine the MTS for a lossless output? thanks
@AustrianGeek7 жыл бұрын
You can use for example FFMPEG (over the console) to merge the files (just serach / google for "FFMPEG MTS merge"). BUT: You get wrong timecodes doing that without a re-encode (so jumping around in the file could make problems when using certain players). The best way is, to convert the file to MP4 - also using FFMPEG. And then merge those files. Or just throw the files into an NLE (Premiere, DavinciResolve or FinalCut Pro etc.) when cutting it. Just keep the files in the right order. Another for sure better solution: Change the camera to MP4 mode. That way you get bigger files and it´s not splitting every 4 gigabytes into a new MTS file (which is the case in the AVCHD mode). PLUS: If you choose the 50M Mode (which offers 50MBits) you also get better image quality when there´s alot of movement or fine details in the scene ^^. LG

I am looking to buy a second camera. I have the 750 and am very satisfied with the image quality. That said, there are things we have to mention that are not so great on these camera's and I think the newer ones have the same quirks. But more about that below. I bought a second hand 720 and that was a failure. The image quality is so much worse. So now looking for at least another 750. Your video helped a lot. Thank you for that. Also thank you for the accessories thoughts. I am a bit crazy and my accessory built up went a bit nuts as can be seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2Kcaq2CrdB-jtU I use the v750 semi-professional but then adjustments are needed. The two worst points of the 750 are the zoom controller and the manual focus controller. I have no solution for the 'not direct working' focus controller but luckily the camera has a real good working fast auto focus system. Controlling the zoom is a pain. I usually only want the slowest zoom but the button is extreme sensitive. The button can only be moved a few millimeters otherwise you go to faster zoom which hurts the eye always. This requires extreme concentration and dedication of your hand which should be dedicated to concentrating on the composition. I build a Arduino servo zoom controller to tackle this problem. I am afraid the newer v770, 777, etc etc have the same problem as the button was never changed as far as I know. Indeed the audio is not good but it has always been bad in consumer priced camera's. I think even the newer ones cannot compete a dedicated audio recorder and if you are serious about video, be sure you get your audio right. Audio is the most important thing of a video :) And yes, you are so right. Never buy a panasonic extra battery. They are shameful expensive. Heck I bought this v750 camera for three reasons: 1:The rather large sensor and good lens. 2:Possibility to set everything to manual. 3:External mic IN connector. 3:The possibility to power using an external usb source (Battery pack). For its price I think the 750 still is a great camera. I'll try a 777 becasue of your video. I also agree that an even smaller hdmi is downgrading. Connectors are the most fragile parts of a camera. Getting a smaller type makes it weaker just like you said. Keep up the good work. Greetz from the Netherlands
