We are investigating the Tornado, an excellent strike aircraft, an old-school interceptor, and a nightmare for the air defence systems. #tornado #aviation #luftwaffe
Due to some copyright issues, we had to remake our Panavia Tornado video.
Why did leading European countries decide to work together on a combat aircraft, such as the Tornado?
Why did the aircraft not achieve noteworthy success in the international market?
What are the histories of the Tornado IDS, Tornado ADV, and Tornado ECR?
What are the combat experiences of the aircraft?

Welcome to our new content. As the Weapon Detective, we are investigating modern weapon systems of the Second Cold War. The Weapon Legends is about the older weapon systems. We tell their epic stories, which made them a legend. The Weapon Legends investigates these stories, reads between the lines, analyzes, and tells the untold. You can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let the wisdom of history show us what the future will be. Let’s investigate the veteran weapons of the past together.

👏 lovely video. The RAF did ( in my own opinion) get rid of the ' TONKA' quite prematurely. Very fortunate to fly in the back seat of an F3. And i didn't need a sickbag lol

One correction. In your video you say that the RAF was the only air force that used the ADV variant. However that is not accurate as both the Royal Saudi Air Force and the Italian Air Force also operated this variant. In the case of the Royal Saudi Air Force they ordered 24 Tornado ADVs alongside 48 Tornado IDSs under the first Al-Yammanah order. However, dissatisfaction with the ADVs in Saudi service meant they did not order any more. They operated them between 1989 to 2006. In the case of the Italian Air Force they leased 24 ex-RAF Tornado F3s from the UK between 1995 to 2004 as an interim measure to supplement Lockheed F104ASA Starfighters until they could be replaced by Eurofighters in the 2000s.

Because we're talking about just the RAF Tornado ADVs, we caused a wrong perception. Sorry about that. However, we have already used the footage of Italian ADVs in our video.

Impressive fighters. First time I saw video of one in action, it was flying real low over the Iraqi desert in 1991. Made me hold my breath, anticipating a crash any moment but of course it didn't.

seems like the low altitudine penetration concept has an high atrition of war considering F111, Tornado and SU24
@sichere
@sichere 3 ай бұрын
The concept worked in Iraq and it was the RAF Tornado that ensured total air supremacy by taking out the heavily defended airfields. In Green Flag the Tonkas jamming pod made the aircraft invisible to Radar.
@TakumiFujiwara80
@TakumiFujiwara80 3 ай бұрын
@@sichere Come on... Air supremacy was achieved by incessant CAP by f15. The first days of tornados attacking airport has an unacceptable rate of loss, that's why tornado was moved from low level bombing to medium altitudine.... With more SEAD preparation the same airfield denied could has been achieved from medium altitudine. low level loss could only accepted with a strong enemy like russia... There is a reason why low level bombing is not a pivot strategy anymore. Is another card to play, but not cardinal anymore with stealth platform.
@sichere
@sichere 3 ай бұрын
@@TakumiFujiwara80 The Americans did not have the capability to penetrate Iraqi AD an take out airfields. The F15's brought air Superiority but not Air Supremacy. Things are different now but at the time the Tonka was the only weapon system capable of achieving the goal.

Are you sure about the 7 hardpoints for the IDS? Under each wing, 2 plus 1 for a short range AAM, 4 or 5 (I’m not sure if there is a central point) under the fuselage = 10 or 11.

Not a bad low-level strike aircraft but RAF tactics were wrong in the 1991 Gulf war, the attacks too predictable and continued despite losses. As for the Tornado F3, it successfully did its mission, which was long range interception over the ocean. It carried a good weapon load and had a long loiter time.
@iatsd
@iatsd 10 ай бұрын
In what way were the attacks too predictable and what should have happened following the first losses? If you choose to answer, bear in mind that every other AF refused to perform the missions and only the French had non-Tormado aircraft in theatre that were capable of completing the mission role.
@billballbuster7186
@billballbuster7186 10 ай бұрын
@@iatsd I think the low-level operations were a disaster in flat desert conditions were aircraft could be easily seen. The amount of tripple-A was also a factor and IADS was still operating Five aircraft lost in the first six days was very bad press. Only one loss after thr RAF switched to medium level missions during thr rest of the campaign.
@iatsd
@iatsd 10 ай бұрын
@@billballbuster7186 First, you clearly haven't ever looked at the terrain because it is nothing like flat around the areas where the Tornado were operating. Second, you equally clearly haven't ever tried to locate, let alone track, and strike aircraft flying at less than 30 metres at 450+ knots, with the strikes coming from 2-3 different directions. Lastly, "very bad press"?! It's not a publicity campaign, it was a fvcking war. There were always going to be losses. If you look at the post-op analysis, it was the case that the first pair in any strike package ALWAYS made it through. That shows the tactics worked. It was ALWAYS the follow up pairs that were suffering the losses - an that's hardly surprising given that the defences knew they were incoming by that stage and could simply engage in sector fire which no aircraft can evade. They switched to higher alititude once they had achieved their mission: destroying the airfield runways. Beyond all that, what was the Coalition supposed to do when EVERY OTHER AIRFORCE REFUSED to carry out the missions?! War entails losses.

We build aircraft for duty, not display & the Tornado performed its duty very admirably. So much so that by the end of its service to the RAF, the airframes had accumulated way more hours than any other nation that operates it & as such, they were well worn out. As good as the Tornado is/was the Typhoon can simply do the job so much more effectively & efficiently.

Sorry, but I cannot admire this aircraft, except in one aspect: it could carry an enormously huge cluster ammunition container on its flat belly. Beside that, there was much better interceptor (F-14 Tomcat, MiG-31 Foxhound), much better dogfighter (actually every contemperary fighter), better interdictor (F-111) better electronic warfare aircraft (EA-6B, EF-111), better bomber (any contemperary bomber actually). So why those handful of countries put so much effort to make a mediocre aircraft instead of buying already existing ones? Even the Swedish - small nation with big capabilities - made better aircraft. Tornado was too complex, too expensive to be just a mediocre aircraft. With so much effort it should be the No.1. best aircraft in every aspect. But it was not. Nothing more, but a waste of money and resources.
